I was reading an article about the woman that got blasted by a chair at the Rangers/Oakland game. The article was talking about how major league stars are a menace to society and basically sports are just plain evil. I can't remember where the article was, or else I would link it.

Anyway, it got me thinking ---- if the lady that got blasted was taking part in the extreme heckling of the players, did the b!tch deserve it? Or, if she was an "innocent" bystander, should she have been more aware of her surroundings and either gotten away from the violent crowd or assume responsibility for her actions and those around her?

Maybe I am in the minority. However, I feel that if you, or the group you're with, rails on someone long enough and that someone snaps --- its your own fault. For example, when Mathis threw the jelly beans and if one of them put out my eye, I would view it as my fault. Simply because I baited him, was in a hostile situation, and was not acting in accords with "civilized" society.

I think there should have been better security at the stadium. If you and your friends are heckling players so much that they start throwing chairs at you, then there's obviously something major going on, and it should have been stopped before it got to that point. Something should have been said to the group ( ie, either tone it down or leave). Yes, they paid for their tickets, and good natured ribbing is fine. But when you start to disrupt other ticket holders' good time, then maybe it's time for you to go.

Throwing a chair at random into a crowd is not acting in accords with "civilized" society. Go back to kindergarten - remember sticks and stones? Just because someone flips you off on the freeway doesn't give you the right to cause a multiple car pileup and injure innocent people (or should they just get out of your way?) while you chase down the perpetrator at dangerous speeds.

That fight erupted pretty quickly. It's hard enough to get down a row full of people when you have to take a leak or get a beer, let alone when a fight erupts around you. And how would you feel if that chair hit an 8-year-old girl or an infant? It's bad enough that it hit a defenseless woman and broke her nose. When did heckling ever injure a player? Players should face prosecution when they endanger someone by throwing an object at them, just as fans should face prosecution for doing the same. Francisco threw the first punch, so to speak, in this instance, so I hope he gets prosecuted to the full extent of the law and pays susbstantially for his misdeed.

The best thing to do when someone heckles you is to ignore them. It's not like this is the first time a player has been heckled at a sporting event. Should a player be allowed to spray the stands with machine gun fire when the opposing team's fans heckle him?

Reacting to heckling only gives opposing fans the satisfaction of knowing that they got under your skin. The players should have acted more professionally. If those overpaid prima donnas can't handle heckling then maybe they should consider a career where they don't have to deal with the public (like a sewer cleaner or a sales clerk at Home Depot). Or maybe they can start a new career playing golf.

I'd like to see more chair smacks really. We used to have a GM that could arrange for that. Honestly who wouldn't buy Cunny a beer if he went into Section 8 and smacked all those stupid sons of bitches with a chair?

Buying a Ticket does not give you the right to act beyond common decency any more than paying taxes makes you a policeman's boss. If you need to stand behind the I paid $40 to personally abuse you excuse, you take sports too seriously or are a psycho.

Right on... and to add to that:

I bet you're the kind of guy the figures you can say whatever you want wherever you want, right? I mean, it's a free country. You've got the freedom of speach backing you, right?

Now, I'm going to just use the generic "you" from here on out and not aim it at this Chupacabra guy just to make my point. So take it easy when you read this and don't go claiming its a personal attack.

At what point do you draw the line? If this country is so free, why can't people talk about bombs on a plane or in an airport? You could be talking about a videogame, but that doesn't matter. Try talking about acts of violence while taking a tour of the White House. Think you'll get to finish your tour? Let's drop the level to personal... what if I stand out on the street in front of your house with a megaphone protesting against you 24 hours a day with a bunch of my buddys? We heckle you, tell you how ugly your kids are and what a whore your wife is... is that fine? I mean, as long as I've gone through the proper channels and registered a protest I should be fine right? Better yet, what about those parents that tell their kids they can tease, pick-on, bully, and intimidate other children as long as they don't take the first swing? You know, that kid and torment the life out of somebody, but as soon as the picked-on snaps and decks the bully, you're going to be off filing a lawsuit or begging to the child to be expelled from school.

Why is being a sports fan some kind of free ticket to mistreat people? People like you disgrace the rest of us Americans. It's people like you that make our nation hated by so many around the world.

OK, I know I got a little out of control, but this kind of mentality of you can say whatever because words don't hurt, only actions can hurt is such a load of crap. Thanks, been working way to many hours and just needed to vent.

I'm a little disappointed that Francisco hasn't been getting the kind of stick Denton did from you guys. After all, Denton only flipped the bird, and that's only in bad taste. Throwing a chair into the fans in inexcusable.

Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of blame to go around. The hecklers should realize that if it isn't something you are willing to say to a players face one-on-one in a dark alley, then they should shut the fsck up. Players need to realize that they don't have jobs if people don't come to the park.

In all honesty, I think Denton doing more than flipping the bird was warranted. I know that one of our historically biggest problems with a lot of our players has been their pride and commitment to the team. A major sign of pride is to become upset when heckled. The only problem with Denton is that he only became upset when we attacked him personally; which still leads me to believe he doesn't give a rat's @ss whether the team wins or loses.

As a fan, I become upset when I view the players as simply "doing their job." I like to think of them as athletes that are playing for their pride, the pride of the city, and the pride of their fans. The problem is that emotions sometimes make you do stupid things (such as beating up a mascot, throwing chairs, or even throw jelly beans into the crowd).

Ok I'll buy the you can't say whatever you want argument but a couple of items here:

    1. The players should just ignore if it possible.
    2. If it gets to personal, obnoxious or appears to be a threat the players should request security to remove the guy or at least move him/her to another seat far from the field.
    3. If a fan throws an object the players should move to a location out of reach of the fan and security should have the fan arrested for assault.

Personally I don't think throwing a chair into the crowd is ever and option.

Now if a fan enters the playing field I say beat the crap out of them as now they are a physical threat and it reduces the likely hood of fans running on the field.

Throwing a chair into the stands because you're getting heckled has got to be the biggest ********** move ever.

If you're that pissed off about it, either get security to toss the guy, or go into the stands and kick his ass.

say hello to the United States newest millionaire...

i can't believe that dumbass pitcher will have much a a carreer after this either. i can see him being booed at every stadium he visits, having a meltdown and being a complete headcase until the dayton dragons come calling. at which point his body will be found at the dayton motor motel on the dixie strip surrounded by a tony montana sized pile of cocaine, a handle of bacardi dark, a bottle of viagra and eric denton.

Or should he be allowed to extend the middle finger if it's his own supporters that heckle him?

The Crew Forum has slowly become the land of the insane.

That you can equate taunting a professional athlete with throwing a chair into a crowd of people is beyond belief.

Exactly. Unless the player is deaf he has no choice but to hear the taunts. But, the fan does have a chance to move out of the way of the flying chair.

Clearly the fan is more at fault.

I'm glad someone here gets it. It's like that lady's going to heal eventually you know? But the poor relief pitcher, for him it's years and years of counseling.

Hey! Have you ever been taunted by a chubby-chaser? It's got to be humiliating.

At least that big tub of goo can buy herself a gym membership and peal a couple of bills on the stairmaster.
