Yeah, talk to Predators and Hurricanes fans about how the NHL doesn't work in the South. Neither team has a waiting list a mile long, but both have built pretty sold fan bases. And, while I'm not an NBA fan, it's my understanding that the Grizzlies are doing just fine as well. The reason people think the South can't handle pro sports (other than football) is that Atlanta, the most prominent city in the South, has had a series of franchises with terrible ownership. Has nothing to do with thinking soccer/hockey/basketball is inferior.
and i'd like to add, "ya never know until you try..." to this mix. give it a shot. plug in one franchise down this way and see what happens... "ya never know until you try..."
So Grizzlies part owner & CEO Jason Levien is also the principal and part-owner of DC United. Has there been any talk of Levien talking to Memphis peeps about putting a MLS team there?
Like I've said before, I am from Alabama and live in Alabama. College football is my number one. I don't watch NASCAR. I usually watch one NFL game a year, the Super Bowl. The only people I know down here that follow NFL are Yankees. I think there is a place for soccer down here.
Happy Who Dat Day! But it goes to my point. In Alabama, there is Atlanta, N O or if you live in Huntsville, the Titians. A soccer team in Birmingham would get all of Alabama, Mississippi, and parts of Tennessee. Maybe parts of West Ga. There is a large amount of people from West Ga. that go to Auburn. Birmingham is a good location.
I think b'ham has around 13 million people within a 4 hour radius. May be more, but that's from memory. NASL would be excellent, but if some rich guy said "B'ham!" and Garber said "So be it!" then I'd be in with a shout!
http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...e-fc-supporter-owned-soccer-club-music-city-w Could fans bring MLS to Nashville like Portland did?
Well if that were the only real hurdle, then Nashville CERTAINLY could. There are a lot of wealthy people in the Music City.
Just saw this online and thought this would be a good place for it.....Can't believe 38 years have passed since the Memphis Rogues first played....
I'm from Memphis originally, and the Only club in Tennessee that would matter to me, would be The Memphis Rogues...with their short history or not. But realistically, they wouldn't succeed, and Memphis sucks these days.
After falvo's post of the Rogues' poster I ended up going back through this thread. I was pretty hard on Memphis - rightfully so, to a degree - but to be fair, there are people trying to drag the city into the 21st century. But no, they will never I don't see the day when they will be able to support an MLS team.
