So, there they are. He also said there could be variations on the names. My vote is for the Highlanders. Glory is just terrible. The other two are so-so I think.

Real Salt Lake is beyond awful. Alliance and Glory both suck to an equal degree. Highlanders isn't great, but it is far better than the other three.

Alliance? As someone in the original 'narrowed down' thread said 'Might just as well name the team Clash or Burn.'

I find it interesting that Glory was mentioned (which, IMHO, is right up there with Clash) when we've been talking about purple uniforms, and the Aussie league Glory images were linked in.

Us soccer folks will be able to call Real Salt Lake 'Ray-al'... but 99.5% of the general public are going to wonder who the Fake Salt Lake is they need to distinguish themselves from.

Me, I'm going to bet that we're going to get Salt Lake City Highlanders.

    I like it.

:D That was me from the other thread.

Of those four, i pick Highlanders.

EDIT: And if people from Salt Lake know anyone with access to the decision makers, give them the link to this thread. Or email it yourself!

That's a disappointing short list. Highlanders is the best name by far.

Alliance? Ewwwww. Real SLC? Please. Glory? Oh boy...

Seriously, I can't believe this made any list at all, much less the shortlist of 4. I can't imagine a better way to open up the league to attacks about its quality than to comparing this team, very very explicitly, to probably the best club in the world. Christ.

Cheerleaders in kilts? Females, of course, and short kilts.
Call them "The Highland Lassies," and a collie could be the mascot.

No, I am not joking. Pity me or flame me, I just think it's a neat idea.

    I like Highlanders a lot

Just make sure Chris Lambert is there to open it

(and you might want to have Roddy Piper and a keg of beer there too. Fun for the whole family)

    Salt Lake Glory?

They got a WUSA team there now, too?

Of those choices, I'd pick Alliance, I think.

Royal would work better than Real.

    Royal Salt Lake.

I'm upset Olympic or Wanderers aren't being considered.

    But, I like Highlanders enough.

Well, if you're into cheerleaders - I suppose the tartan kilt would make a fine part of a schoolgirl outfit :D

and BTW, the Fake Salt Lake is in Pamela Anderson's breasts

    Wow.

I was staying out of this whole naming debate, trusting those in charge to make a good decision. Especially in light of the comments made in the media about selecting a "european" or "traditional" name, avoiding the letter z, and what not. But I can see my faith in the ownership was unwaranted. Real? Give me a break. Glory? Unbelievable. Aliance? Well, I wouldn't call it terrible, but it get's a big sigh and shrug from me.

Highlanders isn't bad (and by far the best of the lot), but if were going with the mountian/nature theme, Wanderers and Rangers are far better names.

Please, please, please - someone stop this train wreck before it leaves the station.

    Highlanders/Wanderers/Rangers or something similar.

No Real, no Glory, no Alliance. No, no, no. Hell, with names like that, why not just go back to Boom!

If I recall correctly, teams in Spain were given the "Real" title by some ordination of the king or something rather.

Naming SLC that would be inexplicably lame.

But, we could start a similar tradition here in America! The President could ordinate teams! It would rock. Just imagine: Presidential DC United or Executive MetroStars.

    Wow is right.

I thought they were going for traditional sounding names. 3 of those 4 SUCK . Badly.

Highlanders is far and away the best choice. It makes sense locally, sounds good. You can build an identity around it, (posted mascot excluded :D )

But those other 3 names are just way dumb. This does not give me great confidence in their future logo, color and uniform choices.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with my wife last night. I was telling here why Utah Yeti would be a cool name: the quasi-illiteration and reference to snow, etc.

She reminded me that if I had to explain why a name was cool, that negated any coolness factor that it had.

I agree that the same principle would apply for Real.
