It looks insanely good, but JJ Abrams makes incredibly stupid TV and films. So while the trailer has me excited, my expectations are still very low.
Thank goodness I watched this tonight while there is still nothing on television. I am thankful not to invest another hour on this. It was extremely predictable and reminded me of Jericho on the move. Enough said.
From the previews it looked like something that would quickly devolve into standard melodrama once the cool apocalyptic stuff is over. It kinda reminded me of the S.M. Sterling series that starts with "So Dies the Fire" so I was already put off.
You seem to harp on this a lot. Maybe I should of said that this one isn't a melodrama that stands out.
I'm sorry - this wasn't a comment about the show, which I'm excited about. Yeah, it'll most likely suck but maybe not. I was having trouble posting from my phone so I ended up deleting the content of my first post, which was something about JJ Abrams and Fringe, which is my current favorite show.
Wow, it's almost a copy of SM Stirling's "Dies the Fire" book series. Some questionable things looking at the trailer: 1- Why does everyone look so clean...? 2- Everything looks brand new, clothes, composite bows(which will not last 15 years) etc. 3- Muskets? When North America is literally swimming in millions upon millions of rounds of ammo and guns to go with it. SCAVANGE. It's not the Dies the Fire series, because the necessary chemical reactions obviously still work(steam power will be in the show, muskets work etc)..so guns would still have the chemical processes needed to work. 4- When the 747 is falling from the sky because technology stopped working, why are the cabin lights still on? And why is it spiraling from the sky when it has a glide ratio of like 15:1? I guess t 5-. A lot of people look extremely healthy, given the ordeals they must've gone through: they're muscular and strong not slim and wiry, not set on by illnesses, some even carry quite impressive "girths" around with them(guess some things don't change in the US of A). Ironically it'll probably be the extras who are clothed the most reasonably. Hopefully not everyone will still look like they just came from a beauty parlor instead of 15 years without technology when the show starts moving forward.......
I may have to watch just for Giancarlo Esposito. Hopefully he can bring a little of Gus Fring (Breaking Bad) to this thing.
Guys, we should remember this was just the Pilot. We all know how different shows become after the pilot episode. I remember hearing them talk about the show at Comic-Con saying they don't get their scripts until its necessary, like 2 or 3 days before shooting - and i think they said they've only shot 4 episodes so far. So who knows what JJ has up his sleeve for this one, i for one plan on giving this show a shot and not give up on it because of the pilot which in my opinion was not all that bad. Bunch of negative Nancy's you lot.
Abrams sort of strikes me as this guy who has all these awesome ideas and no real idea about how to implement them in an effective narrative. His series almost never live up to the brilliance of the initial concept. My favourite series of his is the somewhat unambitious Person Of Interest. I think the formulaic case-of-the-week setup gives the show some badly-needed structure. It prevents the plot just meandering all over the place with whatever crazy idea Abrams and his writers come up with next.
Especially the close-cropped hair. I know that hand-powered clippers used to exist, but they are hardly common and you can't make more without machining which needs electricity. It's some 2 engined aircraft, but I can't tell which. If it's a 737, it would have totally mechanical backups to some of the control surfaces. No matter what, an aircraft that loses power shouldn't get into a flat spin like the one in the trailer. But the bigger problem is that the power on an airplane (and most places) doesn't depend on computers. They are generated by fundamental forces of nature, not something that can be changed by a virus. Getting rid of all electricity is totally the realm of magical thinking. If it were to actually happen, then the universe as we know it wouldn't exist. All sorts of chemical and nuclear reactions couldn't work. People certainly wouldn't work. The more you think about it, the more absurd it becomes. I've watched a few JJ Abrams works, and the overriding feeling I get from him is that he know how to make films and nothing else. He is clueless about nature and culture and humanity or any facet of the world outside making movies.
But for these high concept shows, the pilot is usually the high point. They don't actually know where they are going with this idea so you can't help but have muddled thinking, inconsistencies, plot holes, ignored side plots, and other problems as the show continues to its unsatisfying cliffhanger ending just before it's canceled.
I don't know how I missed this thread. I was never sold on the premise or the trailer, but I watched the pilot anyways. It felt like an Abrams show. Of course I'm in until the end, but there are too many things we're asked to suspend belief for... Cubs World Series?
Why would you watch it given the premise and the lack of quality. It's like Spielberg's Crappanova. I watched a few, but it was so bad that I gave up except to fast forward through the finale to see how they handled it.
It took me nearly a week to get around to watching it since I wasn't that interested, but I did hoping it would surprise me. I hadn't watched a full trailer. I didn't read any previews or reviews. I didn't fully know what it was. I was hopeful. It only took about 3 minute to frustrate me though. The final minute or two made me want to punch somebody.
Yeah I saw the pilot and can safely say this thing will be lucky to make it past the first season. I kinda feel bad for the lady who plays the mother in the opening scene. Since Lost went off the air she's been V, Flash Forward and now this.
Just watched the pilot. Didn't dig it as much as I was hoping, but I'm not going to give up yet. the main characters are on a quest and at least while that lasts, and there is action, it'll be entertaining if not necessarily 'good'. I can't really add anything to the issues already being addressed in this thread. Hopefully it picks up in upcoming episodes. Based on the characters introduced so far and the provincial setting, this should might do well with a mini arc to deal with the story line that's been set up in the pilot before expanding the world in later episodes. Otherwise, it's going to drag on and just become too contrived/convenient/and full of side plots that go nowhere. But I'm guessing that won't be what they actually do, so oh wells.
From all the talk and squabble over this show, i feel like im the only one who is really excited for this show and its potential. Whatevs.
