1822763349031141542 is not a valid tweet id I hope that isn't true. In the words of Twellman, "What are we doing?" Why would MLS want to destroy (yes, destroy) the women's game now? We are about to enter a soccer war between NWSL and USL and now MLS plans to enter too? All these leagues won't help them grow. Why is the soccer landscape in the US always have to be under constant "war"? I'm not a ProRelite but it's time USSF steps up and just set ups a soccer pyramid with ProRel so all these future leagues that try to pop up and put others out of business just stop. Which ultimately helps no one at the end. And also if MLS wants to spend money on another league why TF are they crying they have no money to expand the rosters, raise the salary cap significantly and always saying they are losing money every year? If you are losing money every year you wouldn't go out and try to make a new league where you will spend even more money and compete vs NWSL and USL too.
The profile of the writer: "Writer for Scarves and Spikes and Beyond the 90! High schooler, goalkeeper, and strong Christian!" The fact that so many people have run with this is insane (but not surprising). Sure, a HS kid may have sources. But there should have been some questions as to whether or not a HS kid managed to scoop the entire soccer journalism industry (men's and women's) to something that would be so profoundly big and controversial. In other words: I spoke to MLS Commish Don Garber last year about MLS’ potential intention to start a women’s league. Back then, he didn’t know what that would look like & according to my sources, the league still has no solid plans to involve itself in the women’s game. It’s bad info, folks. pic.twitter.com/aGY15t0J9x— Pablo Iglesias Maurer (@MLSist) August 12, 2024
It's honestly a weird "pattern" that's suddenly popped up. A month or two ago was the rumor that MLS was going to buy NWSL and/or WPSL, reported by a guy who normally covers lower-division men's soccer - which didn't apply to any of the three leagues in question. Now this HS kid comes up with a "scoop" that seems to dovetail off the first guy's story incredibly well... "MLS tried to buy NWSL but was rebuffed, so they're starting their own league - and they're not buying WPSL but they are talking about forming a partnership moving forward". Weird. Just weird. Also, has the blog's Tweet been deleted by now? lol
They retracted the story Scarves and Spikes prides itself on being a reliable source of coverage for news about Atlanta United and MLS as a whole. That said, we don’t want to be afraid to admit when we’ve missed the mark, and this is one of those times.— ⚽️Scarves and Spikes | SUBSCRIBE ON YOUTUBE! Asked around and I haven’t been able to corroborate any of this report. League sources tell me there haven’t been discussions about competing with the #NWSLCleveland Pro Soccer has explicitly debunked the Crew ties, I can also confirm STL isn’t aware of any conversations. https://t.co/Edo6ziJguO— Justin Horneker (@hornekerjustin) August 12, 2024
So, if MLS comes up with a women's league, that will make 4 professional circuits in 24 years. Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), 2001–2003 Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), 2009–2011 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), 2013–present It would be nice to see but I honestly don't think Garber, the owners & Co are that interested.
Actually it would be FIVE. The USL Super League starts this month. IMO, this is not happening. There's a better chance of MLS and NWSL partnering or merging. There's an outside chance of MLS adding girls leagues to MLS NeXT, and then a third division women's NeXT Pro League. IMO, that's a very sl;im chance.
I agree. I foresee MLS investing in a second division and even a third and/or some kind of merger with some USL clubs before they starting thinking of a women's league.
