BURN ASSISTANT COACH STEVE MORROW RESIGNS FROM COACHING STAFF DALLAS – The Dallas Burn announced today that Assistant Coach Steve Morrow has resigned from his position effective immediately due to personal reasons. Morrow, who was in his first year as an Assistant Coach after two years as a player, spent the last week in London, where his wife and children reside. “Ultimately, we all understand how important family is and therefore we respect his decision and wish Steve and his family the best of luck,” said Burn Head Coach Colin Clarke. “We are disappointed to see Steve leave. He was an important part of what we were doing here, from the tactical side as well as helping to build team unity and chemistry.” “This was one of the hardest decisions of my life,” said Morrow. “This purely boiled down to a decision based on my family. The Burn went a long way in trying to accommodate me but I just don’t feel like this is the right move for my family at this time.” “I very much enjoyed the job and think that I meant a lot to the players which made this very, very tough for me. I’ve spent the last three years with a lot of these guys and that was the biggest draw for me to stay. I wish the team every success and I hope to see them win the Cup because they are very capable of it.” Burn President and General Manager Greg Elliott said the team has already begun the process of finding a replacement for Morrow, yet has set no timetable for the hire. “Colin and I will identify and select the best person available to fill the position,” said Elliott. “We will move as quickly as possible.”
I guess that finishes off any hope of Morrow coming back from England with our next allocation, huh? Good luck, Steve. I hope you get a position with a club over there.
That sucks. But I can understand that family comes first and foremost. We wish him the best of luck back to England. Classy player. Now who do you think should replace Morrow? Pareja could be a possibility. Mr. Dave Dir perhaps?
Man, combined with the GK coaches medical problems, the Burn's coaching staff is suddenly in shambles. And, in the midst of a three-game losing streak, to boot. I figure replacements will come from within the Burn family, with ex-players who still live in the area. I could see Ted Eck being a very good assistant coach. He wasn't the most talented player but he was smart enough to carv out a pretty long career despite his lack of talent. Players like that usually make good coaches. Is he still living in Dallas? Richard Farrer and Mark Santel would be similar type players. I know Mark Dodd is subbing for Sobieski and, quite frankly, I can't think of a better person to be the team's GK coach if the incumbant can't continue.
Dodd subbed for Sobi one day. The BUrn are "looking at options" Eck lives in Dallas. Farrer is in Law school in Austin. He may be near graduating but I am sure coaching is not in his plans. Santel I think is in KC area, but am not sure. Deering, Dir, and Dodd all still live in Dallas.
Hey...what about BRIAN HAYNES??? Shouldn't he be the most obvious choice? He's an ex-player, he's been with the organization a long time, and aside from Dir, he's the only one with coaching experience. And frankly, Dir is a coach...not an assistant.
In the past (with Stoichkov and Wierzycrcha), the "player-assistant" meant that 1/4th of the salary was off the cap.
His wife probably had no interest in experiencing another Dallas summer. I'll be a fan of his where ever he ends up.
I KNOW THAT. But there is an order. CC, then Morrow, THEN Haynes. Just like last year, Jeffries, then CC, then Haynes again. In other words he is the 2nd assistant, and has been for 2 years and 2 coaches. You would think that it is time for him to move up in the coaching staff ranks.
Morrow was a class act for the Burn, and he made a classy decision to keep his priorities straight with his family. I'm sorry his last year as a player was at Sucklake. He deserved better. Maybe he can get a coaching job in England and be an advance scout for the Burn.
That's really too bad - very disappointing. But I understand - family first. London to Dallas is a big adjustment. I will miss him being on the team. His experience and accomplishments rank up there with anyone in MLS. This last place team just got a litle worse and our overall coaching scenario / absences worries me.
I think a South American would be best. Just as CC has inroads into Euro players, we need a coach with inroads into the huge Latin market. The Burn need their next Colombian.
I think he will be a cinch someday but is he ready to stop playing? I think he will only consider that if he has a career ending injury. He could be a player coach but in reality he already is and they need another coach.
