It is January and months away from March Madness. There are noteworthy games that are going on. I got to admit myself that I follow NBA more than I do college hoops. I always try to catch an ACC or PAC 10 games here and there. Some news as of 1/13/11 Florida State beat number 1 ranked Duke. I love it when there is an upset and the students rush the court. I personally do not live in San Diego, but I always have a soft spot for any Cal States and UC’s that are not Berkley or LA to do well and progress in the tourney. San Diego State is ranked number 6 in both polls.
Oregon's new court is terrible for TV viewing. Who could have seen this coming? http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basket...tracts-from-first-game-at-Or?urn=ncaab-307433
Omg that is awful! It hurt my eyes just looking at the picture. I could not imagine watching the game.
Sullinger had a great game. Ohio State were leading by 10 late in the second half, and Northwester tied it with a minute left. Unfortunately, OSU barely won. 58-57
Was hoping that this might be the year that Northwestern makes its first ever NCAA tournament, but it looks unlikely at this point. And that Sullinger kid is a beast.
Yeah man, it took me a second to think about it, but yeah I have never seen NW in the tourney. I never had to put them a bracket. Sullinger was doubled teamed all game and still managed to dominate.
Turner Networks To Air 41 March Madness Tournament Games http://www.multichannel.com/article..._To_Air_41_March_Madness_Tournament_Games.php So there you go. The start of another migration of sports to cable.
Dear Texa$$, [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3_ICXgsv0k"]YouTube - Nebraska vs. Texas 2/19/11: Storming the Court[/ame] Get the **** out. Don't ever come back.
Hopefully this CBB thread picks up more than ones in the past. The Big Ten is looking odd right now. Ohio State is the best with Purdue nipping at their heels and Wisconsin not too far behind either. Michigan State and Illinois are on shaky ground, though MSU might be bringing it around. Hopefully they start doing that after they play my Boilermakers on Sunday. All-Americans so far, IMO: Nolan Smith Jimmer Fredette Kemba Walker JaJuan Johnson Jared Sullinger
I just finished watching Pitt (4) vs Villanova(19). It was close in the half and at one point Villa were up 26-25. But the second half was all Pitt. Tonight is Duke vs NC. I saw the first match, and Duke just took it in the last 5 minutes. Right now, they have similar conference record.
Duke has scored only a hand full of points in the second. They could not make free throws and could get key defensive rebounds, of which UNC milked the clock. Tar Heels are ACC champions- regular conference title.
Okay, please go easy on me, I'm from Australia and what I know about basketball could be written on the back of a postage stamp with a large texta(wide sharpie) but I don't mind watching it, Marquette vs Louisville is on right now and I have a question. I hate it on the nightly news when idiot sports reporters here mangle the names of famous Soccer clubs from overseas because they're too lazy to bother doing their research and they plain just don't care because its not their usual Aussie Rules or Rugby. witness Real Madrid, pronounced like there exists a possibility of a fake Madrid and Juventus, a club exclusively for Jewish people So with that in mind, what is the correct pronunciation of Louisville? In my mind it would be Loo-ee-ville, but the commentators are pronouncing it more like Lurr-val..being Americans I'd assume they know what they're on about. I've already made the mistake of mispronouncing Raleigh to a N. Carolinan..who knew it was Raw-lee? please advise. Its only good manners to get it right I suppose, it grates us when we hear our cities mis-pronounced by tourists, but being as they're tourists, I've never heard of anyone getting all grammar Nazi and correcting them. Sorry, I dont know enough about college basketball to actually contribute to this thread in a meaning ful way..I will be reading though cheers!
No need for apologies. I've heard it pronounced several ways, but the most common seems to be Loo-ə-vul, with the stress on the first syllable. Here's the pronunciation from Wikipedia... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7d/Loouhvull.ogg It's generally on target, except I wouldn't stress the middle syllable (uh) as much as they do. Someone from Kentucky might be able to offer more insight how actual residents pronounce it though.
@Capt. Socceroo - I thought you might find this billboard interesting as well... This pretty much jibes with what I was saying.
Ha! that's cool, if you can't laugh at yourself, you shouldn't be laughing I reckon, good bit of self depreciation. I think the 1st part is a 2 syllable word, but its just that local say it so fast it comes out as almost one syllable! Louis becomes Lwa and ville becomes vull..got it I think. I'm not planning a trip to KY anytime soon so I should be safe from embarrassment for the time being Thanks for your tips and replies GiuseppeSig, much obliged In my mind I'll go with Looavull, but hey everything sounds a bit strange when you say it with an Aussie accent eh? Try Nhulunbuy, its a small bauxite mining community up North in the Northern Territory my cabin mate at recruit school in the Navy was from there, He got lots of LOLs out of my attempts to learn it
Not from Kentucky, but I've always heard and said, "Loo-ee-ville" Saying it fast enough will take care of the long E to some extent.
I was listening to a Canadian sports radio station a few years ago, and a guy with a British accent was reading college football scores. He said that Tennessee or someone was beating "au-BURN." But then, that's still a lot better than the way they botch the names of European hockey players like Zdeno Chara.
You're welcome. One could easily spend days trying to figure out how to pronounce US place names that originate from elsewhere, but are pronounced completed differently. Like Cairo, Illinois - pronounced Kay-roh. Milan, Indiana - pronounced My-lin. Calais, Maine - pronounced just like the word callous. Not too mention streets like Goethe here in Chicago, pronounced Goath-ee or Throop in Brooklyn, pronounced Troop and of course Houston street in Manhattan pronounced House-ton, unlike the city in Texas.
This just reminded me of an ex-girlfriend of mine, she was from OKC, OK and was a typical Bible-belter(got homesick when she went away to College for 2yrs in Texas, so I jokingly told her we could take a European Holiday without leaving CONUS, we'd start in Paris TX, and choose from anyone of a dozen Berlins on the eastern states, Cairo, IL was on the list as was Milan, IN...ahh I wonder if that girl will ever leave her State to see the world? I wouldn't put my house on it. When we were together I flew to OKC, but I just couldn't get her on a plane to come down to Australia - had to explain what a passport was - in hindsight, not a good match Lovely girl though
She's not alone. Only about a third of Oklahomans have a passport... http://blog.cgpgrey.com/how-many-americans-have-a-passport-the-percentages-state-by-state/
Surely there's a difference between taking the step to get a passport and not even knowing what one is though? We find that sort of map hard to fathom here in Australia, being an island nation, we need a passport to go pretty much anywhere. I don't know a person who doesn't have a passport. and when I left the Navy to go back to Adelaide(My home city) almost everyone had up sticks and left either overseas or interstate, made it a priority to find new friends, thankfully, following Adelaide United helped in that oh, and my winning personality
