That I will give you. Almost anything is better than California United. At least they tangentially worked the city initials in. At least the city they'll begin play in...
So, did the San Diego guys hire the same branding firm as the SF Deltas? Because their name and logo is just as bad .
Actually their logo isn't bad and definitely makes me hate the name less. If you look closely at the 9 and 0 they're also an S and D respectively. Which helps with the whole WTF does 1904 mean aspect of the name I hated. And of course the logo actually incorporates the name "San Diego". Makes me wonder if the official name is San Diego 1904 FC. Would have preferred a color in there, but it's not terrible. And not as random as the Deltas logo was (which was the kind of branding exercise that could have literally been tossed into any city on to any team as it had no ties to anything.) At least the SD logo has a telescope evocative of the nautical history and present of San Diego/Oceanside, and if you want to stretch it the telescopes at Palomar in the East County due east of Oceanside.
Remove the soccer ball and it would be defensible. The shooting star soccer ball throws the whole thing off for me. Mucks up the spacing. Makes it hard to read. The "S D"/"9 0" messes with my eyes to be honest. And there's something wrong with the spacing after the 0/D.
What are you basing "fairly successful" on? On the field? They won their division at 8-0-4 this year and lost in the Southeast final. They went 4-4-2 in 2016 and lost in the Southeast semifinals. They went 1-6-3 and finished out of the playoffs in 2015. They went 6-2-2 and lost in the Southeast final in 2014. They went 4-4-2 and finished out of the playoffs in 2013. In 2012 they were in the PDL and finished 3-6-7 and out of the playoffs. In 2011 they were 7-7-2 and did not make the playoffs. In 2010 they were 6-6-2 and did not make the playoffs. In 2009 they were 5-0-11 and lost in the division semifinal. And in 2008 they were 5-8-3 and out of the playoffs. But none of that means eff-all when it comes to moving up. You have to have the organizational wherewithal, infrastructure and money to do so. And while I keep hearing they draw okay, they never respond when I ask them for data. You'd think we would have heard about it if they were really drawing well. If you are going to try and equate New Orleans with Detroit and Chattanooga, we cannot have a conversation. Profound, that. There is a reason not just other clubs have tried and failed but EVERY CLUB THAT HAS TRIED HAS FAILED. Ambition is great. But if you try and tell me you want to be an astronaut but you have shown no aptitude for math and science by 10th grade, I am going to be skeptical you are going to ace that part of the SAT and be training in Huntsville anytime soon. More precisely, it will be an additional owner's money, because I see no evidence they are well-financed. Or that they are a lower-level success story. The Austin cover story was bullshit. That stadium was operative by Labor Day. The next NPSL team that goes pro and succeeds will be the first. It surely could be Detroit or Chattanooga. I see no reason to believe it will be New Orleans.
I honestly do have a physical reaction to it. The spacing and the weird ambiguities make it difficult for me to focus on it without neurological and visual discomfort. It has a kind of Magic Eye effect that is uncomfortable. The old woman, young woman illusion also comes to mind. Nothing about the logo is comfortable to look at without your eyes and your mind jumping around.
Probably because your eyes can't decide if it's an SD or 90... Same is it a telescope or a starred ball soaring. I imagine it'll look better smaller and far away on a shirt.
What is it about pro/rel that turns people into willful morons? Who could seriously look at North American soccer 20 years ago, 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago, compared to 2017 and think that it's "off track"?
To be fair, it works conversely as well. There is a segment of the blogging populace that can only survive by feeding on and exploiting negative emotion.
I am told by a local that 19 and 04 are how a certain segment of the populace refer to the city, by the positions in the alphabet of the letters S and D.
After reading on here, Reddit, & social media it doesn’t seem like many locals are familiar with the slang term.
Lived here a decade and I’d never heard it. Members of my family who’ve lived their whole lives here have never heard it either.
Same here. I lived in San Diego for all but 5 years of my life. Off the top of my head I couldn't connect it to anything locally historic. Skimmed Wikipedia to see what I was missing. Didn't see the year anywhere. It's bad enough that Im going to have to tell the people I talk to about the sport that the new local team name is a four digit number. On top of that, I have to also explain the meaning of that number? (which I have just learned myself?) Nothing comes easy with this sport. smdh
