Those fun-loving anarchists have proposed a scavenger hunt for DC next week; break a McDonald's window, puncture a Police tire, etc. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...0921/ts_nm/economy_protests_game_dc&printer=1
Too bad too, because Washington is such a nice city to visit. I lived there for about two and a half months once, but for people who live there, that probably doesn't count. Besides, while there, I spent about 14 hours a day on Capitol Hill.
Oh, goodie, another thread related to anarchy...or is it anarchism? Somehow I think most of the people who show up for these "anarchist" protests don't really know or care to know the difference. I checked out the infoshop.org web site that was referenced in that Yahoo news story. There were all kinds of links to anti-Nazi protests, anti-globalization protests, anti-this, anti-that. Of course, my favorite is the anti-globalization protest. The whole idea of protesting a vague, poorly-defined concept like "globalization" always makes me laugh. Just what are they protesting? I once knew an anarchist who never went to protests because he was too busy doing constructive things like helping the homeless find shelter, helping alcholics and addicts kick the habit, etc. He never punctured the tires of police cars or kicked in McDonalds windows. I doubt he'll ever make the news and that's too bad because he'd probably have a thing or two to teach these kids who are busy sublimating their anger at their parents or whatever authority figure they harbor resentment against.
Here is another link the webpage of the organizers of the Anti-Capitalism Convergence: http://www.abolishthebank.org/en/scenario.html It explains their plans for the big day. I like the bit at the very end regarding what to do after they've blocked the intersections. They suggest street theatre where the protesters mimic an Israeli military checkpoint. Ummmm...I don't think that will go over quite swimmingly when they approach certain vehicles in DC. Besides, what do Israeli checkpoints have to do with anti-capitalism? They should learn the first rule of protesting: Don't blur your message. Murf
Re: Re: More "Fun With Anarchy" - A Scavenger Hunt? The public might have more sympathy for their cause if they did constructive things such as this instead of denouncing violence on one hand while breaking store windows and attacking police on the other. Alex
It's called 'biting off more than you can chew.' If fighting for a cause is good, imagine how much better fighting for 30 different causes at the same time is.
I think a lot of these anti-IMF/World Bank guys are anti-semetic/'Zionist'/Jewish - whatever you want to call it that least offends you - to some degree as well. After all, it makes sense, the Jews control all the money in the world, right? -Adam
Huh? No, a lot of people on the far left (and for the sake of argument let's lump these anarchists in with that crowd) are anti-Israel because Israel "oppresses the Palestinians" and because Israel receives military support from the US. I don't think anti-semitism motivates many anarchists.
Re: Re: Re: More "Fun With Anarchy" - A Scavenger Hunt? I'm sure they do. And if I could hold my breath as long as they can I'd go join them in their anarcho-syndicalist octopus garden.
Well, not in the traditional 'bigot' sense of the word, but a lot of the far left is so anti-Israeli I think it *does* begin to border on anti-Semitism. Which is why I connected it to the IMF meeting, i.e., the old stereotype about Jews and money. -Adam
Those guys (and several on here as well) would have a lot more defense against the Anti-Semitism charge if they just once noticed some of the OTHER "suffering" in the world. Human rights abuses are rampant, political prisoners, beatings, torture, intimidation and disappearances are endemic all over the globe, but these types only see the West Bank. Noticing China, for example, or Cuba or Rwanda would at least make them APPEAR to be even handed. But they AREN'T even handed, and they ARE anti-Semites.
