I was in high school in Orlando when they came up with "Magic." It was a fan vote in the Orlando Sentinel in 1988 or 1989. I think the alternatives were worse: Orlando Challengers (three years post Challenger crash) or Orlando Juice (if OJ had been in the front office, lives could have been saved!).

I want to write in Philadelphia Phury or Philadelphia Furries.

    Although the Magic did happen to pick a color that matched Christy McAuliffe's eyes for a team color;

[result]blue (one blew that way, the other one blew that way)[/result]

BIG Mistake, not keeping Jameer (a CHESTER native) in Philly!

    That's not too difficult...

This week's SI quotable is from Andre Igoudala:

    "We suck in practice too."

Now, now...I wasn't looking to "start" anything. But, with everyone's consensus pick (Athletic) likely off the table because of trademark issues, I see there is a schism between those who want to Europose, and those who would prefer something a little more "American."

So I merely offered "Atoms" as a sound, manageable compromise.

Rest assured...I would have offered "Phalanx," but Bryan hates "x"s...

FWIW, I don't think "consensus" is correct. Perhaps "plurality" is more accurate -- I doubt there's really a consensus for any individual name given the differences in opinion.

Your selective memory betrays you, my friend. As mentioned previously, I hold no love for "Phalanx." My preferences lay with "Legion," though I now admit that even that wasn't the best of ideas.

    Steve ♥ "Atoms"

Well Athletic name has more than one sport AC Milan have a Chess team, Rafting club, Tennis club and etc.

But if AC Philadelphia comes in as the name then the orginization has to have more than one sport and thats a fact.

Sometimes teams sport a big Name Like Man U its complete name is Manchester United Football Club.

AC Phialdelphia sound's good or like this

Athletic Club Independence of Philadelphia (or just AC Philly)

One question what should the club be nickname?????

    Every team has a nickname

    Juventus FC (old lady)
    Real Madrid (The Meringues)
    FC Barcelona (Culers)
    SS Lazio (Aquilotti (Young Eagles))

    I say

    The Lovely Brother's

Well, it's clear now. With no majority in this (latest) Final Round of voting and these fantastic new suggestions, we'll need to go back and re-start the process (again).

Philadelphia Athletic SC is perfect, but if there are copyright problems, then I am really not a huge fan of AC Philadelphia. It just doesn't sound right. I know that I am contradicting myself because Athletic SC/FC is borrowed from Charlton, Oldham, etc, but it just fits. How about good ol' Philadelphia SOCCER Club (no nickname), and we'll call them the Blues (main team color).

And I guess that's why they call us the Blues...

Because... it's just in my nature to root against anything called The Blues.

We can't be called Philadelphia Soccer Club because there already is a Philadelphia Soccer Club. AC Philadelphia sounds good to me, or something like Philadelphia City SC.

AC Phialdelphia would be the choice but you guys knoe that the acroynm AC means Athletic Club which not on one sport but two or more.

AC Milan Has chess team, tennis, Golf, and Basketball.

and on the note the nicknaming can wait that process is done by the fans itself trust me on this
