NCR: Train Trip to DC United Game from Triangle I was just noticing that Amtrak is having some incredible fare sales this summer and was curious if anyone was interested in a trip up to a DC United game from the Triangle area. I was thinking about either the Columbus game on 6/14 or the New England game on 6/21. We could leave the triangle area around 11am getting into DC about 5:30 for the 7:30 game. The return train leaves Sunday around 11am arriving around 4:30p. If 3 people travel together, the train fare is only $27.50 per person, roundtrip. Train tickets must be bought by April 30th to get the discount fare. Once I get a sense if anyone is interested, we can look into hotel group rates, etc. Jarrett
When you get your group together, lemme know and we can hook you up with the SE tailgate (send me an email at kim@screaming-eagles.com). I can also help with hotel info (like which areas to avoid!) K
Someone suggested we might do this for the Fire game on June 7th instead. Any of those three games would work for me. When responding, post your preference in order and also note if you can't attend or are not interested in a particular game. My preferences: 1. Columbus on June 14 2. New England on June 21 3. Fire on June 7 Jarrett
NCR: Train Trip to DC United Game from Triangle To help flesh out your group, I suggest that you contact the fans of Charleston Battery and any other nearby A-League team. This link can get you going: http://www.usldiscussions.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=28 GM
Charleston is not nearby, it takes longer to get to Charleston than it does from Raleigh to DC. F@#k South Carolina. Cary is not much better. Grow a set and don't act like it's a big deal to make that quick drive up 85N to support your area's MLS team.
Wrong. Charleston is almost exactly the same distance from Raleigh as DC. It takes 4 hours from Durham to DC and 4 1/2 from Durham to Charleston with the first 25 minutes of that getting to Raleigh.
Let's try to keep this topic focused on the trip... If anyone from the surrounding areas would like to join us, they are welcome to. As far as the aspects of a train trip, the areas that make the most sense would be Charlotte, Greensboro, and Richmond as they are on the same rail line. So far, I've managed to gather 4 "maybes" for a trip to the Fire game on June 7. Jarrett
Nit pick all you want(true the distances are not much different, you spend too much time on mapquest) but the stretch from DC to the triangle or the other way around has always taken me less time than the very boring trip down to Charleston. My point was not specifically distance oriented, it's just that Charlotte Eagles are much closer and are a NC A league team that has affiliations(close dealings), or has in the past any way, with United. They have too many man eating insects in SC anyway. I'd just like to see all of the countless United supporters in NC(theres a ton I know, who else would NC support unless you supported one of the lower league football clubs), making that four hour drive more often. But the biggest reason for my stupid post was that I had just gotten home and was plowed, and just being a prick! Sorry to get you guys off topic back to your planning, see you at RFK.
This trip now seems to be evolving into a road trip (rather than train due to Amtrak's noteable unreliability in the Southeast corridor) to the DC United vs. Chicago Fire game at RFK on June 7th. A Saturday night stay in DC and then travel down to Richmond for the US National Team vs. New Zealand (hopefully soon to be announced by US Soccer) on June 8th before returning to RDU on Sunday night. Let us know if anyone else is interested... Jarrett
We're at least 2 for the Fire and the Nats, assuming I'm not as pathetically broke as I was for the Fire-DCU match a few weeks ago. Assuming it comes off (assuming my lump sum from UNC is at the beginning of my work not at the end), our plan is to drive up Friday night and stay with college friends. Match Saturday, leave for Richmond early Sunday morning...tailgate, watch nats, drive home.
I'd recommend trying to put together a group for the May 17th WUSA/MLS doubleheader. Especially since the Carolina Courage will be playing. I'll be going, but by car. See y'all there. Another interesting trip will be the weekend of June 7th/8th. DC United will play at RFK on the 7th, then on the 8th you have the choice of catching the Freedom at RFK, or stopping in Richmond to catch the US Men play New Zealand.
That's also the weekend of the FA Cup final and Summers would be a good place to catch it. I'm actually going to be up that way, but I'll be at Pimlico for the Preakness... Jarrett
I travel from Durham to DC a fair bit for work, and of course, for matches. I found the "direct" train to be a hassle, taking a very long time (especially if there is track trouble) and also scheduled at pretty inconvenient times. But long ago I discovered a very nice compromise--I drive to the station in Richmond early in the AM and grab any of the frequent trains in to DC. I often get up for a meeting and back the same day.
Call me crazy... But I just booked a very cheap round trip to LA for June 7th on Delta. I get back in at 9:15am on Sunday. Which will give me just enough time to drive to Richmond for the USA/New Zealand game. The grand opening of the Home Depot Center in Carson was just too much to pass up.
I'm sure you've been called worse You're taking the red-eye home and then you have to drive to Richmond...you are nuts. See you there! Jarrett
