http://redbullsreader.wordpress.com/2009/02/12/red-bulls-sign-multi-year-extension-with-msg/ From the Red Bull Reader. More Steve, Shep & Tina.
are they still going to be too cheap to send the announcers on the road? That comes off as so minor league.
agreed, I can't stand when the announcers struggle to "see" who's coming on to sub, or mess up calls because they're watching exactly what we the viewers are watching. heck I think any number of us could do the same play by play they do for road games... and yes I hope they upgrade to HD this year, Knicks and Rangers get it, why not us?
I think once they move into Red Bull Arena in 2010, they will have no choice but to have it in HD. The TV Booths are HD quality.
I'm interested in this as well. I'm wondering what the financial agreement is, is NY paying MSG, vice-versa, or is it a free air time/cover production costs type deal?
That was nice to hear about. I miss the weekly talk show they used to have with Shep. Sometimes it was corny, but overall, it was a good show to lead-up to the next game.
I didn't even know there was major disagreement with Steve and Shep. They put the clowns in half of the other markets to shame.
I dont understand why people are complaining about something minor as to where the announcers are located for road games. For the next few years all of our games will be televised locally!! Just be happy about that.
There just doesn't seem to be the ratings/money to make it capable for them to do that yet. Hopefully some day soon they'll be able to hit the road with the team. Does any team's local tv deal, have the announcers go on road with them?
Not unexpected; but good to have it nailed down. I still miss JP, the best play-by-play guy for this game; IMHO he and Shep were an unbeatable combo. That said, I think Steve does a fine job and I have no probs with him and Shep in the booth. As said above, it really does look bush-league to do the away matches from home. No doubt down to ratings and $, like everything in the broadcasting biz.
Enjoy what you have, and hope for improvements in the future. It's pure gravy compared to what those of us out of the Metro area get -- which is nothing. Count your blessings, folks.
Absolutely right 4Winds; believe me, I didn't mean to be picky. As one who's in the tri-state area but can't get to the swamp, I really appreciate the TV coverage we have; quality and quantity both. And we can all enjoy JP's work, wherever we are, when RBNY are on ESPN
For me it's not a deal breaker whether they comment the away games live or from the studio. What's more important is the quality of the announcing team. Schoen and Hudson from GolTV announce from the studio all the time yet they make soccer games come to life. Games on Univision, Telefutura, and Galavision are almost always (there are a few exceptions) announced from the studio yet it doesn't take away from the excitement of the games they televise. Tommy Smythe comments Champions League from the studio. EPL and Serie A games on FSC aren't even commented!! They just put the audio the feed from Sky!! Would it be nice if they could have them live on site at Red Bull away games? The answer is yes!! Is it a life or death issue? No.
i would like to officially start a petition to force gus johnson to learn about soccer and become the official tv voice of red bull ny and the mls. he's the most enthusiastic and infectious announcer in sports today. the knicks can absolutely suck on any given night, but it's still fun to hear him live and die with the game. pair him up with wynalda, who does not hold back from his commentary at any point in time, and fans will HAVE to tune in!
Come on. You can't get someone who never played the game to do commentary. Shep Messing is by far the best commentator in the USA. I live in Chicago by the way.
