Nationwide FBI alert for semi driving through Colorado

DENVER - Concern among members of the FBI's Joint Terrorist Task Force has surfaced in Colorado. A semi-truck driving through the state on Thursday afternoon apparently triggered a nationwide alert going out to law enforcement agencies across the state Friday night.

Only a few specifics of the alert were released. Apparently, it stems from what happened at a Sinclair gas station in Byers around 1:30p.m. Thursday. Byers is about 40 miles east of Denver on I-70.

Two men described as Middle Eastern in an 18-wheeler with a white tractor truck apparently tried to put unleaded gasoline into the truck. An attendant advised them it would not work and told them they needed to use diesel.

The men fueled up with the correct gas, paid in cash and left on Highway 36, which would connect them to I-80 in northeastern Colorado. The truck has a Quebec, Canada, license plate number RS7-116. The name on the truck is Real Transport. Authorities ran a check on the license plate and said it was clear, but it does not have a current registration.

We'll never catch them unless we give John Ashcroft the power to strip them of their citizenship.

On the one hand Bush is not doing enough to protect us from terrorism. On the other hand Bush is going to far by taking away civil liberties. I'd like to know what some of you on the Left would do to strenghten America from terrorism.

    1. categorizing an agrument over american security by using terms like right and left seems wrong (for one thing, there is no more right and left wing in america, but that is another discussion)

    2. Lets say for certain that are rights of freedom, like assembly, press, travel, education, healtcare, etc. not to mention are right not to have our rights violated by police or military without a lot of due process is universal and should not be questioned.

    3. One thing i woudl like to see is actually peole put in place to defend this nation which are not political appointments. Who are not just thinking about, hey this gets me one step closer to a presidental run in eight or 12 years....

    4. How ABOUT fire one person who ************ed up during the 11 sept attacks. That would make me feel good, like maybe Bush has acutally looked at the problems around the attacks. But no one has been fired! Youre telling me, that they could find no one in the entire FBI, CIA, NSA or any security agency (including the ones I dont even know about) who has any fault in the 11 Sept. attacks.

    5. And then maybe we stop looking to fight some wars 1000 of miles away and focus on defending our borders, not closing them, defending them...like maybe pay the border patrol more then 20k-25K a year starting (same for the coast guard, I imagine)

You're assuming taking away civil liberties is necessary to pretect us from terrorism.
You're also assuming that taking away civil liberties is effective in fighting terrorism. Or that they are not merely for purpose of creating the impression that the administration is doing all it can to fight terrorism - sort of like the "Tough On Crime" measures state governors like to bring out in election years.

    Central Park South,
Why does one person have to be fired. Alot of people collect intelligence and investigate crime. The CIA was weakened by Robert Torricelli and agencies have a long history of not working with one another. Bush has overturned the Torricelli principle, strenghtened the CIA and is working hard to get agencies to work closely with one another.

    Central Park South,
Of course it is. You cannot honestly say that listening in on phone conversations won't help the government have a better grasp of whats going on. You may be against it because of invasion of privacy, however, it is still an effective tool.

Robert Torricelli and Bill Clinton instituted the "Torricelli Principle" which prevented the CIA from working with people with a shady record. Shady people can provide information on other shady people who may commit terrorism. Eavesdropping, wiretapping, racial profiling etc. helps the government track suspects that may commit terrorism. Sending CIA agents on high risk missions and allowing them broad scope to kill terrorists allows has been effective in killing 1/3 of Al Quada's top leadership. Going to war in Afghanistan and removing Al Queda from operating freely has kept terrorists on the run.

People like Tom Dashle and Hillary Clinton oppose many of these effective means of combating terrorism and that is there right. However, when they say Bush isn't doing enough to keep us secure then people realize that its just a bunch of hot air and rhetoric.

Tom Ridge and John Ashcroft will fix EVERYTHING. It's going to be great. The Geheimstaatspolizei, er I mean, Office of Homeland Security, will make sure that we're safe from terrorists and people who disagree with Bush.

BTW, anyone want to buy some of this duct tape from me?

    Central Park South,
True, it may not be as effective as weakening the CIA and sending a couple of cruise missles into Afghanistan.

Did you really ask "why anyone should get fired?"????? They should get fired becasue over 5000 people died, because of mistakes. Have you ever worked a job, are you allowed that kinda mistake power. If you were would you work as hard. I know that your answer adn every other republican is to make it an right vs. left agrument, which you did. However, I dont buy it, again, lets make it NO MORE POLITICAL APPOINMENTS FOR INTELLIGENCE AGENCEIES!!! and get rid of any of the idiots who didnt do their job in the first place.....
