Possibly the single biggest mistake the WUSA made was to tell sports fans that it was "a different kind of sports league." Or in other words, "don't trouble yourself, spend your money somewhere else."

We are tribal at our core. We pick a team and hate the rest. It doesn't matter whether it's peewee flag football or world cup soccer, girls cross country or the NFL.

If the WPS wants to succeed, they need sports fans. Not all sports fans will embrace women's soccer, but then not all sports fans embrace every sport. It's the culture of the sports fan that must be embraced.

It is obvious to me that a name from the not so decent Chicago past should be resurrected:

    The Chicago Marshall Fields!!!

I'm from the 'tailgate crowd'...and I brought my sister and one of my nieces (she's nine too) to the USA V China game at TP...she still talks about it now and then...so I have to agree that the nine year old girls should be one of the target audiences...even though that's just useless corporate jargon invented by a flawed research dept....because quite simply, the more people you reach out to...the more $ you get...

    to promote Women's Professional Soccer.

I spose this is the top ten:

    .

Like Houston 1836...but without all the murderin'.

Great name for the manic depressive crowd!

    Everyone loves a massacre!

    Progress? Really?

No tie-ins with the Fire here...

    Everyone loves a riot!

    PU

Why not 'twin towers'? Oh, yea...right...

    Is Chicago Corruption taken?

I'll vote off 1871. I've never liked years as names.

Plus, I think 1871 is keeping a secret stash of beef jerkey in its pocket.

Well if they go with the Red Stars, then can go with the city's flag as their jersey. Similar to the Fire's third jersey from when Puma sponsored the team. And if Adidas brings back the third, both teams could wear them if they had double-headers. Just a thought. Probably wont pan out in the long run.

How about like Red Star Belgrade's uniforms? Horizontal red stripes on jersey with red/white shorts and red/white socks.

if we would go in this direction, i believe we would need to emphasize the connection to the city of Chicago flag and would wear uniforms with broad horizontal white and sky blue stripes...though i like the idea of a third strip modeled after the Fire's home jerseys to build that connection.

Chicago Stinking Onions is my new favorite.

Much, much better than the other choices.

Please don't besmirch the glorious name of Crvena Zvezda. Plus, it is too masculine of a name for a female team. I suggest something more feminine like Dinamo Chicago or Chicago Split.

    Why not just the Flames.

First, what about the "Red Stars" is specifically masculine? I thought it's about the history of all of Chicago, not just the male half.

Secondly, what does masculinity/femininity have to do with a team name? A good name is a good name, regardless of gender. Are you trying to say that women should play with a soft-fuzzy-cute-pc name or theme just because they're female? If so, I think you need to get over your '50s era concept of what's feminine. Most women now prefer (and deserve) to be seen as strong, independent, and capable - not prissy and fragile.

If that's not what you're implying, sorry for the rant. :p

Also, the Chicago franchise is trying to avoid names that sound as if the women's team is an off-shoot of the Fire. There are ties between them, yes, but they are separate programs.

Unfortunately, the tie-in would give them a bigger fan base to draw from.

    How about, Chicago Sirens?

WIND? No thank you. I can hear the jokes now. The only thing missing is the Earth. Earth, WIND, & FIRE. Plus didn't the wind help the fire spread?

I am from Breakers territory, but really think that Sirens just WORKS at a lot of levels for Chicago.

It was an inside Balkan joke, no offense to women was intended.

If you want to stick with the Red Star motif.

    How about Kurvana Zvezda?

Again, sorry for the rant. I get frustrated over real life things and take it out on people I've never met.

I kind of like the Riot actually. It might be seen as too violent by some, but there are names (and logos) like the Raiders, Bombers, Buccaneers, Warriors, etc., that everyone seems to accept. And Riot would actually have something to do with the heritage of the city.

    Thank you.

I mentioned Sirens to Peter right after hearing about the new league, and I suppose the magic has since worn off.

Riot is good...but what about Chicago Maniacs...Hmmm

    Hi!

From a european horizon "F.C." or WFC would be the natural choice.

Chicago WFC ?? That should sound fine in my european ears :)
