If it’s like every other footy streaming platform I’ve used, it will for sure be quite behind live/TV. IIRC, Peacock for EPL games adds 20-30 seconds. (too lazy to look up my plethora of ranty posts above about this)

Collectively, the streamers need to fix that!

It's never live, there have always been delays. They used to have to beam games via old radio satellites. They used to use undersea cables, now they use undersea cables with ISPs at either end. I've noticed that Amazon Fire stick seems to buffer everything more than native apps on my TV.

Sure it's never been perfectly live, but it used to be "close enough". You used to be able to do real-time social media during a game and not worry about being so far behind that you'd get frequent spoilers.

The old technology was maybe 2 to 5 seconds behind true live. The new technology is 10, 15, 30 sometimes 45 seconds behind. Not good enough. And that's what they should work on fixing.

P.s. the fact that some streaming platforms typically have ~10 secs lag whereas others typically have 20-30 secs lag tells you that it's not out of their control to make better.

This was in The Sun (the newspaper wot supports our boys).

"When watching a live broadcast via a smart TV or digital services such as Sky Go, ITVX or All4, programmes are shown as much as 45 seconds later compared with satellite or terrestrial TV. Uswitch said a simple fix was to watch the games on BBC or ITV via an aerial cable, connected to the wall."

    Heads up:
While Peacock does have the regular USA feeds, expect them to be behind your TV provider.

For a current data point, on today's AUS-USA women's soccer match, Peacock was a full 40 secs behind my TV which is itself maybe 5+ seconds behind live because I watch TV through my DVR which automatically adds a bit of buffer. So 45 secs behind "true live" is not really acceptable in the age of social media.

In other NBC related news, the USMNT & USWNT both have both won their group and advanced to QF's. No insignificant task, especially for the men.

Edit: oops the men didn’t win group but did well to come 2nd to France. And avoided Argentina that way… could be a plus?

They play Fri 9am ET & Sat 9am ET respectively. And from what websites are telling me right now the only english coverage is via Peacock, while the only TV coverage is Telemundo en espanol.

Do we think that's going to stick that way, or do we think NBC will readjust their schedule to put these games on one of their primary english TV channels??

What else is NBC (whether actual NBC or one of their other non Peacock) channels showing at that time of the day?!?! Why relegate knock out games to their streaming platform? So dumb. I guess I can watch these first knock out games live via Telemundo, so I hope NBC puts the rest of the knockout games on some other tv channel (USA, CNBC, Telemundo, etc.).

On Friday my local NBC network shows women's diving finals and then some track & field, followed by the US women's basketball game at 11:30 ET. Considering how NBC is setting massive viewership records right now, I'd say they've got it just right for what people actually watch outside of the BS bubble.

Thanks for the response @TheJoeGreene, but if I read your post correctly, the women’s diving and track events are on NBC proper??? That allows the knockout soccer games to be on their other channels like USA, CNBC and whatever other tv channels are owned by Comcast/Xfinity.

eta: looks like @TheJoeGreene and I were simultaneously posting! :)

The BBC is getting as bad as NBC. They cut away from live events yesterday to show a British swim medley team draw portraits of each other - twice. At least there are no ads.

I'm one of the saps who watches the Times Square Ball Drop every year. For a few brief moments, I'm counting down to the new year *in* the new year because my TV isn't an antenna TV.

Then again, since I don't bet, I don't really seem to mind. It seems the people who would really be affected by such are the in-game bettors and people who follow hashtags in-game.

What I really don't like is my local 6pm news starting a bit before 6. I have to record and then back it up or else I'm halfway into the first news story. My DVR has a nice feature where it starts the recording about 75 seconds before the supposed start time (say 5:58:45pm) and ends a bit later than the announced times. Oddly enough, the 11pm news seems to start a minute or so after which is also odd, but I digress.

I've heard (albeit many Olympics ago), that women watch the Olympics like nobody's business.

There was a time when women really didn't go hang out at sports bars, except maybe when their favorite teams were playing. For a long time, sports audiences were predominantly male.

Except for the Olympics, when the whole thing got flip-flopped.

NBC caught onto this and turned their main NBC coverage into stuff women would generally watch like swimming, more swimming, holy shit even more swimming, gymnastics, etc. Of course, they also show the human interest stuff (so and so swimmer adopts rescue dogs and volunteers in an animal shelter.) If you're Joe SixPack Sports Fan who throws a six-pack back with the boys at 9am because your NFL team plays at 4pm, you're gonna find the NBC coverage to be just...dreck.

Every four winters, their coverage becomes ice dancing, figure skating, etc with maybe some skiing thrown in.

Of course they're also gonna make it USA-centric. "Here's how the USA did today. You can watch it in prime time."

Dare I say this, but they've gotten better over the past few cycles. We used to have NBCSN and the Olympic Channel, but we still have USA, E!, Golf Channel and now Peacock. At least now, they don't pretend it's live. "We're gonna send you back to the pool in a bit, but here's some gymnastics for the next 20 minutes."

My TV provider (U-Verse) also has the two Peacock channels as regular channels. The guide info never seems to be right, but meh.

I totally disagree. If you have a non-streaming provider like FiOS, U-Verse, DirecTV, Comcast or Cox, it's infinitely easier to change channels for a few moments.

I can also keep my TV on one channel while getting previews of what's on another channel. I can see if the other channel is in commercial or not without having to flip away for five or so seconds.

I can't do that on Peacock.

It'd be great if their streaming channels added pause/rewind/ff.

NBCSN ran informercials in the wee hours. Peacock has the full WWE library, every EPL game. Access to dozens of channels there’s no comparison.

Great! When I checked NBC‘s schedule earlier, it only showed the games on Peacock and Telemundo.

How much of the bolded parts above is
A). *because* women prefer to watch those sports - versus -
B). those sports are heavily spotlighted in US Olympics coverage because Americans tend to often medal in those sports. It makes sense that every country will tailor their Olympics coverage to the sports where their country excels (e.g., can win medals).
Me, I lean toward scenario B. After all, I’ve barely seen any table tennis/ judo/ shotput etc. shown on any of NBC’s tv channels or their streaming platform. Practically zero in fact.

It's almost like women are ... human.

Otherwise why would NBC cater to them? ;)

You could put it another way, the Olympics attract more casual sports viewers, to whom the human interest element is as important as the sporthing one. Given that sports fans are a captive audience they've focused on appealing to the casual ones. Many of these happen to be female. This can be very frustrating to sports fans who just want to watch competitors do their thing and some don't really give a shit that their dog ran into traffic when they were three.
