Normally yes, but I think he will be available immediately for a team. Did you read differently?

We don't want any kids with speed, it would mess up our style of play, not to mention team chemistry. Do you know of any old injury prone EPL washouts that might be available? A defender would be nice.

Dallas and NE are heavy favorites, but the Metrostars will end up with Danny. Now the real question is who will Dallas/NE get for Danny?

He'll be available right away through a weighted lottery (next week) according to Bergin.

"The lottery to determine Szetela's new club will be a weighted one, likely to be in favour of worst records presently in MLS. If that is the case, the Dallas Burn and the New England Revolution would have the greatest chance of winning Szetela's rights. Both of those clubs have a deep midfield, and they (or any other team) could use Szetela as trade bait for the MetroStars in order to reinforce other parts of their side."

So..if we get him, who on the MetroStars would we need and be likely to trade Szetela for...or do we keep him?

Given that our biggest need is in defense right now...the Metros defenders include Arena, Bonseu (SI), Brenes, Leitch, Parke, Pope, Stammler and Ziadie. Nicol would not bring in a rookie defender, I think so Arena, Brenes, Parke and Stammler are out. I don't have a real sense of Leitch. He would probably be the easiest to get, but I'm not sure if he would help us much. Ziadie is a right sided player and might be worth a swap. Bonseu gets complicated. If we could get him, we would have to drop and SI (did someone say Kante, again?) to make room. I don't think we could wrench Pope out of there with 2 Szetela's. So those would be our choices:

    1. Keep Szetela
    2. Trade him for Ziadie (or Leitch)
    3. Trade him for Bonseu and waive Kante
    4. Pass on Szetela all together and just forget about it.

    Any thoughts?

I don't think we need a defender so badly. NJ is loaded with forwards - I'm sure they could part with one, but forget Galvan Ray.

My first choice would be to keep him if there's any way possible. A 1st round draft choice would be appropriate, IF it were guaranteed to be in the top half. Maybe a deal like we did with Chicago, but in reverse (a first rounder if in the top 5, else a 2nd round this year and 1st rounder next year).

I wonder what the salary cap implications are? Is he P-40, and thereby exempt from the cap? If so, I want him even more.

The stakes in this lottery are pretty big. Can we hope to get lucky (for once)???

The Mutts have the worst defense in the league. I don't know a single defender except Pope whose worth giving up rights to such a bright young prospect. Frankly, I'd keep him.

Does anyone know if the Mutts have a first round draft pick left in the 2005 Super Draft? I'm not sure going for a first round pick would make sense anyway because this draft will be weighted to the expansion teams and this kid is a known verses the 'might become's in the draft.

I'd keep him---any anyway, why should he go to the Mutts? SN has shown he's as good as anyone in developing young players.

    Agreed--were due.

The way the Soccer Gods have been crapping on the Foxboro faithful since preseason you have to hope that the Gods do one of their patented turnarounds and send us a bit of Joy :D

    If we win---KEEP HIM

Nothing short of Ricardo Clark would make me give up Szetela.

And even then, I'm not sure if that would be enough, simply because we've got a boatload of central midfielders.

Sorry guys, but if you read closely, the reason Szetella decided to sign with MLS instead of makin more money overseas was because he was promised that he would be able to stay at home in Jersey and play for the Metrostars. His dad died less than 2 years ago, and he really wants to stay home with his family. Most likely, the winner of the lottery will be forced to trade him to the Metrostars, so even if you guys do win, keeping him is out of the question.

Draft picks don't have to be top half to be valuable. Don't forget - Noonan was the #9 pick, and Dempsey #8. Dempsey has to be far and away the ROTY candidate, and Noonan finished second in the balloting.

That's OK.......we'll take Gaven. MLS rules only allow one mama's boy hometown kiddie per team......don't they?

The only players on the Metros I'd trade him for (I'm not including Pope, because that's not going to happen) would be Gaven, Clark, or possibly Vaca and a pick like what we got from Chicago last year (bottom half of 1st round or top half of 2nd round). Draft picks will be of value next year due to the expansion draft and all of our soon to be SIs, all of whom we couldn't keep.

You guys arent understanding this. Szetela said that he plays for the Metros or he wont play at all. This means that it will be a forced trade, and the team who gets Szetella will get less value in return. BTW, why would you want Vaca? He had some good years before, but is having a terrible year.

Dude, we get it. The point is that the Metros should be forced to give up equal value in order to get Szetela. To me, that's at least Ricardo Clark.

If Szetela will play for Metro or nobody else, much like Freddy Adu was going to play for D.C. United or nobody else, the Metro's going to have to pay out the nose to get him.

If the Revs happen to get him in the lottery, there are only two options I'd consider, and that's not at all to suggest they're what Bradley and Metro would consider:

Szetela for Gaven straight up. It'll be a cold day in Hell when that happens, but Gaven would be a perfect fit for Kamler's wide midfield slot, and for a team with serious cap problems, he'd come cheap as a P-40.

More likely scenario, we get Metro's first-round pick or a bundle of picks, and cap relief.

But hey, what are the odds we'll even get him.

Mike, Rico is an established player who proved that he was able to make the jump. Szetela is a very promising teenager who has never played outside of his youth age group. Szetela could be the greatest thing since sliced bread. He could also flop miserably. Santino Quaranta was a "sure thing" coming into the league too. Eddie Johnson was getting love letters from Juventus. Neither one of them has turned into anything resembling the value of Rico Clark. You don't trade a proven blue chip for a good prospect.

Would it kill MLS to have a little more integrity on these things? Why go through the sham of "weighted lottery" if the player in question will in no way be playing for that team?

Here's a thought. Announce the signing and the team to whom he is being allocated. Then arrange for the other teams to negotiate with the team getting the allocation for the player(s)/pick(s) they want if they win the lottery...with MLS serving as arbitrator. Then hold the lottery and play out the hand.

That has to be something like what happens anyway, so why not just write it in jello ;)and be done with it?
