Mooza & Tets! ESC/Metro Away Match Party @ Nathan Hales 6pm Sat. (Mods please sticky)

Awwwright Lads and Lasses its time for Mooza Fries and Metro on the Big Screen! Come get some of both this Saturday, May 31st, 6PM @ Nathan Hale's Pub when Metro play away @ Cowlumbus. Our fave Publicans Carl and Richie will be there to pour us to victory with 3 dollar pints of Carlsberg and Tetley's. They will also be raffling choice seats for future matches.
Plus its a chance to work up some new chants, buy ESC gear, and ESC memberships and the bad ass new Guevara tee shirt. So don't sleep on it (especially YOU Brownie)!

*IMPORTANT NOTE* Please post here if you are MOS DEF going to attend on Saturday. If we don't get 20 strong replies there'll be no Mooza and Tets for you!

    Cheers,
    The Management

    Nathan Hale's Bar & Grill
6 Murray St, New York, NY 10007
    (212) 571-0776

    A,C to Chambers St.
    4,5,6, to Brooklyn Bridge
    N,R to City Hall

    GAMETIME: 7:30PM.
    Your attendance is an
important barometer of fan support and it allows the ESC to work with the
bar to get more drink deals and ensure a local soccer atmosphere for the
Metro fans to gather for away games. As Nathan Hale's is the official ESC
Pub, we'd really love to pack the joint.

I'll be there. I'll even take a nap before the match.
But gimme a break! The Big Screen was loaded with snow -- looked like a blizzard in Denver, which is not unusual.

Can't pass up $3 Tetley's! I'll make the big trip out from Jersey, and maybe even buy a ESC membership while I'm at it.

Are they open at 4pm? Of course, since it's 3am (been out consuming liquids and staring at women), now I'll probably crash until noon and then give them a call. If they're open, I'll try to get there for 4 or 4-30.

My review of the Nathan Hale's experience

    In one word: Lame

Not only was the turn out bad, but the people (a least int he area where I sat at the back with the big screen) were a bunch of ugly ass socially inept morons, who ignore people when asked a direct question.

Thanks for the invite and all, but seriously, if you invite people, specially with as small a group as was there, at least act like you want them to be there.

I think next time I decide to watch an away game at a pub I'll just go to the St. Mark's Ale house, where not will I have fun but I will be among people who actually want my business.

I agree, there is much room for improvement here. I was pumped when they brought the big screen TV in, but refused to watch it when I saw that it was snowing in Ohio. Got charged $4 for my first round(I know I should have said something to the barkeep).

Besides the reserved fan spirit, I still managed to have a good time. It's a bit of a hike from New Jersey, but I'll be coming back. Hopefully the atmosphere will get better as the season heats up.

Totally agree... I left at halftime and raced over to Nevada Smith's hoping for a better atmosphere...thankfully it paid off. Some of the so called fans at Nathan's were pure pricks...so much for unity for you home colours...shameful stuff really.

I have been to Nathan many times for both the National team and Metro. I'd rather watch it at home. I just don't care much about going. One day everybody is friendly, the next its like they don't even know you. I have been in the ESC for a few years now but still am not really part of the the club if you now what I mean. Most of the members are good people but they have already established their own cliques and their own ideas on things and this will not change. I am sure they did not mean to offend anyone on purpose but it is hard to recruit new members without at least making an effort to make people feel welcomed.

What specific examples do you people have that we were anti-social? Did any of you bother to strike up a conversation with people there?? What the hell did you expect??? everyone to rush around you to get the honor of meeting the newbies???

I think its good that these poeple are speaking out. Keeps everyone on their toes. I wasnt able to go to NH but Id like to know exactly what happened.

I myself dont neccessarily go around welcoming everyone, so I guess if I would have been there I wouldve been guilty too. Was it just that no one went up to talk to you or did people actually give you attitude? Cause if its the later it aint cool. If no one went up to talk to you maybe they thought you wanted to chill by yourself, you know how it is in NYC everyone keeps to themselves.

I did list one specific example. And no I don't expect people to fawn over me. I, however find it rude that when I asked people in a loud voice wether anyone sitting there knew wether Timmy would be playing at the next home game I was first stared at and then balatantly and rudely ignored. Need a more specific example.

You people act like you're in frigging high school and to tell you the truth that was the kind of attitude that made me wnat to run for the hills when I graduated.

I don't think it is too much to ask people to stop being so guarded and at least try to be a little social when an invitation has been sent to a group of people who don't all know each other. I thought the point of all these types of things was to get to know other Metro fans. Forgive me if I miscunstrued the situation but I have been in similar situations and never have I been faced with a more socially inadequate crowd than the one at Nathan Hale's.

This is all well and good. I've had many of the same thoughts at different times, myself. I think many of the people there - including the people who are said to form 'cliques', probably have thought and perhaps still do think the same way.

But what is there to do about it? Everyone seems to have different ideas about what a 'supporters club' should be, how it should be organized and run, ways in which it could draw more people in, but when it comes right down to it no one seems to want to speak up with ideas, much less do anything about it. I've tried (I'm certainly not the only one) - but we're still at an impasse. So if you think you know a better way, please speak up.

The people who showed up at Nathan Hale's shouldn't be derided - at least they showed up (I'm speaking as someone who didn't, and hasn't lately, because 2 hours is a hell of a trip to come there and find 8 other people there.) I don't know what was or wasn't said beyond that.

If you moved to City X in whatever country, and went out to a local bar or pub to watch the city team play, would you expect everyone to jump up and roll the welcome wagon up to your table 10 minutes after you arrived? You'd hope people would be civil to you - though that's by no means a given, depending on where you are. Maybe you'd get to know someone, maybe you wouldn't. Maybe you'd go there and sup your beer quietly once, twice, ten times before you even got to talking to someone.

That's just the way it happens. Some people are there to be sociable and yakk it up with other supporters, some have their friends or whoever else there and aren't all that concerned with meeting you, and some just want to sit there and watch the game and be left alone. The biggest problem, as you've already stated, is that turnout is pretty low - though to be honest, a May game against Columbus on a Saturday afternoon is not exactly going to be the biggest draw of all time.

Better to be talking about these things on the level instead of slanging insults back and forth - though I'm not exactly sure Bigsoccer is the place.

    Like Serg said, it's NY.
As I said above, some people are going to be outgoing, and some simply aren't. I've been going out to things at NH's for years, have been involved in a lot of things with the ESC, and there are STILL people I see every single time out, and I have no freaking clue who they are. My fault? Their fault? Who knows. It can be a little awkward when you see someone new there; do they want to be bothered? Should I just let them be?
Is this a supporters club? A social club? A social supporters club?

Once again - people ought to speak up about what they want it to be.

Not for nothing, but the best way to meet people in the ESC - a good number of whom are not only true supporters, but more than adequate, socially - is to go on a road trip. It may sound like hell if you just regarded Saturday as a waste of time - that's your right - but it's where I got to know a few good people, speaking for myself.

I agree. This issue may be better served on the ESC Yahoo group rather than here. Don't want any DC Fcuktards trolling this conversation.

"...in a loud voice"?! I was there too, in the back, sitting by myself, and I heard you ask the question (barely), and the person sitting next to you say, "no one knows". You weren't loud at all. I didnt answer you because, 1-I didnt know the answer, and 2-I didnt want to talk with anyone. But being mad at people because you whisper something and they dont respond is silly, no? If you wanted to make friends, why were you sitting at a seperate table from them in the first place? Why didnt you ever go over and say "Hey, Im blah blah, good to meet you. You guys ESC? Mind if I/we join you...?" But youre mad they didnt do the same? Whos childish again? Sounds high school being afraid to approach a group of people and introduce yourself.

edit:Those $6 pints of Sam were crazy though. Yikes. I don't think I can afford that place.
