Hopefully the league will do better about selling players for profit. Mathis was a free transfer and shouldn't have been. Them doing well over there helps in that it should bring more scouts to the states and raise player values. Once the Americans going abroad can prove their worth, MLS will prosper.

Bonji you are mistaken when you say Mathis should have gotten MLS a transfer fee. MLS had several offers shortly after the WC but nothing materialized from it. Then with Clints off year last season no team was willing to pay a transfer fee for him. Mathis explicitly did not sign an extension with the league because he wanted to go to europe. MLS is not going to sell players for peanuts and if a player is determined to go overseas you can't make him sign a contract.

MLS was asking too much or getting to greedy after the WC. They thought, "let's keep these guys home and get people to come through the gates." I think they realize more now that transfer money is more valuable than hoping for people to come through the gates. If there was ever a bid for Mathis from Bayern Munich they should have talken it.
