I'm limiting this to teams that have failed to win a championship, excluding defunct teams.

Now I'd have to go with the Revs for consistent sustained futility.

But nobody excels at the ridiculous like the Metros, so they get my vote. How, exactly, did they manage to miss the playoffs this year? I mean, c'mon, DC sucked all season, except for against one team...

Tampa Bay, 2001, no question. (Well, I'm certain others will question my pick, especially since Mr. Reilly said defunct teams are excluded. But they were so bad they'll forever be etched in my mind.)

    And the winner is..............

The Metros. From start to finish, the most inept, incompetent, pathetic, nauseating franchise since, well, ever. One decent season, and that is it. The list is too long to go over, but I will have word of its finish in 60 to 90 days. Here is a partial list

    Charlie S***itanno
    Stooge and Suby
    Stadium (um, what stadium?)
    Lothar
    Branco
    Tabare
The First Expansion Draft (Matt Knowles, Andrew Restrepo, Dan Barber. Hell, all they had to do was draft as many LI Rough Riders as possible and they would have had a good team)
MFO blunders too numerous and elongated to list here. For examples, it would be best to ask any ESC member or Metrofan who posts on these boards

This club had a foothold in the best media town, and most knowledgable fans, and came out with utter tripe, and ended up alienating a huge portion of the NY footy fans (granted, this may also have something to do with the high ratio of Eurosnobs in NYC, but still.......broken promises. crap drafts)
I don't think the MLS's chances in NYC will ever fully recover from the mismanagement of the toxic swamp dump that is the Northern Jersey Metrostars.

I should have made this the second most pathetic team. Yeah, Metrostars are in a class by themselves, unfortunately.

Most Pathetic for one Year: Tampa 2001.
Very close second was Bora's Metros.

Most Pathetic Franchise: The Revs. Sorry.

Missing the MLS playoffs in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 takes some doing. The mathematical odds of missing the MLS playoffs 4 years in a row is 4.166%.

    Something else was at work.

DC United is 3-quarters of the way there!

Next spring, as we begin year 8 of MLS, DCU run the risk of having it's second 4-years being as bad as New England's first 4-years!

But since the Revs made the playoffs in 2000, that's pretty moot, isn't it?

The only team to miss the playoffs four times in a row is the San Jose ClashQuakes, 1997-2000. Does winning one MLS Cup make up for that kind of futility?

Hell No! ;) He he he

To bad the Wiz fans can't think like you. ;) They still think they are champions or something...

    Anyway...

For being gifted the best players and still finding a way to suck to the nth degree, the Metros win hands down.

We are champions and I've got the Frosted Flakes to prove it!! I've also got the San Jose Frosted Flakes. No Galaxy flakes.

This moron voted for LA. "Pathetic" != worst. Pathetic is a team the league does everything for and always chokes at the worst momenet. The Buffalo Bills of MLS. That's not really fair to the Bills as they were major underdogs all but the first year. The Galaxy are usually favorites and blow it. Isn't it just too f-ing exciting wondering when the Galaxy will blow it this year? Life is good.

In all fairness, Metrostars deserve the award. Heck, I should have just made this a second most pathetic team, but I blew it.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp If the current playoff system was in place back in 1999, though, San Jose would have made the playoffs that year (in the 7th seed, but still...)! :p

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Absolutely - especially since the team didn't revert back to its past futile ways the following year (finally having a stable front-office and a good coach makes a heckava difference, don't it?)! ;)

You forgot Jim "The only way you could get me out to a soccer game is if my kids were to drag me out" Leahy, who the geniuses hired as the Metros first marketing guy, which is the equivalent of hiring Jackson Browne to do commercials for nuclear power ...

and that's why I said it was a partial list. If I've forgotten anyone else, feel free to chime in by all means. BTW, you are correct and thanks for bringing up that particularly painful memory. At least the others, misguided and deluded as they were, cared a whit for the game and the team.
