    from mlsnet.com

March 6, 2003) - The soccer vision of both the Chicago Fire and Monarcas Morelia have a great deal in common especially with regard to the importance given to youth development, according to Morelia Director of Youth Development Andres Lillini. The Argentina native last week visited the Fire Academy as part of the working relationship between the two clubs - a first between an MLS and a Mexican club.

"I was positively surprised to see the potential of some of the kids at the Fire Academy," he said. "Morelia executives are treating this relationship [with the Fire] with great importance. The Federation has also shown its support."

Lillini, a former player with Newell's Old Boys, was a special guest of the Fire, supervising various practices last week at the Academy. As part of the agreement between the Fire and Monarcas, the teams will exchange youth players, coaches and ideas, as well as furthering their business opportunities in both countries. Fire players Jim Curtin, Henry Ring and Evan Whitfield recently traveled to Morelia in early February for training.

Can someone direct me to some basic info on Morelia? My club, Columbus Crew, plays them in the Champions Cup and I'd like to pass on whatever I can find out so we can get a feel for the team, fans, etc...

It can be in Spanish, I have no problem translating it. Thanks!

They are the 4th most offensive team in the league. They are also leader of their group.

Players to watch: Reinaldo Navia, Adolfo Bautista, Dario Franco, Saavedra, Palacios, Carlos Morales, Almiron, and Ismael Iniguez.

What i like about Morelia is that they never give up attacking, their counter attack is dangerous and very fast. They trashed the Wizards 7-1 in last years Champions Cup BTW.

Morelia is truly an attacking team. Not only do they play with three strikers (Navia, Bautista, Iniguez) but they also attack down the wings (Palacios, Damian) with their defenders (Saavedra) also joining the attack, team captain Dario Franco being particularly dangerous in corner kicks. That said Morelias priority is winning the Mexican League. So i am not sure if they will be sending their full squad for away games, which i believe they havent but they have been using their starters in home games.

The key for Columbus in winning this match up would be to get a good home result (at least by two goals) and play for the tie at Morelia. In last years Copa Libertadores Morelia had no problems pounding on their South American rivals (at Home) and TFC clubs will not be the exception as we can see by the Wizards result.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. I've only heard of one player (Bautista), but I'll be looking forward to a good result. Seeing as both are attack-oriented teams, could be a game of goals. Various, maybe you have an idea of whether or not they can hang with our tough defenders...

Im thinking the Crew can win the arial battle, especially with a player like McBride which im guessing will be marked by Dario Franco. Buddle could also be a problem in the air. Now im not sure how Navia, Bautista or Iniguez would messure up to the Crews defenders, if they are too physical this could benefit Morelia as we have seen MLS players constantly getting red carded in the TFC CC for "rough play" which is not sanctioned the same in MLS games. In any case if any of the above attackers are closely marked it can free up spaces for Palacios and Damian Alvarez which can be dangerous players and can also score goals. Should make for an interesting match up..

Isn't Morelia the team that the Chicago Fire is partnering with for marketing and training?

The Chicago Fire and Monarcas Morelia are indeed partnered up. They are allready working together with the youth squads sending their players to each others camps. I believe they will also play friendly match ups in the U.S and Mexico..

    2nd leg in Columbus

I hope this is the team Morelia plans on sending for the 2nd leg match in Columbus. They could work on match fitness in preperation for "Dallas Cup XXIV" while securing a ticket in the next round of TFC Champions Cup.

I'm having second thoughts about adopting an mls team after this. There are so many good teams to choose from in the americas.

exactly...why adopt an american team (if you can call them that) when you have the americas, europe and the rest of the world to choose from?

thater time.......what schisim meant to say is that AMERICA is a large continnet from patagonia, Argentina to alaska and canada....

If you mean an Usian team, is easy they only have 10 to choose from and hardly no tv coverage.

better for you to get foxsports and goltv.... watch 10 hrs daily and you will be ready to pick a real team!

welcome here! father......what bring you to this corner of forums?

Thank you for your kind welcome.
I'm on a personal quest to find an adoptive team.
I scouted the Pumas vs Penarol Libertadores game and I must confess I couldn't get up from my seat. The game was a joy to watch, and the crowd of fans were fantastic, they never stopped chanting through out the game. What a wonderful day of the sport we love.
