    Couldn't disagree more. What is needed is for American soccer to forge it's own identity, different from both other US sports and european soccer league.

    Yeah, sure glad no one in Europe uses nicknames for teams...... :rolleyes:

    Guess I'll jump on the tube tomorrow and go inform the Blackburn Rovers, the Bolton Wanderers, the Queens Park Rangers, the London Wasps, the Tottenham HotSpurs, and all the other clubs that use a nickname that they're not actually in Europe.

    Isn't "Hotspur," a part of their name, though, not a nickname? I thought I remember it being a reference to a Church or a club or something like that.

    Tottenham Hotspur FC is the proper name, they are known as Spurs, but not HotSpurs

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tottenham_Hotspur

    Hotspur was an allusion to Sir Henry Percy, also called Harry Hotspur (May 20, 1364/1366 – July 21, 1403) was the eldest son of Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland, 4th Lord Percy of Alnwick. His mother was Margaret Neville, daughter of Ralph Neville, 2nd Baron Neville de Raby (c. 1291 - 1367) and Alice de Audley. His nickname is suggestive of his impulsive nature.

    Hotspur

    \Hot"spur`\, Hotspurred \Hot"spurred`\, a. Violent; impetuous; headstrong

    "In 1882 the Hotspur Football Club was formed by grammar school boys from the bible class at All Hallows Church. They were also members of Hotspur Cricket Club and it is thought that the name Hotspur was associated with Sir Henry Percy (Sir Harry Hotspur) who lived locally in the 14th century. The team later became Tottenham Hotspur to distinguish itself from another team called London Hotspur."

    Nickname=SpurS

    Don't get caught up on the semantics, the point still stands. European's use nicknames, too. :eek:

    I don't think that its semantics. The "nicknames" you pointed at aren't nicknames, but are a part of the actual team name.

    The club is called Bolton Wanderers FC, not The Bolton Wanderers. In fact, according to Wikipedia, their nicknames is the Trotters.

    Most European nicknames are names that the team acquires. I don't think anyone is against that, I think they are against the American-style conventions to stick the team with a trademarked nickname.

    What about Rugby Union. All of them have nicknames... Are they not European?

    Look, I understand that people want a name that grows over time and has a unique identity assigned to it by the fans. I get that, and I respect that. But I don't neccesarily agree with people holding the European standard up so high. Every Eurosnobs I've talked too bashes MLS relentlessly, and I'm starting to suspect the majority of them have never been to a foreign matchup. Afterall, the premiership games I've seen over here weren't *that* much better. They want the MLS to become the Premiership Jr., but I'm not for that... Instead, I'm all about a MLS tradition starting on it's own. So let the teams decided whatever they want to name themselves, and lets go for it. If it's Philadelphia FC, and they want the fans to name the team, then awesome. If it's Philadelphia Independence FC, that's awesome too. Either way, it'll be a great time. I just don't want people to hold one method of doing things up on an ivory tower so high.

    This poll excluded "sack gropers" because it was just a runaway favorite in the previous polls; this is just for a backup in case anyone objects to that name (but seriously, how could they?).
