Big Boom The acronym is MOAB or "Massive Ordinance Air Blast" or, as nicknamed by soldiers, "Mother of all Bombs." The big brother of the "Daisy Cutter" used in the campiagn in Afghanistan will be tested at a spralling miliatry ordinance testing field in the panhandle of Florida sometime between 12pm and 5pm today. Should be interesting.

The testing of murder-tools? Sobering, horrifying maybe...not interesting.

Of course you need to test them. What, you want to be out murdering somewhere when your murder weapon malfunctions? Talk about a bummer.

The MOAB should be banned. It's like a nuke without radiation.

Nukes with radiation aren't banned, why would a nuke without radiation be?

I really don't see how being instantly crushed under atmospheric overpressure is any worse than getting shrapnel in your brain from a 155mm shell or getting a couple 5.56 rounds from a Marine's M-4 in your chest. Killing is killing.

Besides, such weapons are more often used to blast holes through minefields.

War rules are just plain silly.

Whoever can make the bombs that kill the most troops (or convince the other side that they will kill the most troops) wins the war.

Who cares how it's done? IT'S WAR!

it's going to be used like the daisy cutter. the logistics of this bomb makes it only avaliable for certain situations. you can't lug a C-130 into a "hot" combat situation every time. and it's certainly no "close combat support bomb"

The biggest bomb ever used was the 22,000lb "Grand Slam" by the British in World War II.

"Daisy Cutters" were used in Vietnam to help clear landing sites for helicopters. It was also useful in clearing large enemy formations.

This one would be similar to the "Grand Slam" as an "Earthquake Bomb".

The likely way of delivery would be in a B-52.

It is a psychological and effects weapon .. it is designed to go after deeply buried targets - our adversaries are taking their WMD facilities deep underground to avoid detection - this is an attempt to get at them. The publicity is meant for psychological purposes. The magic question will be - are Saddam's palaces assessed to be WMD facilities? - if so - then I suspect his palaces will be eliminated off the face of the earth - along with remote cave complexes.

From a war conventions standpoint - MOAB does not spread virus or toxins or radiation so it is a conventional weapon - albeit a very big one.

Before you get all bent out of shape - consider the weapons used in the fire bombing of Dresden .... frankly to me this is much more humane than "napalm in the morning".

By psychological effects, do you mean to create terror?

Oh sh!t. It's all clear now. We will be engaging in terrorism. Why didn't I see it before? There must be some way we can defeat Saddam's military without scaring them... maybe smaller, quieter bombs...

Making them crap their uniforms and surrender might be a little less terrifying than killing them all into submission.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not making judgements, I just like to hear the same people talk about how they're eager to go to war for the benefit of the Iraqui people, then turn around and cream their pants when they hear about a new weapon. Keep 'em coming. How about that new landmind that can tear off the legs of a 10 year old at 50 yards? That thing rocks!
