This type of commentary about the child who plays Lily is tiresome and increasingly untrue. And your version is so overly dramatic. Sorry to be this blunt, but it had to be said. Now back to normal business... "Oh my god! It looks like a Madonna video in here!"
I didn't say the child who plays Lily. I said Lily. Really young child characters in sitcoms usually suck, and she is no exception. No slight on the child herself. I reckon last night's closing scene is the first one where Lily has been genuinely funny.
Yes, I've been pretty vocal against new Lily here, but I agree with Caesar and Belgian guy 100% this time. There is only so much new Lily can do. Even when not necessarily intended, her character came off as evil. Now the show is going with it to help her out. His post was before the last show where she did a great job. She is improving because she is getting older and because they are making scenes for her.
I don't get this "evil" thing everyone is talking about. From Wednesday's scene, you have a small child and nutbag Sal, who used to talk about "killing the baby" and cheated on her fiancee an hour before the wedding - certainly seems to me she is the evil one of the two and Lily's attitude toward her is perfectly warranted. Plus, she's had to deal with Cam forcing her into hours of those photo shoots, Luke's earlier animosity and other such annoyances.
It was 4 in the morning and a poor word choice. Frankly, I don't even remember posting. I thought she did a great job especially with that final scene. Perhaps calling her a pushy and spoiled bully might be a better way of describing her. //I don't want to call a child's character bitchy again after saying it's wrong to call a 9-year old a ********...
You were not the first one to use that description. But again, I certainly would not consider her a pushy and spoiled bully for that scene with Sal... more like the only shrewd judge of character in the household.
I hope the people criticizing a child actress know how ridiculous they sound. And its the same people in other threads being cynical critics for some damn reason. Why keep bitching about it? Just stop watching the show and move on.
Plus, she has been very funny. I honestly can't think of a scene where she has been in that I don't like. I must be watching a different show than some of these other posters.
You realise this criticism is directed at the character rather than the actress, right? I don't know anyone who's complained about her acting being poor, and I'm pretty sure she's not scripting her own scenes/dialogue. The main problem is that very young characters don't give writers a lot of scope for comedy outside of "kids say the darndest things", so the rest of their screen presence is usually filled with saccharine sweet cuteness. Credit to the writers for trying to go in a different direction with Lily, but it still doesn't work that great. The character is whiny, bitchy and spoiled. Unless it's directed at a character we already don't have much reason to like (e.g. Sal) then it's pretty annoying and not particularly funny. Don't suppose you also watch 2.5 Men?
I don't have a problem with the way the character is written. The issue I have/had was the forced way in which she delivered her lines. But I guess you really need to luck out to find an actress that young who can play it completely naturally. She isn't helped by the fact that the rest of the child actors on the show are all terrific. But as I said, she is getting better.
Here's the thing, though... Lily IS spoiled. A spoiled child is the product of a spoiling parent, of which Lily has at least one. To me, that aspect makes natural sense. And it seems all kids can be whiny. And as for your earlier mention of Cam and Mitch, their behavior sorta serves a purpose in the overall story as it relates to Jay's uncomfortableness/growth regarding his gay son.
All of which may be true, but none of it is particularly funny. The Cam/Mitch thing irks me because they used to be a couple of really funny characters whose humour often transcended their stereotypes. The more the show has gone on, the more the writers seem to have resorted to cliches for gags.
Seems to me those two characters 1) have always been a mix of cliche gags and stereotype breaks & 2) provide plenty of laughs, then and now.
I still think one of the funniest jokes ever on the show was how much Luke hated Lilly. "But we can all agree she's a terrible person, right?" They seemed to have dropped that, but it was pretty funny.
IMO, the show has been really strong the last few episodes. Last night was terrific. The interaction between Phil and his dad was touching.
I'm always dropping eleventies on customers when giving them technical talks just to see if they catch it. They never do.
