We have technology that will tell us exactly where every play is on the field at any given moment. There is technology that can track the ball, goal line, etc. Really, they could almost completely remove the human element from officiating except for maybe calling fouls, but then you’d have even more people throwing a fit about “destroying tradition” or something. Personally, I like the idea of VAR, it’s that human element that gets to decide what to look at and what not where the problem lies.
I agree, in my opinion unless it is a decision that is not down to subjectivity and can objectively be ruled by an automated system it should not be part of VARs purview. If we "must" bring stuff in that a human needs to review then they should not be able to look at it in slow motion (for red cards especially), and it should be subject to a timer. If something clear and obvious takes longer than 2 mins to figure out then it isn't clear and obvious
Concur. I hate the long time periods it sometimes takes in all sports for "review". It's supposed to correct "clear and obvious" errors. If you cant figure it out that fast, it's not clear and obvious. Heck, if we'd had VAR in 1966, they'd still be trying to figure out that disputed goal.
How many times do we have to go over this? If goals truly are offside, they shouldn’t be given. But we’ve seen plenty of times where the flag has gone up and the VAR AWARDED the goal as well. Not to mention the number of penalties that have been called that never would have previously. I will agree that the second disallowed goal was close enough that I’m a little surprised at how quickly the check happened, but you also have to consider that they’re rewinding tape and checking things long before we even begin to see replays. It actually wouldn’t surprise me if an assistant VAR is rewinding the feed before the goal is even scored while the main VAR watches the live feed. And that was a correct call, confirmed quickly. Which you’re demanding out of one side of your mouth and complaining about with the other.
For transparency maybe they could show the freeze frame at the next stop in play that led to the decision of offside
Are they still using "tape"?? I'm guessing there's no rewind to it--just point and click at the right time hack.
There hasn’t been tape used in at least 15 years. One network used to roll an archive on tape, but that was mostly gone by 2010.
Genuine question - is it the rule that once the flag goes up then the play is "dead" and anything that happens after cannot be reviewed? Similar to NFL where once a whistle blows the play is dead...so if the AR raises the flag then the defense can just stop playing? That would make sense why we do not see many "in the moment" offside calls so it would allow the play to develop and be corrected by VAR.
Linesman can raise his flag, and the ref can ignore it. If the ref doesn't whistle the play dead, then it's not dead. Play to the whistle, as they say.
Thanks! I think I knew at some point but something more important probably took it's place in my brain. Play to the whistle still holds true!
You forgot the vital role of the defenders who have just been run past due to ball watching, ie jumping up and down and screaming at the ref while frantically pointing at the linesman.
Aidan is living here until he has to report back to Boro. I've seen him popping in and out of bars in the Short North flanked by an entourage of aspiring WAGs.
