The Soccer Show on 590 (May 10th broadcast) had an interview with Mo where he said that getting a DP for Toronto possibly this summer is a reality. The fan reaction (i.e. support) to the team has driven the possibility of signing a DP further up the priority list.

So, since I have no clue as to who would be a worthy signing for a DP slot, does anyone have ideas? I guess that a DP would almost always be an attacking player (since goals = sexy!) :)

Any thoughts on who TFC should try to pursue?

    Cheers!

Radzinski sounds like a good bet here.

I say try and get Figo. He's still usually the best player on the field for Inter, he's excellent from set pieces and he could give TFC some very badly needed width. Sure he doesn't have the wheels anymore but that can be compensated by playing him in from of Wynn on the flank. Plus he can come into the middle and play behind the two strikers.

he'll probalby bet another washed up UK-league player...which we dont need right now....as far as Xavier.......if he steps foot on the BMO field it better be just because hes a member of the media...hes garbage...always was always will be..

Radz wouldnt be moronic....Figo would be interesting as he'd probably go the 90mins here considering Seria A and MLS are no comparison.

we need an attacking player, if you really wanna get brave...

try to sign young players on loan....or grab mid-aged players who've been forgotten (i.e cassano-type player)

anybody from the UK would be a joke...but tahts whats gunna happen.....

Radz makes the most sense and shouldn't be impossible to get.

He has still has quite a bit left in the tank. I've seen him play behind the front striker at Fulham and on either wing.

I think Figo is a pipe dream.

Once MLS creates the Donovan Rule (Domestic DP slot) then we can get Radz and Fowler. :D

Stop mentioning Figo. He has already signed up to play with a Saudi Arabian club.

couldn't Radz play RM/RW and push O'Brien to CAM?

    Didn't O'Brien state a preference for CM?

I'd like some proof Mo knows what he's doing before we let him use the DP slot. The amount of money we are paying some guys on this team (while it isn't much) we could be signing better talent.

I'm on the fence as to what we should eventually do with the DP. The personal side of me says "Go get Del Piero" who was my favorite player growing up. Much of this is along the same lines as getting a Fowler or a Figo. It's just going to polarize the club.

The first problem I have with all those signings is (as much as they would all be great players in MLS) is that it sends the wrong message. MLS shouldn't simply be a retirement ground for past prime European players. The second problem is that signing any one of those big names is going to be divisive. If I we sign Del Piero I'll be happy but someone else will just think we're pandering to Italians. If we sign Fowler there will be some happy people but others will just think "screw this, I’m not a Liverpool fan".

My opinion is you’d be better off taking a guy from South America who won’t sell tickets with his name but will be extremely skilled. There is tons of talent there that can’t necessarily get to Europe because of restrictions on non-European players. Plus, it’s comparatively cheaper than going to Europe to sign talent. Also, if the guy pans out really well, we can sell him and still be further ahead (not that we should count on that).

Man, you've got it pegged! Mo is rapidly going down as the worst judge of talent in MLS history, not just because of overpayment and screwups with TFC, but especially for all the idiotic mistakes he made in NY.

I just wonder how quick your ownership is to pull the trigger. Your team is destined for mediocrity until they send Mo packing, unfortunately. I liked him as a player, but I am convinced he can't coach.

If you guys end up looking for a guy that can get the most out of a team, give Dave Dir a call. He's not flashy, but his teams entertain and are competitive.

That's exactly the reason. A "star" from the EPL is too much for TFC, so any attainable player from EPL is going to be a washed up also-ran.

btw: I thought I heard Michael Owen wanted out of Newcastle...

the whole reason for the dp spot is to land someone who is attainable no matter what the cost (within reason) someone who will guarantee selling tickets and someone who in the end will benifit the team and hopefully put some balls in the net. so guys like robbie fowler, radzinski or even better would come over. they wouldn't use the dp spot for anything less... there's no reason. dichio only makes $150k and for what he provides, it's money worth spent! someof the other guys i would disagree but in his case, it's different.

ENGLISH TALENT IS A JOKE!!!!!!!!!! read some of my other posts...Rafa and Mourinho dont coach the english-style of game neither does Sir Alex with is guys flying down the flanks....the english game is direct....to the point football...astonishingly boring....hence....why they have done absolutely nothing in the major tourneys!!!

most of the talent TFC can grab play for english coaches who coach the english style....hence DICHIO!

i can go on forever.....i'll be posting pics of Canada-Argentina a little later on.

EXACTLY!!! Just like the Netherlands and Spain!!

Here's the deal with a DP. Buy the story, not just talent. Lets say you spend 2 million on some hyper-talented 28 Year Old Uruguayan to come to MLS. Well that's terrific - they're not over the hill and looking for a retirement package. But guess what? They hate the weather in Toronto, the league isn't up to their expectations, nobody is around to speak spanish to and that's it.

Spend the money, get Radzinski. Do whatever it takes. Make him the founding legend of your club. He can be the Cobi Jones of Toronto. In 4 years, he retires, and becomes coach.

firstly, holland doesn't compare to the epl at all! spain is good but honestly still isn't on par with the epl. secondly, there would never be a uruguayan star signed to a dp slot in toronto - it will never happen! the fans would have mo's head! if it was a dp player it would have to be someone big from serie a, epl, spl or la liga. i really doubt it would be anyone out of this calibre...

sorry bud! you're a joke! tell me who teh top 4 teams were in the champions league? uh huh... i thought so... 1 serie a team and 3 epl teams... so liverpool, chelsea and man u all play this style? and it's not english? okay - whatever bud! what ebgland needs is a better manager. sven was good but mclaren doesn't cut it. they have tons of talent. they are more cursed then anything... it's the european and south american teams taht dive all over the field, break players feet and make nasty tackles that ruin it for england! england is way too proud to play thsi style of game. look at when owen went down in teh world cup, he rolled himself off the pitch... you tell me which other team in the world would have a player like this? none! because they're all about posturing and drawing fouls, creating dives and taking cheap shots whenever they can. england have deserved far better in the last euro and last year's world cup.

have you ever watched a serie a game??? talk about boring... do you know your soccer bud? i think you've got it backwards! english football is by far much more exciting to watch then most leagues and without the diving and cheap shots. by far much more superior then most!

but thsi thread is about a dp. who would you recomend tfc get? rivaldo from olympiakos? the biggest faker/diver in the world? i mean, he's at the end of his career, he can pu the ball in the net and he could draw a penalty right? never! that guy can stay in greece! i would never want a player like that on our team and if they did sign someone like this, i wouldn't support them. we are canadians! we are proud, don't go down with every touch and that's the way it is. so if you don't like it, don't watch!

did you see argentina last night? what a joke, with the way they were falling, i was expecting a few broken legs. disgusting!

Not to poop on anyone’s parade but:
    1. I think some people are confusing “English Style Football” with something it is not. In some ways many of the top teams are playing English style football. The pace for all the Teams in the EPL is very fast, they all tackle tough, and play physical. In that sense they are playing English style football. What is NOT English at all is the way many of these teams play when they have the ball. English style football is a very direct attacking style with very little passing or build-up. That is not a way you would descibe a lot of the top teams in the EPL. The teams that are playing more Classic English style with the ball are lower in the table.

    2. I think it’s foolish to declare the EPL the best league and crap on everyone else. This year they did have the most high quality sides but things change. Not that long ago Inter, Juve, and AC Milan were three of the four sides in the Champions league final. No league is going to remain dominant forever., although with the TV deal and resources behind the EPL now they seem to be distancing themselves a bit from the pack.
