Nilton Santos: http://www.fifa.com/classicfootball/players/player=44604/index.html great read and even better pics.
When I watch EPL broadcasts, I get the impression that some of the announcers or commentators have yet to understand that outside backs aren't supposed to be center backs who just happen to play closer to the sideline.
I remember the Hotshots playing at the Summit, but we also lived in Denver in the early 80s, where I recall watching the Denver Avalanche in the old MISL. Their games were also on local TV. Those indoor leagues kept things going for a while in a lot of places.
Soccer Made in Germany with Toby Charles. A one hour highlight show that aired on PBS in the late 70s-early 80s. I don't remember if it was on Saturday or Sunday mornings, but I remember oversleeping and missing it often. That was before DVRs kids. Hell, that was before VCRs.
Depends where you lived - I recall it was on late on Saturday afternoon. One memorable episode they had to release tear gas into the stands which was a little different than the typical NASL game. I sort of miss indoor soccer, and odd rules like the blue card. It would be perfect for a November-February season, but MLS goes so long now and starts so early you couldn't do it with outdoor players involved.
I remember that whenever we moved as I was growing up I would get a TV guide to find out if/when the local PBS station showed Soccer Made in Germany. That show and the weekly game on SIN (the Spanish International Network, predecessor of Univision) were the most consistent way we could watch soccer. There were NASL games on TV, but it was very hard to convince my dad, who grew up watching soccer in another country, that games played on that old, flat AstroTurf, or on fields with dirt baseball infields (and sometimes AstroTurf around dirt infields) was actually soccer. There's a lot of nostalgia about the NASL these days, mostly understandable, but it was often a tough sell to some people because of how the game looked and played on those surfaces.
ha. no, 1995 was a bad year for Mexico. started out promising then went into the crapper. does anyone remember when it was still called the King Fahd Cup?
Old school................y'all are a bunch of johnny come lately's. This is Old School - I had a pair
> bunch of johnny come lately's > johnny come lately's > lately's I'm going to assume that word or phrase aren't made up, because you're British but I'm starting to think Brits mess up the English language just as much as us Americanites.
I was scrolling through Netflix today and I ran across this one: A documentary about England's 1990 World Cup run. I remember watching their game against West Germany on the 4th of July as a teenager. If I wasn't hooked on the sport before then, I was after watching that one.
