I might have been hallucinating, but did I just hear Al Michaels read a promo for MLS Cup during the Niners-Seahawks Monday night football broadcast on ABC? I only caught the end of it. Wow.
ya i saw the whole thing, it was cool...michaels actually pronounced everything good, etc...hes a classy guy...
same here. niners won, too. what a great night. my roommate was trying to talk to me during the MLS Cup promo, so i had to feign interest in what he was saying, so i sadly didn't catch all of what al was saying. i was really hoping John was gonna chime in with one of his patented "Maddenisms".
YES THEY DID THEY HAD COBI JONES ON IN AND INTERVIEWED HIM.. TALKED ABOUT WORLD CUP, UCLA, MLS FINAL, AND HOW SOCCER IS DOING WITH SO MANY OTHER SPORTS TEAMS IN LA.. COBI REALLY APPRECIATED BIG ATTENDANCE LAST FEW GAMES...so lets carry it over next season.. GO GALAXY!
Right after the promo Michaels said "Back to the other football." Nice of him not to say "real football". I think I remember in one of Madden's books that he said something that while he's not a true soccer fan and doesn't really have alot of knowledge of the game, he was really taken in by the Brazilians with not only their fans, but also their style of play.
I know it would never happen, but I'd like it if we could get Michaels to call the ABC matches. I've thought the same thing about hockey since ABC started carrying the NHL. He called the greatest hockey game of all time, so it seems like a no-brainer. And as someone who's called hockey, it shouldn't be such an extension to get into soccer. I say that with full understanding of Jack Edwards. Call me nuts, but I've got Soccer Bowl '77 on tape (thanks BigSoccer Store) and Jon Miller called a pretty decent match.
oh man can you imagine Brent Musberger as the announcer? "Folks keep an eye on #7, they call him Run DMB because this kid can fly!" I still remember him doing a few Texas games and calling Major Appelwhite "The Major" for an entire game. Or the call Ricky WIlliams... "Ricky cuts back into the history books..." and then pair him with Keith Jackson. That'd be awsome
When was the Cobi interview? Was it at the half or did they talk to him during the run of play? How many times did they run the promo? Did they run the commercial too?
Inasmuch as I too would love to see Musburger call some soccer (remember, he did host the studio show for France '98 and correctly picked the hosts to beat Brazil for the right reasons), I'll take JP on Sunday with Keough and be satisfied. It's high time, IMHO. Hopefully, he got his contract restructured so he can now be 'the voice'.
I didn't see the Cobi thing. The ABC promo was in the 3rd quarter, between plays I believe. Short but sweet. I did not see the MLS commercial either.
This would fit right in with Bob Costas talking about the 'golden toe of Zinedine Zidane' among the worst lines about soccer of all time. I feel like I'm the one-man truth squad on this, but Beasley isn't fast. He's quick, but he's not fast. In a sprint, he'll get beat by most anyone. Great player in every other way. I'm very glad that he himself has learned to use his skill, quickness and vision and stop trying to run by everyone. I don't understand how the misunderstanding keeps perpetuating itself among fans, though.
I agree. In Championship Manager terms, he'd get 20 for acceleration and agility (or whatever reflects the ability to change direction), but a 12 or so for pace.
The cobi thing was after the game on a local LA show they do after the game every week called monday night live.
ABC 7 here in LA do a show from the ESPN think in Downtown Disney. They have Bob Golic and some other dork on there usually. One of the basebore players was interviewed first (long interview) then Cobi came out. Rob Fugsacki (butched his last name) interviewedd Cobi with what I'm assuming were scripted questions. He did give the G's and the sport some respect though. Mostly comments from Rob about how well attendance has been (guess he read the recent MLS press releases) Still, better than nothing I guess.
I'd like to respectfully disagree with this. One of DMB's favorite moves is when he has the ball facing a player, he'll kick the ball past the player on one side (curling inwards) and then run the other direction past the defender. I played football in high school and I know acceleration and speed when I see it. On that move you see great speed and accelaration. Against Holland one of the things we would do is boot the ball up field and let DaMarcus run onto it. He'd just blaze past defenders on the run. I was there in person and could tell how fast he was.
Excellent I saw the whole promo and almost fell out of my chair. It was very well produced, of course, with video of Ruis and Twellman, I think, scoring goals, while Michaels was reading the copy, very upbeat, it was incredible! Then he says, well, back to the 'other football'--very classy and it showed, to me, how far we have come !
Not no more, dude. It was one of his favorite moves in 01. He got smoked by MLS defender after MLS defender. It would happen twice a game. I was a season ticket holder. All sorts of troglodytes proved they were faster. It was actually embarrassing. By mid-season, I could see it coming and would start to cringe as the ball went forward. These days, he may occasionally do it if he knows the defender is a true club foot. But for the most part, he's erased that move from his repertory. You may want to adjust your mental radar-gun by a half a notch.
Exactly right. (I assume that 20 is the max.) He's the most agile player I've ever had the chance to watch regularly. I used to play on a team with an NCAA rookie of the year. He looked overweight, and was always one of the last to cross the lines in sprints. But over 5 yards, no one was faster. In 5 v. 2 games, he'd pull the back from defenders who were all-America candidates, toying with them, and say in his Scottish accent 'too slae.' (Meaning too slow, for the accent-impaired.) I'd rather have quickness than speed.
Anybody (thinking specifically of Richard Fidler and a few others here) have equipment to post a clip of the 'ad' on the web?
considering you watched him a bunch more times than I did I believe you. Surprising though. Maybe i view soccer too much like football, where it is all short range bursting.
