As I've said before, if he plays well enough to get a look, it's going to be really obvious. We won't wonder why he's there.
Correct. However, now playing in the Bundesliga with a top club and having started 2 games and scored 1 goal, there are signs that he's becoming a quality player. If his scoring continues, then he's a lock for Qatar.
1565545824221908992 is not a valid tweet id He's not lighting the league on fire but doesn't look as dead as many claimed.
Yeah, that was a solid goal. Pass to him required a pirouette and he made good body adjustments to get a decent shot off. Not an easy goal.
He's doing as well as one might expect him to do in MLS, as Liga MX is comparable. Nothing more, nothing less. There was never any chance for him to go to Qatar, but I do wish him well.
He's not going to Qatar without a ticket but he's not as washed as people want to claim. People were saying he looked like he couldn't move New England.
1859669437244375318 is not a valid tweet id The Jozy only scores against weaker opponents is basically debunked.
I don't think there's any real question as to which player with more than a handful of caps is or has been most criminally underrated by the fan base as a whole. It's Jozy Altidore by a mile...
Surely there is SOMEONE who has been more "criminally underrated" than Jozy Altidore given that: - After the 2009 Confederations Cup pretty much everyone thought Jozy would one day end his national team career as the all time goal scoring leader in USMNT history, and then he pretty much never scored a major tournament goal for the US again - Jozy's national team career pretty much ended with the failed World Cup qualification in 2017, and yet well into 2022 people were still speculating about a potential USMNT return, in this thread AT THE TOP OF THIS VERY PAGE Great playing career relatively speaking without a doubt, but given everyone expected more for both club and country it could still arguably be considered a disappointment...
Back from '19. I don't get the fixation with this long-departed and not particularly remarkable player. There's nothing to indicate he has been underrated.
Corey Gibbs is an example of an underrated player. He'd have been one of defender greats if not for the knee injury. But Altidore? C'mon.
Believing Jozy was underrated is fine, believing he's the "most criminally underrated" "by a mile" on the other hand... lol
No different from Reyna or Adams or any other athlete, other abilities don't matter much without availability It's tough to end up the all time USMNT goal scoring leader when you get injured at the start of every tournament.
Had we beaten Belgium in 2014, would he have been healed enough to play a part in the game v Argentina?
Yes it was and 1000x over, but who cares. His international career is a massive case of "could've been?" and if you don't believe that, then clearly what matters to you are friendlies, and matches against concacrap 2nd, 3rd and worst tier competition. I don't know why people insist on pretending the games they remember most are friendlies against Scotland in 2012 and Nigeria and Bosnia, and Gold Cup Group Stage matches against Trinidad and Tobago. We all know that's bull----. The reality is, Jozy was repeatedly injured, especially at the least opportune times for major tournaments (WC '14, Copa America Centenario, and WC '18 if we'd qualified), didn't do much against the best competition he faced when he was healthy outside of 2009-2010. So this iteration of his career was a disappointing one. In the Spiderverse, I'm sure it was fabulous, in this one, it was disappointing and let me underline this, to my mind, NOT ILLUSTRATIVE OF HIS ABILITY. But that's just my opinion, by the end, '17 qualifying, he was inexplicably actively not contributing. Utterly bizarre and OVER.
I just want to correct a statistical myth. Goals Against CONCACAF minnows*/total Landon 18/57 (31%) Clint 20/57 (35%) Jozy 8/42 (19%) *Honduras, Guatemala, Cuba, Guadeloupe, Belize, St V&G, Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda and Grenada Edited Jozy had 5 in 8 against Trinidad, which I haven't included as a minnow because ... y'know.
Who has the highest percentage vs Concacaf minnows out of USMNTers with double digit goals... guessing Wondo followed by pirate Ferreira
This seems like a somewhat arbitrary group of teams. It has Honduras, which finished 3rd in CONCACAF qualifying in 2010 and 2014, and 4th in 2018 -- above a bunch of other teams you haven't included on here like T&T, Jamaica, El Salvador, etc. They were ranked as high as 28th by Elo at one point while all three of those guys were playing. Then it has some absolutely terrible sides -- the last 5 in particular -- who never did anything of note and never rose above the deep 100s in Elo's ranking. And then it has some sides like Guatemala, Cuba, and Guadeloupe who were pretty bad, but did at least make the knockout stages of the Gold Cup during that period, and whose Elo rankings did at least rise into double digits at times, occasionally even as high as the 60s.
You can count on Jesus. Grenada 4 St Kitts 3 Mexico 1 Trinidad 5 Panama 2 Wondo Guatemala 2 Belize 3 Cuba 3 South Korea 2 Mexico 1
