Here's a thought people: Why not make an MLS centered Soccer Tonight weekly show on ESPN, or Fox Soccer Channel? I know it has been discussed before, but don't you think it is about time it happened??? Here's my thought for the 2008 season. Bring this show to ESPN for the hour immedietly following the MLS Primetime game. Call it MLS Tonight, or Soccer Tonight, and cover soccer. They own rights to so many Euro Games that it could easily work in the MLS offseason as well. In 2008 you could have Eric Wynalda, Allen Hopkins, and Drew Carey host the show. Drew won't be too biased until 2009, and even then is such an entertaining, and huge figure for the sport, that nobody will care. This needs to happen. What do you think people? Can this work? Would you sign a petition to go to ESPN with it? Thoughts...........................................................................
that would be awesome... i sent an email to espn last year about somthin like this but never got a response...o well...my idea was: Thursday: Their regular primetime game Friday: Nothing (no need for show to be here bc not all games are complete and NBA is on fridays beginning and end of mls) Saturday: 4-5 games on FSC, HDNET, and local sports networks... Sunday: 1-2 games on Telefutura and local sports networks Monday: Nothing (not good bc monday night football) Tuesday: A 30 minute or hopefully 1 hour show on ESPN 1 or 2 that recaps all the games of the past round...and previews games coming up next week...This is perfect as it is right in between "nothing" days and fills the void...(Poker will be on other ESPN channel if its that important to you all..) Wednesday: Nothing (dumb...right before gameday...i want some evened out coverage throughout the week... also NBA night) .... also, all their special graphics showing the balls motion and stuff, and all that (ok, some) pointless info about players could be saved for this show to clear up some time for the actual game... what do you guys think??
A fantastic and very necessary idea. But for a show like that to happen on ESPN, the ratings would have to be better than taped shows like poker. Right now the MLS games on Thursdays get around 200 thousand viewers. The taped poker shows get twice that. Until ratings go up, an MLS show won't happen. But it is a chicken and/or the egg situation...How do you get people to watch MLS when there's virtually no non-Beckham news in the mainstream. It's inexplicable that Fox or GOLtv doesn't do one.
I agree with you on this. Soccer Tonight? What do you think? I think during the MLS season, it should be most focused on MLS, but I think you are right. It's like there are so many games on ESPN, you think they could promote a show to stir the pot on issues. They do it for everything else. But the guy that said, this is a chicken and egg issue is 100% right. MLS would get more viewers with an MLS weekly show. An MLS weekly show would benefit from a good numbers on the Primetime MLS Thursdays. I don't know. Will this ever happen? So many of us want it so bad...(obviously I speak for Soccer Die Hards, not common America, but the divide is shrinking) Oh well...
I'd also like to point out the fact that Drew Carey wore a Barcelona hat and scarf to a US Soccer/MLS benefit. Words cannot describe how that angers me.
Actually, they should limit it mainly to MLS (with maybe a bit of non-MLS soccer news thrown in, but just a bit at the very most). There's already plenty of coverage for soccer in general with MLS getting only a tiny fraction of that (particularly on FSC's Fox Soccer Report). MLS needs a show of its very own, very much like ESPN's previous MLS ExtraTime or FSC's MLS Wrap. Monday evenings are the best day to air such a weekly show, since Mondays are close enough for the weekend's action to be fresh in everyone's minds, but still gives the show enough time to put on a more polished package of highlights, analysis and background info than if it was aired right after a game. -G
Well thanks jerkface. (Yeah, I said jerkface.) I know it's a topic on all of our minds, so I asked a question or two about it, and wanted to find out what things people would like to see on it/. So, either get involved, discuss, or answer, or move the (blank) on.
I would actually have a reason to watch espn if this happened. It should definently be mostly about MLS during the season, then have other news depending on wether its 30min or an hour. Then in the offseason it should be about MLS transfers and cover more of the foriegn leagues.
The guy pimps MLS all the time. Hell, he's part-owner of the Seattle team. Maybe since the event was for all of US Soccer and MLS he didn't want to be partisan, so he rocked some Euro gear instead?
its definitely a great idea and would love to see it.. i dont think its too far from happening though.. a 30 minute segment during the day/at nite.. something would be nice maybe even show it on sportscenter as highlights? that would be nice.. i know i've seen MLS and european plays on Top10, but its very rare.. i'd rather see highlights though.. would be pretty badass as for 30 min show..
Respectfully disagree with your opinion, Goodsport. I think if you do not do "full" coverage, which includes the biggest leagues/clubs in the world, you risk the legitimacy of your offering. Having an American-style football show or baseball show, without NFL or MLB highlights, would not be very good for harboring interest in/for, nor help in growing, those sports in general. Same goes for soccer.
And I respectfully disagree with your disagreement, FFCinPCB. There'd be only so much time in a weekly one-hour show to cover one league in detail or a lot of leagues briefly. NFL Primetime is an example of the former while Fox Soccer Report is an example of the latter. There are already shows across cable that both cover the world of soccer in general like the aforementioned Fox Soccer Report to GolTV's American Soccer, to the other various such shows that cover specific soccer leagues, in English and in other languages. What MLS needs is a show that's specifically about MLS, much like the other major sports leagues in this country have (like the aforementioned NFL Primetime). If anything, MLS having its own show is what will add legitimacy to its place in the sporting broadcast landscape. Besides, now that ESPN is paying MLS a rights fee, it wouldn't make sense for it to not promote MLS as much as possible. That actually kind of contradicts your point. NFL Primetime is primarily about the NFL, MLB's show is primarily about MLB, and MLS' show should be mainly about MLS. -G
Yeah, I agree with you Goodsport. MLS needs its own show. I can(and do) watch Fox Soccer Report, but we need an MLS weekly show. Obviously they have all that hoopla, like David Beckham's America, or whatever, but none of it stays current, like all the ESPN shows do. That's what MLS needs.
Not if you are thinking outside the confines of the United States border. Let us not be myopic about how we approach the Beautiful (Global) Game. Re-read what I wrote in that context, and it will make more sense. To ignore the history, the tradition, and the fanfare that has existed for so long with each storied club over the world would be detrimental to any broadcast that claims to be interested on promoting soccer at nearly any level. Perhaps those who manage and coach the soccer youth in the United States would be well-served to understand that also. I would argue that following and supporting clubs outside the United States, along with U.S. clubs or perhaps instead of U.S. clubs, presents the opportunity for kids to understand the game in a much more fulfilling, well-rounded, and perhaps most importantly, PASSIONATE fashion. 130 years or more of the original football should not be ignored in the name of expediency, nor protectionism or nationalism.
Then ESPN should have two separate weekly hour-long shows, one that covers MLS (like I've suggested) and one that covers soccer in general (like you've suggested). That way, MLS will have its own hour-long (which would be barely enough time to cover all of the league's game highlights, studio analysis, interviews and features) weekly show that it sorely needs, and general soccer fans will have their own hour-long weekly show that covers soccer in general (of which MLS highlights would probably occupy no more than five minutes). -G
I hate how ESPN try to put highlights in Sportscenter, they're 30 seconds. If they own the rights to the Thursday night games, they need to have more footage. I don't think they even know how to show soccer highlights. They think a missed shot is just that, but it could still be a highlight if it's a good setup. Soccernet on ESPN soccernet is ok, but not long enough.
Respectfully though just like BB Tonight and other sport specific shows The MLS should put one out that is MLS specific like a fans united show or EPL fanzone OR a ROUNDTABLE show with a tactical breakdown segment and player profiles, citys were the game is played profile segment, a US historical perspective segment, various shows can be done on ESPN ( maybe they need an ESPN 3 ), FSC, call it (The MLS SHOW ), GOLTV ( they have AMERICAN SOCCER ) its decent, or any other channel that can air nationally. Dont stop there search for someone to do a nationall radio talk show (not on a pay for radio system) its needed! In american opression of the beautiful game is in full effect its like a taboo or something to talk about soccer on the radio or on tv its rediculous and I bet its a few controlling the many! we need an entrepaneur to step up and stop tiptoeing about the sport on radio or television for the english speaking in the U.S . because spanish has it locked and I for one am down with all of their programming but even they dont cover the MLS as it should be not dissing them they give the mexican first division priority ( CA fan ) as they should its huge here in the states also the Libertadores tournament ( South America ) and anything and everything Latin American, I do follow, im also a big fan of the MLS and tradition in my home includes this league ( LAG fan - pre-post becks ) I keep up with everything US soccer as much as I can (MNT 1st) I for one support the sport as much as I can : memo to CEOs: Do something.
The MLS specific show allready presupposes history and tradition of the game its not a new game those that would watch it would know this its not ignoring the world simply promoting this league, shows like LA LIGA or HALLO BUNDESLIGA! ETC. they are a plenty so a " Americas Major League Soccer Show" makes perfect sense.
This thread has gone well. I agree that all the leagues are important, but I feel that there is ample coverage through FSC of leagues around the world. The problem is the lack of MLS coverage on a strong American network. Maybe this MLS show could be done on ESPN 2, or another network. Maybe TBS, or TNT, even one of the major networks like Fox, CBS, NBC, or ABC could do this. If you noticed, CBS just announced MMA is coming to Primetime. I think, if they took a similar approach to MLS it would be successful as well. It just has to approached by a network with the understanding, it will grow. Every network acts as though MLS is wildly unpopular, when in fact, it is clearly growing. Someone, Buy in to the League Now, while it is cheap. Look at all these new owners, they are successful businessmen. What do they know that you don't??? Catch this train people. Don't be a slowski....
