Anyone saw this past week's MLS Wrap? What kind of pathetic comment was Sean making about the great refs in the world? He mentioned Hugh Dallas as being one of the greatest ever. That was just plain pathetic.

yeah, i saw that and almost spit out my drink. he said something like "referees like collina and hugh dallas are great because you never notice them during a game." unreal. nice historical awareness, sean.

That's one of the few times I would ever bash any type of show about MLS.

I hope this isn't about that one call in that one match. Besides the stupidity of judging a referee based on a single call out of thousands that he has made throughout his career, it was a judgement call. You can look it up in the rule book or read this. It was a well called game. It wasn't the first time there was a controversial call, and certainly not the first time a team that controlled a match ended up losing.

    Get a grip.

That comment was completely outrageous...not trying to be snobby, but he obviously couldn't think of another international ref other than Collina.

And is there really anyone else you can put in Collina's league?

Yeah, but I heard that and thought it was a really naive comment - the words of someone who thinks throwing out the names of a couple high profile referees equals knowledge of the subject. It's shallow.

My understanding of Collina's reputation among Serie A followers is that he's far from a perfect ref; in fact, that he's known for trying to make his presence on the field as big a deal as the presence of the other 22 men - the ones who are actually contesting the game. Perhaps someone from the Italy board or the referee board would be able to elaborate on this, but in effect, Collina is said by some to work at making himself bigger than the game (his 'look' definitely helps accomplish this for him on the public front - just as David Elleray's Eton-schoolmaster persona individualized him, and somehow seemed to get some people thinking he was the be-all and end-all of English refs.)
Which is pretty much the opposite of the point whoever spoke was trying to make.

Poor consolation for Solano who was Red-Carded and a penalty awarded for stopping a free kick inadvertantly with his arm a few years ago for Newcastle. No matter how it happens, you handle the ball on the line, you should be tossed. End of story.

    Thx,

    Jay!

Moving a thread kills it. I guess you can't criticize Hugh Dallas on Big Soccer.
    One call?????? How about:
    1. Shaving 80 seconds off extra time while Germany was on life support?
    2. The outrageous dive that led to the free kick where Germany scored its only goal?
    3. The three yellow cards, two for delay in forming the wall? Is that a routine call? Of course not.
    4. Calling a corner kick after the handball that saved the goal?
    5. His mocking and insulting behavior towards the Americans while smiling at Kahn?
Beckenbauer and Pele said the game was an outrage.
In my opinion, that game was rigged. Shortly after the game I visited an English discussion group. Every single one thought that the game was rigged and they were ashamed, as UK citizens, that Dallas was from their nation.
But then, the English undertand football.
    Just my opinions.

    Clearly.

Edit: Oh, what the hell, I'll humor you.
    1. Don't remember this, have to go back to tape.
    2. Like you said, your opinion. Just that.
    3. So making non-routine calls makes you a bad ref.
    4. See my previous post. Did the ball play the hand or did the hand play the ball? Dallas thought the latter, judgement call.
The Law clear states, "If the ball strikes the defender accidentally, no offense is committed." If he thought there was no foul, what's wrong with a corner? Next.
    5. You are quite the comedian, Mr Flannigan. I think your dry sense of humor goes unappreciated on these boards.
Beckenbauer and Pele say a lot of things. Not that what they say is necessarily wrong, but if you read enough soccer news, you learn to take everything they say, especially Pele, with a grain of salt.
Yes, your opinion. We all know how much opinions are worth.
Engllish discussion group? There's your problem. I assume you didn't go to a Scottish discussion group.
And perhaps you're forgetting tha USA played Germany that day? England and Germany aren't exactly Ben and J.Lo of international soccer.

And you of all people should know better than to take discussion groups as a reflection of the real world. They can be more inane than Pele or Der Kaiser.
You haven't met too many ManU fans, I gather.

Look, I understand your frustration, but when you have watched enough soccer as I have, it doesn't come as a shock when the more deserving team doesn't win a game, with or without help from the official. Germany scored a goal, US didn't, thus, Germans were the victors. That's life.

Nah, it also included historical favoritism in the Old Firm matches, at least according to one side's supporters.

In any case, having seen Dallas call a number of games, I cannot in any way believe that he "doesn't make himself noticed." It's exactly the opposite, with dramatic finger waving and pointing and showmanship.

You know, I haven't seen enough Dallas-officiated matches to make an opinion either way. But it is true that a lot of anti-Dallas sentiment in the US is based on that one play, or that one game. Though such isn't the case for you, obviously.
And as Michael K notes, Collina doesn't exactly fit the mold of the ref who "doesn't make himself noticed" either.

Not trying to defend Collina or Dallas against criticism. Just inane criticism.

    Flannigan,

I dont know what English discussion group you were talking to but any Englishman "wouldnt give a monkeys" about the actions of a Scottish referee..if anything they would be laughing so I dont buy into your comment.....

Hugh Dallas is overall a good ref... Collina is definitely the best... i watch him in the Serie A all the time and in Europe... every ref has his bad days and bad judgement calls... example 1) Kim Nielson... good ref... one bad call.. sent off Beckham for a stupid lunge in France... should have been a yellow at best... still haunts the guy... overall decent ref... seen many Champions League games with him and he seemed invisible....

The UEFA refs are held to a very high standard and if they constantly make errors they are removed from FIFA's list.

The point is Sean should be smart enough to realize not to use Hugh Dallas as an example in front of American soccer fans.
