Anyone worried about the world cup turning into a political disaster?

FIFA: U.S. govt to determine 2026 World Cup city safety - ESPN

Fifa has now admitted that trump can move matches basically at his will. He wants to move matches(and revenue) away from cities and states run by people he doesn't like.

He has already blocked Iran from attending the world cup draw.

I think at this point we can't assume business as normal will apply to events like the World Cup under a Trump administration. I could definitely see him moving a site from San Francisco to say Nashville (which would be great for me) if the right person made that suggestion in his ear.

I've watched every World Cup since 1998. I will not be watching next year because of Mango Mussolini.

So you were cool with The Putin and Qatari World Cups?

The latter particularly had serious rights issues directly related to the games

I have exactly zero political influence or control over what happens in those countries, but I did speak out against their human rights abuses at the time. With the clarity of hindsight, I regret having watched those tournaments.

You knew what you were getting with those regimes. On the other hand, US policy depends how DJT's hormones are going any given day.

    TACO…Trump Always Chickens Out

The thing about Trump is, his mental health is as bad as anyone in public life. He’s not a person so much as a black hole of neediness, a vortex that sucks in, that demands, constant affirmation of his worthiness, because deep down inside Trump can’t stand the fact that his parents withheld love, and also he’s an outer borough guy. Manhattan is the big leagues, and Manhattanites see him as a poser.

Here’s my point…Trump will do a lot of talking because if he’s not the main topic of conversation, that’s ego death for him. The more he talks about taking over cities, frankly the less likely it is; he is saying those things as a coping mechanism for the fact that he can’t control Chicago and LA and the rest. “I am too the bestest most handsome smartest most powerful boy in the whole wide world!”

I don’t really pay attention to what Trump says. I’ll get worried when Stephen Miller, aka Nosferatu Goebbels (who of course went to Dook just like Richard Nixon and a Richard Spencer) starts saying those things. If Orange County Grima Wormtongue starts talking about moving games, that will be when the alarms go off.

As it is, Trump’s psyche requires approval from others, so he won’t pass up a chance to be in the stands with various world leaders. That’s the only time he forgets that his parents and children and Manahattanites don’t love him.

What you got was Crimea Annexation and slave labor building the stadiums

Im not sure what political influence would be wielded by depriving yourself of this one.

It's a rare chance to get a World Cup in your backyard with convenient kickoff times for people on this side of The Atlantic. Go vote in midterms and/or attend protests etc but this seems like a weird stand especially when you factor in who hosted the last 2 and who's hosting in 8 years. Hell you may not love what you see when you look up Moroccos ranking in various human rights indexes in 4 years.

This thread will likely get blocked again with the left wing posters casting fear over this tournament and the right wing posters pretending he's somehow gonna be a huge benefit to it.

He'll show up in the opening ceremony, perhaps make an ass of himself at the trophy presentation like he did this summer and everything between that will be the greatest and funnest sporting event in the world

It’s my understanding that FIFA (infantino) has internally voiced concerns about rampant crime in several US cities.

That has nothing to do with whether the game you've bought hotel rooms and plane tickets for all of sudden gets shifted to another city because The Leader woke up one day and felt like it. That is the problem with this World Cup in this country. I doubt even the 1934 World Cup had this level of uncertainty.

No, but people will not spend all their time at the stadium.

It wouldn't be a surprise if FIFA had been prompted to voice concerns for supposed rampant crime in several US cities.

Yes they will likely spend much of that time in a city that's far safer than Houston and Dallas but I have a gut feeling those cities aren't gonna come under scrutiny by our leader

Well, we do a lot of really dumb things these days, and it's often more about TheNarrative@ than truth, but moving the WC from San Francisco because of "high crime" would be very dumb. Levi's Stadium is nowhere near San Francisco. It's in a spread out area of Santa Clara not far from the bay among office parks and an amusement park, and massive parking lots. There's very little crime there, and you won't even see very many people other than on game days, other than families going to the amusement park on the days it's open. And there are plenty of hotels in the south bay. It wouldn't really make sense to stay in SF unless you wanted to do sightseeing there along with attending the game(s). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Look, you can almost *see* the rampant crime happening here!

:ROFLMAO: Should have thought about that years ago when the US was selected to host ... and rampant crime was higher.

    See also ...

Guadalajara is a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and will host four group-stage matches at the Estadio Akron (also known as Estadio Guadalajara) in Zapopan. This is not the first time the city has hosted, as Guadalajara also featured in the 1970 and 1986 World Cups

    Combined with ...

Crime is a serious concern in Guadalajara, with risks of violent crime, terrorism, and kidnapping due to the presence of criminal organizations and cartels. These groups are active in territorial disputes, and battles between them have occurred in tourist areas, sometimes injuring or killing bystanders. Visitors are advised to exercise a high degree of caution.
