Nellile Snubbed Finalists for Defender of the Year were just announced: Bocanegra Barrett Lalas. DC Nominations: Olsen for Comeback Pope for Humanitarian and, of course, Nicky for Keeper. Full list can be found here: http://www.mlsnet.com/content/02/weekly1008.html
Promote a former American star and 2 up and coming ones, or an up and coming New Zealander that might leave the league soon....
Frankly, Nelsen didn't play early in the season and was injured at the end. If you're going on his defensive organization and goal scoring then you really should be voting for Alexi Lalas anyway. Nelsen had a breakthrough year, and I think we're all proud of him and happy for him. But, in the final analysis I cannot really say that he had a better year than Reyes or Prideaux. Reyes probably had a more profound effect on our game for the entire season, and Prideaux answered the bell all year, and was really the only defender that did. If Nelsen stays in MLS he'll get his shot at this award, but this season I don't disagree with him not being one of the top 3. He's just one of several defenders that you could arguably put up there in this down year for stellar defenders, but I wouldn't call his omission a travesty. -Tron
Re: Nellile Snubbed Worst forward of the year: the entire DC front line. Goalie most likely to get injured from receiving so many shots on goal: Rimando. Highest salary to overall productivity ratio: El Diablo. Team with the most problems with referees (and poor fouling choices): DC. Sorry people, just venting. I am disgusted with the teams still alive in the playoffs. Unfortunately this must finally be the year for LA.
Re: Re: Nellile Snubbed You're forgetting Mike Ammann. The finalists for the awards seem pretty good to me. I think Twellman won't win most valuable because he was on the same team as Ralston who was also very valuable. Ruiz (damn, dirty) probably gets it because he was the only guy scoring for LA. I'm glad Rimando got the nomination. Why the hell is the ceremony in Providence, Rhode Island? What's up with that?
Re: Re: Re: Nellile Snubbed Providence is the host city for MLS Cup 2002. In reality, it's closer to Foxboro than Boston is, and is a surprisingly fun city.
Actually, I think that Nelsen deserves a nomination for Defender of the Year more than Lalas. Why? Because unlike Lalas, Nelsen was on a bad team. Sure anyone can be successful on a team that plays well and wins stuff. But to marshal one of the best defenses in the league on a team that finishes in last place - that is much tougher work! Not that it matters because the awards will go to: Rimando, despite playing out of his head on a bad team, will get snubbed. Olsen, didn't do enough in terms of goals or assists upon returning to actually win anything. Pope, may win and may not, depends on how much weight Jolley's "World Trade Center" charity carries.
Exactly. Agreed. What should be noted is that Jolley might have raised $10,000 in one year, but the Capitol Soccer Ball raised that much for the EPF in one night! Dave
So far, two for two on my predictions... Chung wins for "fair play" and Jolley for "humanitarian of the year". Where is the appreciation for Eddie Pope considering both the amount of money raised each year and the length of time the Eddie Pope foundation has been running?
Klein comes back from an ACL tear, big deal. Even Mathis with his crappy work ethic (according to Arena and Zambrano) has come back from two. Olsen comes back from 4 ankle surgeries in less than 2 years to play his ass off and spur his team so much that it actually came down to the last game in OT before we were eliminated from playoff contention. Whatever, who needs awards we have the Atlantic Cup.
Thamlin19, are you really Alexi "the Red Haired Wanker" Lalas in disguise or just one of his relatives or really dig his music? Because otherwise, I'm not sure why you would resent my remark about the above Galaxitive? While you may be red haired and defender of the year, you were not in the running for the MLS ADT Defender of the Year... Sorry man, I hate to break that to you...
Not yet, give me a couple years man. I don't see any 17 year olds up for these awards anyway, I think they have a bias against the Car#@!%!@ and Q1 as it is. No point in me working my ass off in the league now if I can't get an award right? Redheads gotta stick together my man, just heard the "Red Haired (insert deragatory remark)" one too many times I guess.
Nicols gets Coach of the Year. Darn I figured that Sigi the Hut would have put "the fear of becoming dinner" into the voters and would have been a shoe-in... Plus we all know that MLS loves LA
I can't believe that I just read a post with a spelling error in it from a moderator of the stature of Revelation. Bocanegra? Rev Note: What spelling error? It's good to be moderator...
