Same can be said about Müller, a very gifted talent - but that's about it. He certainly hasn't been more decisive than Sneijder at this tournament and during the season. A midfielder with five goals and one assists - as many as Villa and more than any of the other strikers mentioned above and if the Netherlands does win the World Cup, Sneijder will be the first player ever to have won the League, the Cup, the CL and and a WC in the same year. I know you all hate him but Mark van Bommel without a shadow of a doubt. According to OptaJoe the most successful tackler at the world cup by a mile.
This is getting silly. Van Bommel should not even be playing in the Final. It's astounding he only has one yellow card in the knock-out stages as he has been fouling with shocking regularity (look at this performance vs. Brazil, and yesterday too!). Suarez and MvB both helped their teams (using ill means), but let's not give them awards for it.
We're talking about his value as a player. Van Bommel's value as a player has been immense. Whether or not you like his style doesn't diminish that value.
van Bommel plays a hard game, gets in your face, gets on your nerves, probably taunts the opponent all game. But this is still a contact sport, and as he almost always goes for the ball, he never seriously injured someone else, or has the intention of doing so. You can say he's annoying, but he is THE most important player for the Dutch at this moment by recovering countless balls on the midfield. And IF they should win it I'd give him MVP as he's had the most consistent performance throughout the tournament.
I know he won't win but the best player of the tournament to me has been Forlan. He has been absolutely dominant in his games. If it is a German player I think it has to be Lahm. He has been great in making runs in addition to his defending.

The finalists are set. Germany did not make it and Klose did not score two goals in the semifinal. The MVP candidates are likely limited to Villa or Sneijder.
Pretty much. At the moment there's nothing between them, but someone like Robben could steal it with a match winning performance in the final.
