We have all heard whispers that there is a possible major loan deal for a MLS star to a Premiership side after the US season is over. It got me to thinking who the most likely candidates for a trip abroad are and where they might be headed. I'd like to hear some opinions (conjecture) on which Premiership clubs might be in the market for some American talent and, most importantly, why??? Let's take into consideration current credible transfer information as well as scenarios in which rosters remain relatively unchanged through the summer. My vote? Landon to Newcastle or Arsenal.
That would be Landon to Arsenal to Reserves. Maybe he can get a game with a team a little further down the ladder. Spurs? Blackburn (if they lose Duff)?
Re: Re: MLS to Premiership loan deals Seriously. He'd actually have an easier time cracking the lineup at Arsenal (Kanu is headed out and perhaps Bergkamp as well) than Newcastle, where Landon would have to compete with Shearer, Bellammy, Ameobi, Chopra and Lua Lua.
Let's start out with the easy stuff. Most likely not Landon as the loan would have to go through BL I would imagine as they have his contract. Now on to the more difficult options..... 1. Howard - GK - rumored interest. A loan spell for Howard would be ideal for a GK as he would return when MLS is back in season, reap the benefit of training with an EPL team, and the team would get the exposure of seeing first hand what the kid is capable of, if they have an interest, and they could get a backup or third keeper for relatively low costs. If you want a complete list of possible players ready for the next stage, you might consider checking out espn.com's article by Marc Connely which lists ten up and comers for the US/MLS. It is a good read. Players who have been mentioned in the past who have been "linked" or on trial with Premiership clubs..... Demarcus Beasley - Boro rumors I believe Pablo Mastroini(SP?) - Bolton rumors Josh Wolff - Blackburn trial Santino Quaranta & Ed Johnson - ManU rumors if I recall correctly These are the only names that I clearly remember that were in MLS and have been linked in the past with Premiership clubs.
I don't know about Howard. It would be really strange for a team to loan in a keeper like that. I mean, I know players get loaned down, like happened with Hahneman. But does anyone know of a GK being loaned up?
I think someone to Bolton is the best guess. Allardyce is very creative in his use of loans. I don't know their team well enough to know where they might have a hole next year.
Actually, yes. Hahnemann's replacement at Colorado, Ian Feuer (remember him? Marcus led Colorado to a 12-4 record over the first half of the season, and Feuer went 4-12 over the second half) played for Derby County on their way down and out of the Premiership, though if memory serves he did fairly well. I remember the Yanks Abroad board lamenting the injustice of Feuer doing well in the Premiership while Marcus was laboring away in the First Division.
Re: Re: MLS to Premiership loan deals Donovan could easily out play Parlour in the midfied at Arsenal.
Re: Re: Re: MLS to Premiership loan deals Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they two completely different types of players?
He didn't mean Parlour. He meant Taylor. Landon Donovan could easily outplay Stuart Taylor in the midfield at Arsenal.
Assuming we stay up. We'll have a big hole in central defence where Gundi Bergsson was (He's retiring)
Re: Re: Re: MLS to Premiership loan deals LD would likely be in a midfield role with the Toon but the club already has plenty of attacking middies in Jenas, Dyer, Viana, Nobby and the new lad from Ipswich. What Newcastle needs is a midfielder in the holding role to eventually replace Gary Speed.
Re: Re: Re: MLS to Premiership loan deals Not so fast my friend. Speed plays a holding role while Jenas I think is equal to LD.
Who would he replace in defence? Campbell, O'Brien, Cole etc. He'd get into neither team anywhere on the pitch.
They said "Oh Landon, yeah. Christ - forgot about him! Used to play at ... erm ... at Leverkusen? Wow. Really? Oh - I see. Not "play". But he was there, eh? Do they still own him? Well well well. How's he doing? Still playing? Excellent! What? Oh, no - you're OK, no rush. He's probably better off back at home."
Ian Feuer was at Tranmere a while back. Still might be there. Dunno, haven't been over to Prenno for a while.
