This is from the latest Connolly article. Is there any fact in the possible Murphy move? It's bad enough keeping the Druler, but without Murphy there does seem to be anyone with half a wit. Maybe Murphy sees no chance at the coach's job and is moving on.
I can. The Revs job would probably be his dream job but if Greg gets an extension, how does John move closer to a HC gig? He would probably be better off proving himself in a new environment and getting more experience.
Gotta disagree. It's pretty clear that they're keeping Coach Idiot around, so Murphy is stuck as a second assistant. If he has a chance to get on a faster track, I'd think he'd take it. And he probably has been told what's going on, unlike the rest of us. Androidloserus probably has a new three year deal, and Murphy doesn't want to wait that long, given that HSG doesn't like to eat coaching contracts.
I thought that when the Crew hired Murphy, Andrulis was as good as gone. Murphy is going to be a big time coach, If the Crew let Murphy go, then Crew fans have a big problem with Crew Management cause now there is no future.
See that's the biggest misconception out there. Murphy was brought in to be the GK coach and second assistant, not a replacement by the FO for Andrulis. For Murphy it was a step up from being a part-time youth coach. I don't know where this one popped up, but it's compleatly wrong. The HC, in this case Andrulis, has first and final say on who his assistants are, not the FO and all assistants are on a one year contract. Even if Andrulis did get the sack mid-season, Warzchya is going to get the job unfortunatly. Now if Murphy wants to go even higher and be a first assistant and Ellinger is offereing, then good for Murphy.
That may be right, but it seems his reputation is already cemented as one of the best assistants in the league. H'es very highly respected by collumnists and other coaches alike from the sounds of it. Even if he moved up to "first assistant" under Ellinger instead of goalkeeper coach here, does that really put him on a faster track? I don't suspect Ellinger is going anywhere soon, it's not as if he'll just step in and take over SLC after a year.
I thought the chances were only 50-50 after MLS Cup, but I'm in the 70% range on GA returning now. I just received my invoice for season tickets and I had thought HSG would replace him before invoices went out to drive renewals. I'm pretty sure they know that his style of play is less than entertaining to the majority of season ticket holders and would have wanted to build the new coach buzz - if they could. A coaching change would sell new tickets if they got a "name" coach, but not if they chose a relatively unknown (A League) as a replacement. I'd like to see Bob get the job to see his style of play and the great PR build they could get from his story. I haven't decided to renew yet...still hoping. If GA is back I may take up gardening for the excitement of watching the plants explode out of the ground and into flower - same results as the Crew in the fall.
Looks as though he's leaving to take the Rapids job with Fernando. Finally, an organization and head coach has the sense to hire him to train the first team, and really mold their side into a consistent, well-prepared winner. Place your bets-my money is now on Colorado...
i hope you are having a laugh. However, I saw murphy in Bloomington when IU was in the round of 8. Talked to him for a good 10 minutes or so (he was scouting Ryan Pore, who O'Rourke, Moor, Diederle, and Zayner just shut down). At that time he was saying how he loved Columbus, and he wanted to be back, but had not yet been tendered a contract for next season. Of course that was before Greg got his contract, so who knows how stuff has progressed since then.
It wouldn't be a bad move for Murphy, especially if he's been second fiddle to the second fiddle in Columbus. You also have to appreciate that Murphy was an assistant in New England when Clavijo was Head Coach there, and the former Revolution manager apparently has a very good relationship with Murphy. It would also be a good move for a club that's looking to rebuild it's first-team roster, while expanding it to include a developmental/reserve club. I.e, Murphy could deal with the First Team, and have primary responsiblity for the reserves... and for someone looking to do more than he did in either New England or Columbus, Colorado would present a good opportunity. I also believe he's friends with former Revolution staffer Jurgen Mainka, who's worked as head of Rapids P.R. for the past few seasons. Throw in what could be the makings of a progressive club with new ownershp and the possibility of a new stadium in a few years time... Andrulis would really suffer with his departure. The Magpie
So as the prime HC prospects get jobs elsewhere one by one, the stubborn stupidity of the Crew and the foly of them not doing what was obviously necessary continues to kick us in the ass. I used to hope Warczycha would eventually take over the team, as I have always liked and respected him as a man who - at the least - wouldn't run from the heat, hide from the tough questions and was willing to accept PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY when things got tough. Also, as a accomplished ex-player, he could speak to the team from the view that he himself had done the things he was asking them to do. I'm just afraid that by the time (June or July of this year) when the whole thing collpases around Coach Dumbphuk's head, Bobby Rifle will be so tainted with the stink that we'll have to look outside the organization in order to get a credible guy that the public will have confidence in. A real pity, particularly since the prime candidates now seem to be guys like John Harkes who may be knocking them dead with the DC U15's but really needs som MLS bench time before being a credible choice.
Merz reported what HPI had the other day, it's official...Murphy has left Columbus for Colorado. Andrulis says that with the departure of Murphy Robert will even have a bigger role with the club, he's already the 1st assistant...how could it get much bigger? They'll be looking for a new GK coach and Lapper will have less of a role in the FO and instead will be more involved on the field as a coach. My questions now: What's with Mais and what will be his role with this club in 2005?
10-4 on that. Murphy was a bright spot last season. And what's the deal with Lapper - they keep shuffling him from job to job. One day he's selling tickets, the next day he's chatting up sponsors, then he's doing "corporate" stuff (whatever that means) and now he's gonna be an assistant coach. As for Mais, I'm sure they're doing what they always do: they're planning on "evealuating" his physical condition in training. Of course, when his physical condition turns out to be "crappy" they keep him around anyway, on the hope that, like a starfish, he'll grow new ankles. Jeez, it's not 9 AM yet and I'm already depressed. Thanks a lot, fid.
