Like I said a few weeks ago, painfully, the Buckeyes are very good.

They may not become national champs, but I would not bet against them. Well coached, athletic, skilled and deep off the bench.

I’m very optimistic for my Wolverines next year, but the Buckeyes are dangerous this year.

What a shame that none of the supposed new ACC “Super-league” teams made it to the college cup. I’m sure the whole country is devastated. ;)

(a select few schools are trying to break away and start their own league if you had not heard)

Well if the NCAA allowed "9-Month" play the bigger conferences wouldn't have to even think about it.

Since Ohio State has a medical school, does that mean that "will do all it can" includes free medical care?

NCAA didn’t stop anything from that happening.

????. The NCAA wouldn't allow year-round play! Didn't even vote on it.

It didn’t get to the NCAA to vote on. It was shot down before it even got there. Was tabled like three times before the one vote rejected it.

Zero presidents. Zero ADs. Zero coaches. Zero NCAA votes.

I get it. Push back on all fronts. Semantics. Don't you believe someone higher up said to pull it before it gets defeated ? I think the purpose of the breakaway group is to be able to play year-round which doesn't seem likely with the current culture within the NCAA or whomever is putting the axe to it.

Vermont have never won the cup, and they are unseeded. Cinderella hails from Burlington.

Marshall have provided a template for how non-Power5 schools should manage their program. I want Akron to be more like Marshall.

This matchup will come down to one restart that will decide it.

I think there’s been little-to-no thought by any Presidents or ADs on the former “21st Century Model.” It was driven by a couple of coaches, and that’s about it. It was dead in the waters before it even got to voting time.

The group that rejected it initially are about as far removed from athletics AND soccer, it was a failed proposal. They failed to mention the one thing that truly is going to make decisions on these matters: financials.

I think this exchange captures the flavor of conversations between college soccer coaches and their athletic directors.

I don't think a few coaches - even important ones - were ever going to move the needle on this (proposal for two-semester play), without much broader support, which never materialized.

I honestly just think Chris Grassie is just that damn good. Early on in his Marshall tenure Louisville tried to hire him away. At the time Grassie was making 122K and Marshall had started to fund the program for hopeful success. Louisville offered him less than 100K and their soccer budget was/is 9th in the ACC. Grassie has also turned down 2 USL One jobs.

He has played or coached in WV since he was 17 except for a 4 year stint as an assistant at Michigan from 2007-2010. He was on the staff at Michigan when Akron won the national title and beat Michigan in the College Cup simis.

After tonight he will have been to 6 college cups and 4 finals as a coach. He made it to the DII national championship game twice at the University of Charleston as head coach, and the college cup simis once, one college cup simi as an assistant at Michigan and two national championship games with Marshall.

I think his biggest strength is identifying the right players for his system and then his player development. Plus Grassie plays more of a pro style possession attacking based game. Only twice this year has Marshall not had the majority of the possession. The Sun Belt Championship game against WVU and the last game against Ohio State.
