Monterrey will open on December 14 against Al Sadd of Qatar who are the host or OFC champion Hienghene Sport from New Caledonia. A country cannot have two clubs, so if Al Sadd when the AFC Champions League, they will start in Round 2, and the AFC Champions League runner-up will take the host spot and play in Round 1. Al Sadd reached the AFC Champions League Semifinals, and the remaining clubs are from China, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. Since the winner of the all-Saudi Arabian Quarterfinal will play Al Sadd in the Semifinal that is the Final of the West Region, a Saudi Arabian club cannot finish second to Al Sadd, and therefore they must win to qualify. The Chinese and Japanese clubs will qualify before the Final if they win the East Region Final and Al Sadd wins the West Region Final, but the Final will still determine which club starts in what round. If Monterrey reaches the Semifinals, they will play Liverpool.
