Atlanta, I'm sad to say was only 2,002 in 1970. They were playing in a small stadium south of town, probably a biiiiig mistake on their part.
Atlanta's game-by-games, 1970, at Tara Stadium ("Oh, Rhett.....") 4/11/70..St.Louis.....8,105 5/11/70..Coventry*....6,773 5/16/70..Rochester....4,212 5/23/70..Kansas City..2,667 5/31/70..Hertha*......1,782 6/13/70..Kansas City..2,333 6/25/70..Hapoel*......3,127 6/27/70..Dallas.......N/A 7/17/70..Varzim*......2,255 7/18/70..Washington...2,173 7/25/70..St.Louis.....1,078 8/08/70..Rochester....1,318 8/23/70..Dallas.......N/A 8/29/70..Washington...1,076 *International games that counted in the NASL standings. Total: 86,399. Average: 3,075. If you've got those other two games, that would be great.
Then where'd I get the 2,002 from? The soccer history site, I thought, listed the attendance as 2,002. Maybe they didn't count the international games or something. I'll look again; this may be one of those times where I'm glad I was wrong . Edit: The Soccer history site has 3,002 listed as the attendance. Hey, even with that, they did better than I thought they did; woo hoo! Colin Jose's book didn't have those games, either.
Colin's book is where I got a lot of data. That and team-by-team media guides. I went through a few years ago and rebuilt the data from scratch, because they didn't have Excel back in the day and sometimes they just made math errors. There was so many wrong perceptions out there, I just wanted some definitive idea of what teams really drew as opposed to people's memories or perceptions of what they drew and how many people were on the non-existant hills outside Met Stadium in Bloomington.
I actually thought about getting a pair of those way back when (they came in both black and white). I got a pair of Golas (now there's a name from the past) instead (show how old I am! )

This NASL web site says he was from Scotland. Do they got it wrong or was there 2 different Bobby Thomson's? http://www.nasljerseys.com/Players/T/Thomson.Bobby.htm

Wow I always wondered where this thread went. Thanks for reviving it! Soccer City, USA: The Portland Timbers and the NASL Years, 1975-1982 http://www.ohs.org/exhibits/current/soccer-city-usa.cfm
I don't know about cleats, but adidas makes either the Samba or Samoa in white, with red and blue, almost exactly like the old NASL shoe.
