As far as islands go, some recognize four main types: Continental islands - an island with an entire mountain range on it (such as the island of New Guinea) High island - a volcanic island usually composed of a single mountain or two peaks within close distance (such as Tahiti, the big island of Hawai'i, etc) Atoll - an island that is comprised of a coral reef surrounding a lagoon (such as many of the Tuamotu Islands, the Northern Cook Islands, I believe the Maldives, etc) Makatea - formerly an atoll but plate uplift has caused the land to move up, so now you have a very flat island usually with cliffs around it (the former reef), with a small shallow lagoon (such as Atiu, Ma'uke and Miti'aro in the Southern Cook Islands, Tongatapu, Tonga, etc). Of note, it was famed biologist Charles Darwin who worked out how island formation occurred.
I wish they'd come up with some official standards British geographical and governmental terms. I propose England and Scotland - countries Wales - principality Northern Ireland - province Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Falklands etc - crown dependencies Britain - an island Great Britain - a sovereign state Canada - British America Britons - British people, not Brit!!! Which thread is this again?
A pedant writes. Falklands is a British Overseas Territory not a Crown Dependency.... Have to add in the British Isles as well. Just to confuse people.
I'm confused. Is Nashville a sovereign state or its own island? Or is it living in its own private Idaho, rolling on the ground like a wild potato?
Hell, everything between the Mississippi River and Appalachia (whatever that is) is Virginia Territory.
Jeez, guys, where have you been? Nashville's a suburb of Bucksnort, TN. EDIT: Real place About an hour west of Nashville. And if you want to keep up with all the news that is news in Bucksnort: https://www.facebook.com/places/Things-to-do-in-Bucksnort-Tennessee/108081969212316/ So don't be surprised if the team ends up being called the Nashville Bucksnorters FC.
I've been there and have a Bucksnort Truck Stop t-shirt. It is in Hickman county. I thought that was a fitting county name for Bucksnort. I am pretty sure I have taken my picture at that exit sign with friends when I was a teenager. That was before digital and smartphones so the photo is probably long lost now.
Yea, I hear their #1 industry is t-shirts. Their #2 industry is trying to catch people pulling off the exit ramp to relieve themselves.
David McCullough relates a story about a young woman, probably freshman or sophomore, approaching him after a speech he had given at an Ivy League university. She remarked that, until his talk, she had never realized that the original thirteen colonies were all on the east coast. I always assume it was Yale. Why? Because Claire Danes went there. While she was there, she starred in Les Miserables, the non-musical film with Liam Neeson. Appearing on the Letterman show, Dave asked her, "So, what time period is this?" And she just looked...flummoxed? Flabbergasted? Aghast at having to answer a factual question about a very famous book that details historically significant events? Whatever her true feelings on the subject were, it was clear she did not know. Come on! Old actors knew learned horsemanship and swordplay! You can't even be bothered to learn the setting?
Island is far to the west of England. It was exciting when the recently qualified for the Euros for the first time. So much spirit, there in Island, with their Nordic chanting.
So does this make Great Britain a Continental Island then? Continental breakfast will never taste the same again...
Speaking of which.. Tokeland, WA banned marijuana retail stores and grow operations.. Opportunity lost, I must say..
Too bad! I was going to open up an "emporium" at a nice retail place at 420 Tokeland Rd., Tokeland, WA
Britain sits on the European continental shelf but we refer to mainland Europeans as "Continentals". An English breakfast is eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, mushrooms today and maybe black pudding. A continental breakfast is bread.
The english breakfast is the only english cousine that I cherish and desire. Perfect hangover breakfast with a nice Ale. Fish and chips and sausage rolls are good but once you eat one you eat them all. The rest I wouldn't touch it with a tent pole. I think Nashville has better food that the whole british isles.
Well, I would rate the whole strip of Indian places in Rusholme in Manchester over most anything. Well, the places with Indian people eating there, as opposed to pasty white yobbos in Citeh or Yinnoi-id tops.
