I suppose most of us have come to accept the olympics as the men's U-23 world cup. Fine. But why are the women playing their full national sides at the olympics. Does this not diminish the WWC? To me it's dumb.
I'm getting so sick of this whole friendlies are meaningless thing. It's not meaningless for MLS teams that get to face some of the best teams in the world, or MLS players in what is likely their only chance to test themselves against those teams and players. It's not even meaningless for the European teams, who are working in their new players and preparing for the season. At the national team level friendlies are even less meaningless given how little time those teams get to train and play together and that they're constantly trying out new players to see what they can do at that level. When those sorts of phrases are inserted into every other sentence in a country that is so sports obsessed that fans are forced to buy tickets to NFL preseason games, SportsCenter makes a big deal out of it every time some dude dunks on another dude (for 1/100 of the points scored in that game) in some Las Vegas gymnasium, and entire sports columns are written about Jeter adjusting his junk during a spring training at bat, it's hard to see it as anything but more anti-soccer nonsense.
