    AC Philadelphia is silly.

God, I cannot stand the non-anglo European name rip offs. I identify AC with the Italian league (AC Milan, etc). We live in an english speaking country, FFS.

Even Philadelphia AC bothers me. It's too inside. I think fringe fans will feel alienated by having no clue what it means. I believe there is a certain demographic we can win over and I don't think that name would do us any favors.

Keep it simple. Philadelphia FC. Let a nickname grow organically (ie Toronto "Reds").

If anyone says "There are already two FC's in the MLS" you're getting hit.

If it would result in a crap nickname like "Reds" (or "Hoops", thank you FC Dallas) then I'd rather not get a name "organically". I mean, can you get more boring than just calling the team by its primary color (or two)? I'd by the "let the nickname grow organically" thought if it actually could result in a someone interesting name, but I'm skeptical that it could in this day and age.

And FWIW I personally like "AC Philadelphia" if we are going to go the lame minimalist Europoser route.

What exactly do you have in mind then for a nickname? I mean what could be better than a name growing based on what the fans are calling it?

Honestly, I don't think that the fan base will "come up with" anything of consequence. It'll just be a generic name like the primary color (ooh, maybe we'll be the "blue and yellow") or some shorthand/abbreviation like "Philly" or "PFC". The collective fanbase is unlikely to start calling the team some mascot-like name. A fan vote could establish a nickname -- but that can be frought with some problems and I don't think MLS wants to go that route anymore.

And what do I have in mind for a nickname? Independence, which is why I voted for it in the poll. By far the best I've heard and I like it.

So you'd rather force a nickname upon a fanbase than let them decide what they want to call them? Who cares if it's the Blue and Yellow if that's what they want?

You should ask the dude he took a swing on Saturday at the game. BTW that was hysterical.

I still like simply appending SC to Philadelphia but if the team needs a nickname may I submit something ridiculous. Philadelphia Scrapplers. Insinuates scrappiness, the Philly underdog ethic, but allows us to throw pork byproducts at the opposing team during corner kicks. "Hey Beckham, here's some lips and buttholes, enjoy!"

SC, FC, AFC, AC are all fine with me. I'd also take Locomotive or Commodores.

I did no swinging. I pushed him down, then pushed him down again when he tried to get up. I wasn't trying to hurt him.

A good, middle-ground compromise. No European pretentions to irk Davey. No "z"s to piss off Bryan.

    I'm here to help...

At least Atoms is a "silly name" with a history, as opposed to Electrons, etc.

History goes a long way. I mean, is Phillies the worst name in a major sport or what? But everyone deals with it because it's been around for over 125 years.

    No, it isn't.
    I humbly submit;

    • Raptors
    • Devil Rays
    • Packers (a name that would never fly today almost makes this cool)
    • Bills (I've got it there was someone famous name Buffalo Bill, lets call em the Bills)
    • Blue Jackets
    • Wild
    • Mighty Ducks
    • Magic
