Just went to the movie's web page, which was posted in another forum. The movie opens in the Triangle on April 4 at the following theaters: Raleigh - Rialto Durham - Carolina Theater Cary - Madstone Chapel Hill - Varsity Of course, this doesn't have to be NCR if the team has a promotional event with the movie like some of the other teams are doing! (Credit to Nordby1 for giving me that idea in a different thread)
I'm hoping to get a group of US fans to catch it on opening night (3/28) in Seattle - the night before US/Japan. Otherwise, I'll probably catch it on the 4th at the Carolina in Durham. Here's the website with trailer and extras http://www2.foxsearchlight.com/benditlikebeckham/
"Bend it Like Beckham" Not Necessarily NCR Here's what the Spirit are doing this Wednesday: Hopefully the Courage will decide to do something similar.
Well, since it's not debuting in the Triangle for another three weeks after it does in San Diego, hopefully the Courage will do something similar and will announce it as it gets closer to April 4. I'm hoping that, since the WUSA appears to be involved with the marketing of the film (a link to WUSA.com appears on the film's web page) that all the clubs will do something with the debut. Am I correct in assuming, Nordby1, that you'll be attending the March 12 showing? Let us know how it goes if you do, please.
"Bend It Like Beckham" I just talked to Tsunami and found out that he got passes for us so yes, I am definitely planning to go Wednesday evening and I will be sure to let you know how it went.
FWIW I do believe the Freedom were the first club to tie themselves to the film. About a month ago they held a screening then it was followed by a Washington Post chat with both the producer/director/whatever and Carrie Moore. And I do believe they have held several Wednesday screenings the past couple of weeks. And members of the USWNT saw this movie during the Gold Cup I believe.
"Bend it like Beckham" Review Here's the link to a nice review of the movie done by the CyberSoccerNews: "Bend it like Beckham"
Kara Lang's Review I just read another review of the movie that I saw posted over on the wusa.com boards and this one was written by Breanna Boyd's teammate on the Canadian National Team, Kara Lang: This flick's a real kick
NYT review Here is the review from the New York Times. You have to register to be able to read it, but it is free. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/12/movies/12BEND.html
Spirit Screening of "Bend It Like Beckham" The Spirit staff did an awesome job organizing yesterday's screening of the movie. It was a great idea to have an exhibition match followed by a nice opportunity to meet and greet the players and then the movie. I was really impressed by the fact that as far as I could tell every single player on the Spirit preseason roster who was not in Portugal or Brazil was there for the screening including three UNC girls, Susan Bush, Jen Branam, and Shelley Finger. Too bad the Courage aren't going to be able to schedule a similar event linked with an exhibition match at SAS Stadium. If anyone is interested I will post more details about how yesterday's Spirit event went.
Yeah, sure, what the heck...just don't give away too much of the movie for those of us in backwaters that won't get to see it until April!
Hege & Unni I am a Spirit fan, but mainly because Hege Riise and Unni Lehn are my two favorite players in the WUSA, I am a much bigger fan of the Courage.
Re: Hege & Unni So what happens to your "support of the Courage" when Hege and Unni are no longer part of the team?
The Courage Wall Had a Hole!! I really loved most of the movie and thought it was especially cool to hear the way the players in the Spirit section of the theater reacted to some parts of the movie. Just to show what a true fan of the Courage I am , the absolute lowlight of the movie for me was when they showed a clip of Mia scoring that winning goal off a free kick against Bente during that early season TNT game of the week that was probably the negative turning point of the 2001 season for Carolina.
Why don't you just accept the fact that right now I support your team a lot more than most soccer fans in the Triangle Area do and leave it that. Most of the true Carolina fans who post here know what I have done to support the Courage and the WUSA in general.
I definitely appreciate your support. I'm just wondering how deep it is. We'll take what support we can get, but I'm more interested in folks who identify with the laundry - regardless of the players wearing it. I apologize for getting this thread off-topic. I do appreciate your support nordby1.
Over on the WUSA boards it was posted by oddball34 that the "Courage are doing an appearance on April 11th at a theatre in Cary." This sounds like a lot of fun.
