Real Madrid are the best. If by most popular you mean most widely supported, that would be Man Utd because just about every kid in China, Japan, Korea etc supports them, as well as every glory hunter in any other country.

  3. Barcelona are the most overated club in the world. Except for W**v*s.

Rubbish. Reading FC used to be bigger, better and more supported than all of that lot put together. OK, that time might have been a rather long time ago but I'm not going to relent over a small detail like that.

Reading FC, formed 1871. Were any of those clubs formed then? No, ergo Reading FC were better, bigger and more supported (then).

No other professional club can match our proud achievements such as the record number of FA Cup defeats (120 I think), heaviest defeat of any professional club, 0-18 v Preston, heaviest home defeat of any league club in an FA Cup match (0-7 v Man City). Highest finisher in the football league to not get promoted since promotion began (2nd Div 1 1995)

Man U is the most popular, tons of fans across the Commonwealth and beyond.

Real have the most hardware (trophies), so that would probably make them best in most objective observers' eyes.

As a Real Madrid fan, I have to say that Real Madrid is the best club in the world. They have the most glamourous record of any team, and a very well known club too.

As for Man United, there is widespread publicity, one of the most popular clubs in the world, but I feel that it is an overrated team.

Bayern Munich is the best club in Germany, but their performance in Europe is a joke. Another overrated team.

AC Milan has finally find their form and have been playing well recently. So, I think Milan is underrated.

Arsenal is a good team, with strong and fast players. But the goalkeeper is no good recently.

How many clubs are known then? With a few clubs, it was easy to claimthat Reading was the most popular club the the world. Now, how many people know Reading Club?

What a EUROCENTRIC list you have there pal...does the WORLD you mention contain only EUROPE or can the BEST and most POPULAR soccer country in the REAL World join your little list? That country would be Brazil.

Here are the top 11 Brazilian Clubs, any of them are as "BEST/POPULAR" as any of the Euros you mentioned. Each team mentioned have a fan base between 7 and 20 Million fans throughout the country. More people than many Euro countries have total!

    Internacional - Porto Alegre
    Gremio - Porto Alegre
    Flamengo - Rio de Janeiro
Vasco da Gama - Rio de Janeiro
    Fluminense- Rio de Janeiro
    Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro
    Sao Paulo- Sao Paulo
    Corinthians - Sao Paulo
    Palmeiras - Sao Paulo
    Cruzeiro - Belo Horizonte
    Atletico - Belo Horizonte

No way should Barcelona be put that low in terms of former stars. The Hungarian trio of Kocsis/Czibor/Kubala is easily the equal of Charlton/Best/Law, not to mention the fact that Luis Suarez would come just a few years later, and Cruyff and Neeskens after him. Plus in the modern era they've boasted Maradona, Romario, Ronaldo, Stoichkov, and Rivaldo.

Hell, just the presence of Cruyff and Maradona alone just about trumps every club save Real Madrid.

I know reading football club. Not very well but i would much rather go to the madejski stadium and cheer for reading than sit and munch prawn sarnies at Old Trafford.

That would be because Brazil to my knowledge has a population of 200million whereas the highest population of any country in the EU is the UK, where we have 60million.

Brazil certainly produced a lot to soccer talents capable of winning worldcups. In addition to that, there are also soccer prodiogies too. Brazil also has many fans due to its large population. However, is it so that Brazillian clubs are well known outside their countries? Why are there so many Brazillian players in Europe? The reason why I list only European clubs is that they are well known in many countries.

Teams should be judged on their performance today. If Torquay won every single game in the season, won every game the next season, then the next, then they'd surely be among the best teams in England. Likewise, the performances of Liverpool and Arsenal are making them the best team in the EPL, while Man Utd and Arsenal are the best english teams in Europe at the moment. Obviously the players contribute to that but teams shouldn't be judged on individual players either, although teams might be praised for having the best defense/midfield/strikers etc...

Supporters shouldn't matter at all, given that it was Man utd that got all the glory supporters, and now everyone in a 5000mile radius are jumping onto the Arsenal bandwagon claiming they've supported them for years, if Bolton won the premiership the same would happen to them. Plus, it only takes about 100 people in 50000 to completly naff up the image of a clubs supporters

Man Utd have always had a huge following. In the 70's, when they had a season in the old Second Division they still had one of the highest average attendances in the country (I think it was either 1st or 2nd).
Any successful team attracts glory hunters, Liverpool and Arsenal are no different, but Liverpool and Man Utd are traditionally amongst the best supported clubs in both England and the world.

Brazilian players playing in Europe simply have to do with 2 things. Brazilian talent and Big money. All things equal all Brazilians would rather play at home.

I think Brazilian clubs are well known worldwide by people that really know soccer and that arent so "centric". Bottom line is the 11 teams I listed are great grand clubs full of history , tradition , titles and great players then and now. If you dont know who Flamengo or Palmeiras are that just reflects more you than the Brazilian Clubs.

Assuming this list is as much about popularity as it is about success, then any list that does not include Roma in Italy is off base IMO. The reason? They have MASSIVE support in Rome. They clearly are not as successful as the other three Italian clubs listed, not even remotely so. But they have a huge role of supporters - one that dwarfs the support of Lazio and is probably bigger for instance than that of AC Milan (who are still second fiddle in Milan in terms of supporters eventhough they have a big line of fans themselves). Juve interestingly draws a huge amount of support from outside of Turin. Also, looking at your list I'd say Roma have been as successful as a club like Valencia on the domestic stage. Valencia won their first title in 30 odd years last season. Heck even Roma wins a title every 20 years or so. How do I make one of those wink items?

I'd also argue that you should include some of the S.A. clubs. River, Boca, Independiente from Argentina. Sao Paolo, Corinthians, etc. from Brazil. How about America and Chivas from Mexico? They have huge followings there. Anyway, it is a little known fact, but Independiente has more continental and international club titles than any other club on earth.

In any event, looking at your list I'd say the most popular/successful clubs are:

    Real Madrid
    Juventus
    Bayern Munich

    Probably in that order.

Year in and year out these are the clubs that set the standard in their respective leagues and all have enjoyed significant Euro success as well. All of these clubs are also the most popular in their native lands. Man Utd. has obviously enjoyed great domestic success recently and in terms of GLOBAL popularity are probably No. 1. But historically they were in the woods for quite a while and their record in Europe is not as consistent as the other three big guns. Given their coffers I'd say over time they may well find their way to the same stratosphere as Real Madrid.

The South American club teams are limited by the fact that their fan base gets thin outside of their geographic regions. Except for the Argentina and Brazil national teams.

The most popular teams in the world: Man United and Real Madrid. No team can beat Man United's marketing and merchandizing machine. No team can beat Real Madrid's star power.

These two clubs also happen to be the two richest clubs in the world.

As for best club, I plead the 5th. Actually, the best club is whatever your favorite club is.
