After starring role against Germany, ready to shine in the Kuip: 'Leo Sauer has all the conditions to make it to the top'
Leo Sauer must have 'more impact' on Feyenoord's game, according to coach Robin van Persie.
The Slovakian will want to repeat the top performance he delivered last week against Germany in the Kuip against Heerenveen. "If the space is there, he can finish you off."

wonder how many matches that red card will be. Hopefully only one match:

Seems Timber isnot going to extend his contract. His brother Jurrien spoiled the secret in an interview in England.
Given Feyenoord is loaded with midfielders and given how Valente played against SC Heerenveen, my pov is to bench him for the rest of the season, even ban him to the youth trainingsground, so he will miss the World cup.
We no money, you no worldcup.
We have to start playing things the hard way.

Timber can easily be replaced by Hwang In-beom.

Are any of the players in the above lineup, Feyenoord academy products?

  11. Timber (2008-20014) and Sauer (came as a 16 yo). Several academy products who were first team players, left this summer, as I already posted on the same question a few weeks ago.
Van Persie lets academy talents gain experience by subbing them in, like Slorie.

Aymen Sliti and Jan Plug are now officially part of Feyenoord's A-selection. The Rotterdam club announced this on Monday afternoon.
Both talents were in the match selection against SC Heerenveen last Saturday. Sliti made his appearance after just over an hour of play as a substitute for Sem Steijn. Plug remained on the bench.
The nineteen-year-old Sliti is a striker and came over from the youth academy of FC Twente in 2020.
Defender Plug (20) is Dirk Kuijt's nephew and made the switch from the Quick Boys youth in 2016. He made his debut in the Eredivisie last season against RKC Waalwijk (2-0 win).

And Feyenoord go top of the table with a 2-0 home win over Fortuna Sittard. It was the replacement match from Week 3. I am not sure I can remember a season when Feyenoord weren't several points behind PSV and Ajax after 5 weeks.

Van Persie impressed by Feyenoord's physical level: 'Premier League level' Today at 15:23 3Comments The work that the Feyenoord players do on the (training) field appeals to coach Robin van Persie. The coach said this at the press conference towards the league match against AZ.
Nowadays, a player can no longer sprint without this being recorded and so van Persie has gained many insights since the beginning of the season. 'If you see the physical data, it gives a horse the hiccups,' he said in Rotterdam-Zuid. 'How much we sprint, how much work we put in a duel. Both forward and backward. That is very positive. Regardless of the type of opponent, that's the norm.'
The staff of Feyenoord not only compares the data with the figures of competition peers, they also look at the Premier League. 'Some players have reached the level of Premier League matches in the last match (against Fortuna Sittard, ed.), based on physical data,' beamed Van Persie. 'When you see that the players are there, and when you see what they deliver, it gives me the good feeling and the right signal. Despite the average age, this is a mature group, with players who know what they want. They have to deliver every day, because everyone is good in this selection. The sparks fly. Everyone works hard and fights for their chance.'
Those who cannot yet give everything are, for example, Inbeom Hwang, Jakub Moder and Jordan Lotomba. Van Persie mentioned this trio as players who cannot be there against AZ. Of course, the longer injured Thomas Beelen will not play during matchday 5 of the Eredivisie, Gernot Trauner was not mentioned by Van Persie.

Versatile midfield makes Van Persie satisfied: "That's a luxury as a coach"
    Sep. 19. 2025 15:29
Robin van Persie is struggling with a luxury problem in midfield at Feyenoord. With Sem Steijn, Quinten Timber, Luciano Valente and Oussama Targhalline at his disposal, the coach has several options. In-beom Hwang and Jakub Moder will soon be added. During the press conference, Van Persie discusses the qualitative depth in his middle line.
In Feyenoord's midfield, the place of attacking midfielder this season is invariably for Sem Steijn. Van Persie is asked if he also sees Luciano Valente as an option for that position. "Valente can also play there, for sure. That is really his strength: that he can play on '6', '8' or '10'. But we are satisfied with Sem. I think he's doing a really good job, so from that point of view we have an extra option there with Valente and later also with Moder. We don't have a lot of options yet, only if everyone is fit."
Van Persie has enough flavours in midfield and could rotate to his heart's content. "I think we have stability in that. Only we do have the luxury that Valente can play in several positions. I see Quinten Timber as a left half, so as an '8', and Sem Steijn as a '10'. Oussama Targhalline can play on both '6' and '8'. We have some tolerance in that. Moder will join later and Hwang will join, who can play on '6' and '8'. Moder can actually play anywhere in midfield. That's a luxury as a coach."
However, the Feyenoord coach realizes that constant changes in the line-up are not necessarily conducive. "Of course, you don't want to see Valente in a different place every game, for example, because you also want consistency. On the other hand, that is also how it goes. Last game the plan was to bring Valente as '6' or '8', and he filled in at '10'. That's how things go. We always have a plan in advance and that plan comes true quite often. Only sometimes you also have to take into account that things can go a little differently and you react to that. So it's very nice to have the certainty that Valente will also fill that in properly."

  18. Jan Boskamp on Feyenoord academy talent Gjivai Zechiël:

Jan Boskamp does not understand the temporary loan out of Gjivai Zekiel. The young midfielder is loaned out to FC Utrecht this season, but according to the former Feyenoord player, he would not have been out of place in De Kuip. "I hope he doesn't run away." For Boskamp, it is no excuse that Feyenoord already has many experienced midfielders and Zechiel also plays European football at FC Utrecht. "Can you explain to me why that is not possible with us? I think it's a real disaster. I hope he doesn't run away," he says in his podcast.

I can understand what Jan tells, but come on, Jan...we have a midfield bunch of 6 top players, of which both PSV and Ajax would kill for any of them at the moment...and you think it's a good idea to turn those 6 into the magnificent 7?

    And it was, 2-2.

But then AZ 3-3 Feyenoord keeps the gap the same.

24' 1-0 AZ! Goal by Ro-Zangelo Daal! So, what a goal! AZ left winger Ro-Zangelo Daal gets too much space from Givairo Read and curls the ball into the far corner. A wonderful moment and a brilliant way for the 21-year-old striker from Amsterdam to score his first goal in the Eredivisie. The loss of possession was by Quinten Timber, but it was not done well by Read after that, who gave his direct opponent far too much time and space to set up for the shot.

36' 1-1 Feyenoord! Goal by Sem Steijn! There is Feyenoord's equalizer. In the 36th minute, Sem Steijn coolly hits the target from the penalty spot. A little hop, AZ's keeper is already heading towards his right corner and then it is a piece of cake for Steijn to score his third goal in six league matches for the Rotterdammers.

56' 2-2 Feyenoord! Goal by Jordan Bos! Five minutes after the 2-1, Jordan Bos made up for his mediocre defensive work. Feyenoord's Australian left back received the ball from Luciano Valente and shot from about twenty yards out, although his shot was deflected along the way.

78' 2-3 Feyenoord! Goal by Anis Hadj Moussa! So, what a wonderful goal! It is against the odds, but Feyenoord makes it 2-3 in Alkmaar in the 78th minute. It is Anis Hadj Moussa who hits the ball with his left foot, but the compliments can certainly go to Luciano Valente and Sem Steijn for the preparatory work. On the edge of the sixteenth, Valente played the ball with his left foot to Steijn, but he had already realized that he had no room to take a shot and therefore cut the ball directly to Hadj Moussa. He did have that space and shot beautifully into the near corner with his left. A world goal! But is it also the winning one?

Things got crazy after 90th minute

90' Yellow card for Timon Wellenreuther

90' Red card (second yellow card) for Anel Ahmedhodzic Anel Ahmedhodzic pretends to be crazy, but really has to leave the field after his second yellow card. Danny Makkelie has to make that clear to him, after which AZ players give him a push towards the side.

90' Three minutes of extra time Feyenoord had to hold on for three more minutes to defend this lead.

90'+3' Sem Steijn is replaced by Gijs Smal

90+2' Extra time to four minutes It was three minutes, but the extra time has been increased to four minutes. Feyenoord managed to take the pace out of the game completely.

90'+3' Quinten Timber is replaced by Jan Plug

90'+4' Yellow card for Bart Nieuwkoop

90+6' Penalty for AZ! AZ gets another penalty in the 96th minute! Jaden Slory enters the duel too wildly and hits Weslley Patati. Danny Makkelie puts the ball on the spot.

???6th xtra time minute??? Where did that come from?

90+7' Mexx Meerdink is going to take a penalty What a tension in Alkmaar. What will it be, 2-3 or still 3-3?

90'+8' 3-3 GOAL (Penalty) by Mexx Meerdink!

90+8' Mexx Meerdink scores! 3-3! In the 98th minute, it is still 3-3! Mexx Meerdink did not play a great game, but shot his penalty kick very convincingly.

    90'+9' End of second half

AZ equalize deep in injury time against Feyenoord; Rotterdammers still top

Feyenoord remains top of the Eredivisie despite dropping its first points of the season on Sunday. Robin van Persie’s side drew 3-3 with AZ in Alkmaar and now has 16 points from six matches.

The Rotterdam club failed to take advantage of the draw between PSV and Ajax (2-2). Feyenoord still leads PSV by 3 points, while Ajax sits third, 4 points behind the leaders. AZ is fifth with 11 points but has played one match fewer than the top four.

Van Persie started Aymen Sliti against AZ and was also able to call on Anis Hadj Moussa, who returned from suspension. AZ once again lined up with Mexx Meerdink in attack, as Troy Parrott was still not fit enough to play.

AZ had the upper hand early on and took the lead in the 24th minute through Ro-Zangelo Daal, who found the net with a curling strike past goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther. Feyenoord equalized in the 35th minute after Wouter Goes handled in the box, with Sem Steijn converting from the spot for his third goal of the season.

Six minutes after the break, Denso Kasius restored AZ’s lead. Feyenoord then took control, turning the match around with goals from Jordan Bos and Hadj Moussa. In stoppage time, Feyenoord defender Anel Ahmedhodzic received a second yellow card and was sent off. AZ snatched a late equalizer when Meerdink scored from the penalty spot after Jaden Slory committed a foul.

Van Persie had no criticism for his team despite the draw. “We played well today. Two of the three goals we scored were fantastic. We created plenty of chances,” Van Persie told ESPN after the game.

Still, Van Persie admitted he left with some disappointment. “It’s tough to concede so late,” he said. “On to the next match.”

Meerdink also spoke to ESPN after scoring the injury time penalty. Although he had struggled to make an impact during the match, he still chose to step up. “I know I can do it,” Meerdink told ESPN. “I bounced the ball a few times to find my focus. It worked. Fortunately, because scoring is the most important thing.”

Quinten Timber has said that he and his entourage are in talks with Feyenoord again about a possible contract extension. The Dutch international thus confirms the stories of general and technical director Dennis te Kloese.

Van Hanegem thinks the draw was the fault of Feyenoord, not that of Slory:
According to him, the cause was broader. "Feyenoord ran backwards en masse in the final phase. Even when Ahmedhodžić was still on the field. Yes, he rightly received his second yellow card, but even before that, Feyenoord allowed AZ to play all or nothing. While I didn't think AZ's three most important players played well at all."

Ahem, AZ is a strong team and they pushed us back. It wasnot by choice we did it.
