But MLS isn't making profits, at least that is what it is always said by the owners themselves. MLS itself isn't profitable. The profits come from SUM and the investors of MLS take a piece of that pie. If everything is to be believed then CPL 2025 > MLS 2001. At this rate CPL will be much more profitable in 30 years of existence than MLS at 30 years that is still depending on SUM to make them money. Which brings me to another point. What happens when the Mexican National Team decides to cut the middle man (SUM) and they create their own company to negotiate games here in the US? There were talks of FMF not renewing with SUM but at the end they did. So the idea of FMF leaving SUM at some point is already there. In reality FMF doesn't need SUM, SUM needs FMF. What will happen at that point to MLS if SUM loses its money maker? CPL needs to build its own SSS (MLS took years and is still working on it), build training facilities and get into real estate like MLS. Their valuations would sky rocket just like it did MLS. They need to play the long shot like MLS of "in the future your team will be worth xxx and you can sell then". They are already ahead of MLS if we compare it to how MLS was in its first 5 years. I'm surprised many more investors aren't jumping at the opportunity to join now while CPL is still cheap.
That's already been covered. It's not a lack of interested investors that is holding CPL expansion back. It's the fact that there aren't any suitable stadiums/stadium situations to play in currently for new teams. It's extremely difficult to get new stadiums built in Canada, likewise training facilities as well.
Thankfully someone else said it... Where would they play? If FMS cuts out SUM, do the SUM members continue to let the Mexican NTs play at their stadiums? USSF is slightly less joined at the hip to MLS, does USSF allow the cross brder games to keep happening? Do we think the Big Swinging Vic is going to let his golden calf start losing money, or will CONCACAF lean on FMF like they did on USSF around the "MLS Doesn't have to play in the open cup if it doesn't want to" debacle due to the perceived threat to SUM?
MLS/SUM don't control all the stadiums here in the US. Mexican NT recently played in a college stadium here in Texas. I would think other NFL owners wouldn't mind making business with FMF to have Mexico play in their stadium. Jerry Jones wouldn't mind at all. USSF and SUM aren't working together anymore. FMF can definitely play friendly games here as they have. And they can do it without the need of SUM to do all the work and collect a percentage of it. Will it happen? I'm sure it's coming. As I said, it was rumored that FMF wasn't planning on renewing with SUM/MLS. FMF has the product and SUM isn't needed for them to sell their product. It sells by itself. It will be interesting if or when that happens what MLS does and how big of a hit its finances take because according to the owners themselves MLS by itself isn't profitable. If investors are willing to pay $500M for an MLS franchise to own a part of SUM then it's going to be awfully odd if SUM loses Mexico NT.
I don't think it will happen, but, from your keyboard to God's screen here's hoping. Endless gold cups, nations leagues, other new concacaf level events since SUM is also their marketing partner would be my guess at how they'd try to replace the revenue.
