Still a big deal. Always good to have name recognition. But not official yet...
    According to Google Translate:
"Head coach of the Impact Jesse Marsch had met the media after practice Tuesday morning to provide details on the status of negotiations with Nesta. Marsch had declared "that Alessandro Nesta wants to be here."

The club had the same time confirmed that an offer had been made for its services. "

Sorry, should of done the translation for those who don't read french. The google translation was pretty correct.

If reports that Toronto were the one who invited him to the montreal-toronto game last week are true, I find TFC really stupid. He spent the game with Ferrari, Corradi and Di Vaio brother in law and rumors are that those guys and Di Vaio spent the night together around town in Montreal.

He was supposed to be there to consider playing with toronto but had all the impact italians there to convince him to join them in Montreal....

Oh, and rumors out of Montreal right now are that he won't be a DP and that this is a 1 1/2 year contract

Not a DP? How'd Montreal pull that rabbit out of a hat, or more precisely, just how much allocation $$$ were they sitting on?

NYRB got some allocation money from Montreal for trading the discovery rights of Nesta to Montreal.

Some serious ethnic pandering in Montréal.

I bet this year he's not a DP, but next year he will be a DP. This year (1/2 a year) with allotment money they could buy down his salary hit, but next year they won't be able to do that.

Allocation or Saputo money. Wouldn't suprise this guy becomes to poster boy of Saputo products and is shovelled a couple mill or more to endorse it. They are the cheese mafia after all.

Saputo said that the Impact started with $1.1 million dollars in allocation money.

Montreal has been like that since they started in 1993. They've always picked Italian-Canadians for players and front office jobs. I didn't think it would change now.

    ^^^ This.

The Impact had a pink third jersey (*not* breast-cancer related, as a few other clubs (e.g. TFC) have done) a few years back as a tribute to Palermo (which a news article at the time said was the preferred club and hometown of the Saputo family). So, yeah, the Saputos are a dyed-in-the-wool Italian family and their team is reflecting that.

Show's the maturity of the league. 5 years ago, this place would be going crazy. Now we just shrug our shoulders at yet another aging european CB. To be fair, Maldini played until he was what...39? So Nesta could still have a lil left in the tank. Who knows, we shall see.

Yes he's old but he's still better than any defender Montreal have....
It's not like they are going to pay him China-like money.

I can understand mls fans would prefer younger star but the league isn't there yet. Even if players like Nesta are old, they still improve the quality of play of the league if they are commited and they are great players for younger guys to learn from (see 19 years old Ouimette the impact signed from their academy this season).

Just for fun, this was just a year ago....

He was able to guard Messi pretty good, I'm pretty sure he won't look like a fool playing in the mls....

Yeah. One of my favorite players, Javier Zanetti, plays just as good now at 38, almost 39, as he did 10 years ago. He seems to have the desire to remain in top form, though, which might not be the case for Nesta. We'll see.
