Does the USMNT have one? what are the countries that do? are they official or just nicknames that get picked up?
This should probably answer your questions.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_football_%28soccer%29_teams_by_nickname
That Wikipedia entry is pretty good, but it missed a few. Perhaps I'll update it later (no, I didn't write any of what's already there). A few that comes to mind are: Colombia - "Los Cafeteros", The Coffee Makers Panama - "Los Canaleros", The Canalers Peru - "Los Incas", The Incas Ecuador - "Equipo de Medio Mundo" - The team from the center of the World Venezuela - "Los Vinotintos" - Literally the Red Wines, in usage the translation is more like the Dark Reds One of my favorites is Iraq: "The Lions of the two rivers" aka "Lions of Mesopotamia"
Of course within the U.S. we don't go around calling each other Yanks. Our nickname is a tag from abroad and not home generated. Over the years on these boards we nominate ideas but it never comes to a solid conclusion trip76. It doesn't help that no one in our soccer media can get creative either. Growing up in Houston, Hakeem Olajuwon always high talked soccer and often talked about it growing up back in Nigeria. The Nigerians call their boys the Super Eagles and that's a cool moniker. From that I got the idea of using Iron Eagles for our guys. Eagles by itself is already taken by Philly and the No Fun League and oddly enough our Rugby National Team. Tomahawks is the prefered moniker of our Rugby League NT, that's fierce and yet not over the top. I mean we are a nation that had a team called the Bullets in our nation's capitol.
Hell, the Eagles are the current two-time *defending* Rugby Olympic Champs... ...from 1920 and 1924 (the last two times it was an Olympic sport)!
