I don't know what has happened to me lately, but my shooting has been horrible. I play forward for my high school's varsity team and they always look to me to score. But lately my shots have been weak and way off target. Can someone please give me some tips on strengthening my shot and just getting a good shot in general. Thanks
Well...there are your basics: head down, knee over the ball, non shooting foot planted beside ball, if not a bit in front of ball, follow through...and landing on the shooting foot. Also, try snapping your leg at the hip when striking the ball. That's how I get off a quick shot with a lot of power...something which would be helpful for a striker...although I play center mid.
for power, i try and hit the ball with the spot of my foot just above the knuckle of my big toe. second, position your body over the ball. people who lean back or have the ball too far out in front lose power. I see a lot of women shoot with the ball too far out in front. It goes with the head down, knee over the ball thinking. If you have a hard time getting your body over the ball, put your plant foot just ahead of the ball. It puts the ball underneath you more when shooting.
My shots also suck, I at least take them a lot more than last year. I have realized that point your toe to target is all that there is to aiming but for some reason that works when i am playing with a wall aiming for a target, then when i go to a net i suck. What practice can help me with this? What kind of practice can I try to get my first shots in games as good as my last ones in practice? To get over the ball I think about where my opposite shoulder is(shooting with left foot right shoulder) Just try to have it as far forward and over the ball as possible. For accuracy and power what works for me is i kind of try to feel my foot wrapping around ball. I don't know how to explain that really, I just try to hit the ball with my toe down and use the whole foot. This gives no spin and good accuracy normally. At the start of practise all my shots suck horribly, as I practice they get better and better but there are still many horrible ones thrown in there. each day I practice it starts horrible then gets okay. How can I learn to make it start good and get better? I have done many good shots before especially in practice, but I am not sure exactly which techniques are the most accurate and powerful. I need to increase my shooting ability to be able to score first time and off balance shots. how can I practise this?
I've found that when I work on "first time" shooting, I concentrate on my form a lot more...because if I just swing at the ball, I hit it anywhere but at the goal. So when I work on first time shooting, it carries over to regular shooting...the fact that I concentrate on my form helps me when shooting off the dribble. Maybe that'll work for you as well. I also have found that I'm a lot more accurate with my left foot because I've had to work a lot harder on the mechanics of my shot since I'm right footed. My left foot is also a lot more lethal than my right. Granted I can bend the ball ten times better with my right and the power is a bit harder than my left. But as far as being able to hit the ball where I want and keep it low and have no spin...my left is far better...why? because I worked on the mechanics for so long.
