Very nicely played by Monaco. It looked bad for them when Madrid scored the first goal, but Monaco kept fighting and came out big. Nice two goals by Giuly and a nice goal by Morientes. Next up is Chelsea!

    Some post-match comments:

"My players are writing a memorable page in football history for Monaco, and for the whole of French football,"

"It's a deserved victory for us after our performance tonight, and just shows that anything can happen in football, and that you have to have faith all the way to the end" said Deschamps.

"The best team won tonight," said Zidane. "We're all gutted.

"What made the difference was conceding a goal right on the stroke of half time. Their victory is deserved, and you have to congratulate Monaco.

"I had a similar experience with Bordeaux against Milan, now I'm on the other side.

"We just have to accept that Monaco were a much better team than us tonight'

I cant believe they only conceded 1 goal in that game. So I guess all these johnny come lately rich super clubs with unlimited budgets are gonna come and try to steal Giuly now because he was one of the guys who was probably gonna stay but after his performance today they'll be coming for him. His value may be higher than Rothen's right now.

Anything that keeps the Ligue 1 leaders in Europe, and thus with more matches, making the domestic schedule more difficult, and making it easier for PSG to catch up.

Now let's hope Lyon can keep it up as well!

Real Madrid "fans" are trash. I gotta look at some guy in the RM forum saying we won't lose to a team like Monaco next year. You just got your @$$ beat why dont you give your opponent some credit. Bunch of high and mighty snobs. How could someone be a Real Madrid fan anyway I dont get it.

maybe real Madrid will learn that a team is made with offensive players AND defensive players, this team is just a stupid construction, plus this team is physically "dead", maybe next year they will preparing the team in the begining of the seaaon intead of doing a showtime presentation in Asia...

    LOL

well done Monaco, I thing they can go in the final, Chelsea is not so good, and french teams often succeed against english ones...
and it's very good for reputation of french league

See my remarks in this week's Ligue 1 thread.
Galacticos were scored on twice at home. Can't do that during these stages of C1. Teams are too good to not pay the consequences.

Giuly has been looked at for quite some time by several clubs as have many of the players at Monaco including their manager Didier Deschamps. I'm more amazed they were able to keep a number of them during the season. The beauty of the result lies in the fact that a good manager with a good team can go very far. It's what footy is all about.

I also see Lyon playing the match of their lives tonight and beating Porto. These two match up very well but Porto has to play in Lyon and that's not an easy place to win.

Porto was just too good for them. I refused to believe Porto is a better team than Lyon but the fact is it is indeed true. The only people happy at this result in France are St. Etienne fans.

Monaco beating Madrid has to be one of the greatest moments in CL history! I watched the game last night. The second half was one of the most entertaining football experiences of my life..

Indeed, Monaco made Madird look old, tired, and sans defense...which is what they actually were.

I love all the stories involved in this round of the ucl. From Ranieri's team finally beating Arsenal to Morientes beating the team that loaned him out. All 4 teams left have legitimate chances at lifting the cup, so refreshing.

Deschamps stock is seriously rising with his team's performance. I wonder how long before the team and the coach will stay together.

I agree. This is one of the best CL's I've witnessed. I'm pulling for Monaco to take it all. I've always been a fan of Deschamps. Guy is total class. I'd love to see him replace Lippi at Juve someday, but for now it would be interesting to see how Monaco shapes up if they don't get raided in the off season..

  24. Monaco has tax advantages compared to the other French clubs.
    More easy to beat Real-Madrid.
