Re: So a new NASL is starting up next spring. I really hope these clubs have 100% commitment to make this new league prosper. I really hope they aren't breaking off just in spite of the USL. I want to see this league be different than the USL from structure to marketing. I don't want to hear their talk, I want to see it. I would love to read their business plan. I'm not opposed to the new NASL, not one bit, but their motives must be for prosperity of the game and not because the TOA is pissed at USL. I'm curious to see how this all goes down; how the start up is going to work. I'm interested in what the league does, where the league goes when Vancouver, Portland, and potentially Montreal department. I'm all for a "true" 2nd division to MLS but like I said, I want it for all the right reasons not because of bitterness/anger towards the USL. Soccer in North America is on the up and up and I would hate to see failure. Failure is my biggest fear and I pray these group of owners have their proverbial shit together.
Welcome back NASL! Just received the email, check it out! http://www.carolinarailhawks.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=793&Itemid=141
Re: Welcome back NASL! I guess no one owns the name NASL not like how if NY wanted to rebrand to Cosmos, they would have to pay millions
Re: Welcome back NASL! It's NASL-related. But to make it MLS-related, note this part of that article: MLS steered away from all the negative aspects of the NASL, but they also steered away from all the positive aspects.
Re: Welcome back NASL! well, probably because they will have a relationship with MLS somehow in the future, and it seems the moderators are slackers and don't have a NASL forum up yet...
Re: So a new NASL is starting up next spring. As long as they bring back the red, white and blue ball, it's all good...
Re: Welcome back NASL! Assuming that list of teams is accurate, USL-1 is left with very few teams.... is that the final list of teams for 2010 or will more be jumping to NASL?
Re: Welcome back NASL! Agreed. I never understood MLS' pathological need to act as if the NASL never existed, refuse to acknowledge the players and individual season records of its teams, etc.
Re: Welcome back NASL! Charleston relegated themselves to USL-2 Cleveland will probably go down too. USL-1 is left with 5 teams. Rochester will probably go to NASL and USL will not have enough teams for USL-1.
Re: Welcome back NASL! USL is a joke IMO, and this is MLS related because well you might not realize this but the Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club will be in MLS in 2011 and Montreal is trying to get into mls and I believe Atlanta and Miami were also in the mix before Portland and vancouver got the bids.
Re: Welcome back NASL! This is also why it's MLS related: “The Charleston Battery has never been a part of TOA, not because we disagreed with some of the legitimate complaints they had about how USL1 operated in the past, but because we totally disagreed with their stated vision to be a viable alternative league to Major League Soccer (MLS) and to compete with MLS on and off the field. This made absolutely no sense to us,” said Charleston Battery CEO Tony Bakker. http://www.charlestonbattery.com/news.asp?y=2009&page=1&id=484
Re: Welcome back NASL! Wow there are a lot of threads on this subject.......I'm having trouble keeping up!
Re: So a new NASL is starting up next spring. I agree too many times in the history of the game in America..it's been the wars between ideologies that have come to destroy it. It could have built upon its strengths from the teens and 20's of the early part of the 20th century and been really huge today. It's very easy to be elitist and think that your organization is best, but in the end..What is good for the sport?? I wish it well also..to prosper!! Good Luck NASL..so weird saying and typing it!! lol
Re: Welcome back NASL! This may not be the case in all MLS cities that once had NASL teams, but the Fire have wholeheartedly accepted the legacy of the Sting. They have had at three reunions (even without Karl Heinz Granitza), including one just last month. Frank Klopas, Fire's Technical Director, was a Sting player.
Re: Welcome back NASL! There's a statue of Eusebio outside Gillette Stadium partly to appeal to the New England Portugese community and because of his season with the New England Tea Men.
Re: Welcome back NASL! He was also a Fire player. Not that it materially changes anything about your post. Just worth remembering. He had one of the most important goals in franchise history, bringing us the Open Cup in our first season.
Re: Welcome back NASL! Well, Seattle and San Jose certainly have embraced their legacies to one degree or another. My childhood love was the NASL and I've always thought the league's name far surpassed the MLS name, so I'm glad to see it potentially back in use. Now if the Rapids would just change their name to The Caribou of Colorado and wear jerseys with dangly bits
Re: Welcome back NASL! I knew that saving that white and blue ball with the red stars would come in handy 30 years later! I'll have to call my Dad to find it in the garage.
Re: Welcome back NASL! Welcome back NASL. Very excited about what the future holds in store! I recently left MLS after been a support from the start! I left due to many things... (RSL). Living in Florida....now a staunch supporter of Miami FC! and NASL! Good luck NASL! looking forward and very excited!
Re: So a new NASL is starting up next spring. Very excited about NASL! MIAMI FC! I have been a supporter of MLS since the begining. I am now boycotting MLS due to many reasons (one being RSL). Looking forward to the future! Good luck NASL!
